place where Scottish monarchs once lived. Admire the well-preserved chambers and enjoy panoramic views from the windows. This part of the palace has now been re-done with a series of rooms showcasing royal portraits and artifacts. As you enter the first room with portraits, take note of a doorway in the top right-hand corner.
This is the very room where Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to King James VI of Scotland (AKA King James I of England)! James VI had a remarkable life. Crowned king of Scotland at just 13 months old, he became the first monarch of both Scotland and England in 1603. His birth chamber is a highlight for many castle visitors today.
As you move through the palace, another highlight is the beautifully restored Laich Hall, still used today for fancy state occasions.
Crown jewels are kept here (like Kohinoor in Tower of London), though not much security like it's sister tower, but its equally beautiful. The Sceptre, Crown of Scotland, and Sword of state are the highlight of this collection. read more
