Do you like pub food? Do you like Michelin stars? Do you want an amazing meal with little to no…read morepretension? Do you want to go to a pub that's practically in the middle of nowhere? If you answered yes to these four questions, head immediately to The Royal Oak. We had a slight concern when my GPS said we had arrived and it was a completely different pub. Luckily, the right pub was just a bit further up the road. We booked Sunday Lunch, because who doesn't like Sunday Lunch in a pub? If you bring your Ferrari, you can park right in the front as well! The inside is really warm and charming. There are really friendly staff there to welcome you in and let you sit in some comfy chairs and couches and have a drink while you're waiting for your fourth dining companion to arrive. So kudos to that. Our table was in the back in what looked like was an add-on. But one whole wall is full of windows overlooking a beautiful garden, so you don't really feel like you're shoved way in the back corner. The service was a bit slow, but if you're not in a rush, why does it matter? We ordered the baked Vacherin Mont d'or cheese (which in the winter, I will be doing at home instead of baked brie or Camembert) and a couple of Scotch Eggs and Rabbit on toast as pre-nibbles. The eggs and rabbit were nice, but not amazing, but the cheese dip was great. And the bread basket they served was awesome as well. Several types of bread with butter. The olive flatbreads were awesome, and since two diners didn't like olives, two of us got to eat a lot of them. They'll bring as much bread as you ask, but it's super easy to go overboard. For my starter I opted for something different than everyone else and got the game terrine. What a mistake that was. Not that the terrine wasn't delicious. It was, but the rabbit lasagne was like heaven in your mouth. I was super jealous of everyone else. For my main I ordered the hare and trotter pie. The crust wasn't the most amazing, but the filling was probably the best pie filling I've ever had. The hare and trotter were soft and luscious and the gravy was phenomenal. It was really rich so toward the end I had to cut the richness with the delicious mash they served with it. The other half had the woodcock and I tried a few bites of that as well. Awesome. Simply awesome. His only complaint was that it was huge and very rich so it was hard to finish it all, and he didn't want dessert at the end of the meal. For dessert, two of us ordered the chocolate fondant and one the butterscotch pudding. I loved the fondant, but again it was really good sized and incredibly rich. It was a lot after the rich pie. And the filling was almost too oozy. At least it wasn't over done. We also ordered some Madeleines and our coffees and teas came with Petits Fours. The Madeleines were kind of boring for me, they needed more flavor, but the Petits Fours (a raisin cake, coconut marshmallow and a chocolate truffle) were great. The coffee not so much. I hate ordering filter coffee and just getting a long pull espresso. They are not the same. But the bad parts were really minor. The good parts far outshown and some of the dishes we had were some of the best dishes of the weekend. The woodcock was fantastic and I'm still having dreams about my pie. I need to figure out how to make something that good at home. With a better pie crust. It's unfortunate that it's not really conveniently close, because I could see myself ending up here quite a bit. Since I was driving, I couldn't drink either, but given my state the night before, it was probably a good thing. If you're in the area and fancy an amazingly laid back atmosphere with awesome food, book this place!

Wonderful gastro pub tucked away in the Berkshire countryside. Go for a long morning walk along the Tames nearby and then go and enjoy a warm & hearty Sunday lunch.

Although it isn't really that local, this is the pub I consider to be my local. It's too far to…read morewalk but it provides a good excuse to get the push bike out and the ride home always seems shorter than the ride there! Very nice traditional freehold pub with a range of real ales and ciders. Mick and Wendy are very friendly hosts, recently took over as landlord and landlady and seem to have good ideas for the place. I would recommend it to others and look forward to seeing how they progress. A point to note is they have extended their opening hours beyond those kept by the previous keepers, the cider prevents me from remembering exact details but they are open every day and all day long Friday to Sunday I think! In essence this is a pub like pubs should be. The closing time is open to negotiation, you may be kept waiting at the bar while the landlord finishes his game of darts, there will probably be a dog or two wandering around the bar area - yours will be welcome too, if it is cold there will be a fire lit and if you come more than once then people will make the effort to remember your name. It's a welcome change from a Greene King, Weatherspoons et al.

I have only had lunch here at ate outside, the food was alright, had burger and chips and it was well cooked. There is a nice outside seating area with some swings. Great to go here if you dont want to bump into anyone and just have a quiet drink away from it all. You get some office staff here for lunch and a few regulars but it never has been busy when I have visited.

This must have been a biker's bar at some point, but a regular neighbourhood pub at the time I was…read morethere. That's been a while. These water holes have got to be 500 year old, so they have character. The ale was good, but by UK standards it was brewed to be served cooler than normal--Greene King IPA , Summer Ale or something like that was OK too.

This pub has recently re-opened (November 09?) and the decor is very swish. Feature walls with…read moreluxurious wallpaper, and high-backed leather chairs. But the staff are friendly and casual, yet still attentive. Not at all pompous. I felt I was in a small, but immaculate and modern-decorated pub, paired with a friendly atmosphere. Seemed so clean, you could almost eat off the floor. Everything virtually new. The mid-week lunch menu had a limited but nice selection, though the waitress also rattled off quite a number of specials. I chose a simple burger and asked for cheddar to be substituted for stilton (the advice of my wife who's dragged me there after going with friends). It was under six pounds. It was presented well, open with relish and some salad, and next to a Jenga-type arrangment of hot very-chunky chips. I have to say, it was the best burger I've had in as long as I can remember. Superb chips too. They also served light pastas, and baguette sandwiches. I saw one going past and that looked splendid. They brought a highchair for a friend's baby, and cooed at him fondly. The seating area is semi-split by the old nooky nature of the space, so with it not being busy, we felt we had an area to ourselves. There were other diners in that seemed very happy too. So, good parking for cars. Lovely staff. Brilliant little meal. Decor that's almost too good. I'll be going back again soon, and in less of a hurry, so I can try more food and a dessert too. Can't honestly think of a bad thing to say about this place. Not from my one visit so far, anyway. Just to add, in summer 2010, that I've been back. Everything is just as magnificent, but the food prices have increased now. Most dishes are around £9-£10. And desserts seem especially dear at £6-plus. Some lovely choices though, and I enjoyed a bacon, asparagus and pea risotto. It was £10, but before you baulk at that, remember that a risotto can be £10 at Prezzo. By comparison, this one was in a much, much higher class of taste, ingredients and presentation. My wife had a Windsor-reared burger. It was almost two inches thick, and looked great. Okay, it was £9....but came with fabulous chunky chips and you often pay a tenner for quality burger meals these days at good eating places, or even at GBK Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Nope, I have to admit, the prices were too good to be true when first opened, and now they're more normal. But as the food, staff, decor, parking are all of the best standard, I keep my score at five out of five.
