Charminar Indian Cuisine - The sweet Vegetarian kulcha naan

Charminar on The Parade is the place my boyfriend takes me to when my mum forgets my birthday, or…read moremy cat does a big wee on the couch. The cheese naan and butter chicken are like a delicious embrace and make me feel whole and well functioning again. I love the soft lighting and honey tones in the décor, and the elephant on the front counter and the wine list that seems to be specifically designed for us. What I do not love is having to leave the restaurant and totter up the long alleyway out the back to use the toilets. Apparantly the men's toilets are quite hazardous, my boyfriend was trapped in there for several minutes when the lock got stuck. I'm willing to overlook the toilet factor because I love the heck out of Charminar on the Parade, I really do. We all have our little regular spots that feel like home and this is mine. Last time we had to move tables because the air conditioner was blasting us and they couldn't switch it off. Also the naan last time was a bit dry and our waitress seemed somewhat distracted. But I'll forgive this one time because everyone has bad days. I'm a monogamist and our relationship will last forever. But sort out the air con please.

First of all, the restaurant is extremely trendy (chandeliers anyone?) it has a great atmosphere and the lighting is just right. We sat outside in the balcony seating because it was a warm night, I highly recommend this if you're on a date because it's slightly more private than inside. Service was a little slow but the food is worth the wait, Lamb Rogan Josh is my happiest Indian meal and the lamb is cooked to perfection, it melts in your mouth. Amazing. It's also quite reasonably priced which is always a winner for me! I know there are a few of these around but I'm going to be biased and say this is the best restaurant in the best neighbourhood. It is imperitive that you make a booking later in the week because its very popular, Charminar also offers take away if you feel like being anti social!

Our group had a collection of tastes to cater to and they delivered. Vegan, vegetarian and omnivores alike all left completely satiated. We had mixed entree to start with, which was comprised of their chicken tikka from the tandoori, the best samosas the group had ever tried and pakoras with paneer and mixed veg in their cumin spiked batter. Main comprised of naans, rice, a vegan eggplant dish which was the tables favourite, vegan dhal, saag paneer, butter chicken, a South Indian prawn curry and tender goat curry served on the bone. Everything was perfectly spiced and the heat of all dishes, meant that everyone enjoyed their meal and no one struggled through a wall of chilli. We finished our meal with the Gulab Jaman which was just the right size after such a large meal. The prices on the menu are all very reasonable and they BYO too. Be sure to crack open a Kingfisher Beer and have the best Indian Food outside of India.

Delivery is available, which is great. I am presuming (being new to Adelaide myself) that they haven't been there long as they weren't listed in Yelp. Decor is comfortable and tables are far apart enough to make it a pleasant place to chat.

Jasmin is Adelaide's quiet achiever in Indian cuisine. Family operated for 32 years, they have won…read moredozens of awards for their food. You realise why when you try it. The main dining room is in a basement off Hindmarsh Square. The surrounds are elegant, avoiding any kistch Indian decorations in favour of large artworks of local artists. It is not uncommon for Jasmin to be booked out on Saturday and Sunday, so it's safest to book for your number. While it is on the pricey side, it appeals to diners who love good quality food and wine. The wine list has over 200 options, as well as a good range of beers, spirits, aperitifs and dessert wines. The banquet is a great option, and I recommend it to friends. It consists of five or more entrees, and another five or so main meals. It means you get to try a range of dishes, when it's hard to choose just one. The prawn sambal is always a stand out, but (and I sound like a typical Westerner here) my favourite is the butter chicken. But no, really, it's amazing! They spice it differently, so while it's not hot, it's full of flavour, and the pieces of chicken are enormous and juicy. Every time we go there, there has to be some butter chicken on our table. If undertaking the banquet, when the small bowls of curry come out, you think you've been jipped. Try getting through just one, and you're filling up. Then add the several types of naan (the best are the blue cheese naan and the standard cheese naan) and papadums with chutney and raita, and it's rare to see anyone get through the entire banquet. You groan when the dessert menus come around, though it's worth ordering a coffee or tea, just for the delicious hazelnut/chocolate slice that come with it - one for every table member! I was disappointed that their chai is not authentic, but it's still a nice blend of tea, and a great way to finish an enormous and very tasty meal.

My buddy got the chicken tindaloo and it was one of the spiciest dishes either of us have ever tasted. The naan was also quite good and they have kingfisher beer.
