The Westgate museum, is set in a old lockup prison, for the drunken and disorderly, and as a debtors' gaol. During the 16th to 18th centuries. Much of the graffiti carved in the softer stone in the upper chamber of the gate, derives from this use. Staff The staff are very helpful and understandable know what each objects is but I would like to name 1 helpful volunteer Ian. service The service is quick and no tickets are required you can also find lots of gifts in the museum gift shop. Where are all these ancient objects found??? All these ancient objects are all found in the Winchester grounds. There is a stunning collection of armor and a giblet, unique collection of weights and measures. And also king Charles ll boot may be seen!! I would recommend you to visit this museum as I think it is interesting and is suitable for children this includes things such as a roof deck and clothing to try on and armor I enjoyed my visit and I hope you will too. It houses all those things you expect to find in a city museum and extraordinarily an entire old fashioned tobacconist that was moved there lock, stock & barrel after the owner died & bequeathed it to the city! I mean, my one and only son is named Galahad, so I may be a bit biased, but...this is our mythology (white Anglo-Saxons, anyway). It should be treasured. There's more to the Great Hall that just the...hall itself, but you'll find yourself here most of the time. The gift shop, too. They sold me a fantastic mini-flail souvenir, which was summarily confiscated upon my second flight out of Heathrow (not my first, ironically), and I still miss it. But one thing I do not miss of the Great Hall at Winchester are the memories, because they are still with me. They're something the British version of the TSA could never take from me.

The day of our visit, there were a few schools visiting but everyone we encountered from the staff to the young preschool students were friendly and considerate. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Oxford.

A museum of natural history would generally be on my list of "museums I don't wish to visit" but…read morethe Oxford Museum of Natural History proved that I barely know myself. First, it's free of charge which automatically makes it attractive. But though free may get me in the door it won't guarantee I'll enjoy it. This museum isn't just free but it is also gorgeous and interesting, a real home run. And, in the event that Natural History isn't your jam even here, this place contains the portal to the almost indescribable Pitt Rivers Museum (also free). One of these is bound to be your happy place.

And don't get me started on the drawers; they're everywhere too, and when you pull them out you'll find hundreds more items in each. So if you like your museums with a few paintings on each wall this might not be your jam but you'll still probably be happy you went. You've likely never seen anything like this. A young woman in a shop mentioned, several days before my visit, that she particularly liked this museum and the way she described the entrance intrigued me. As it should: the entrance to this museum is found when you're already inside another museum (The Museum of Natural History; both are free of charge). Officially, the Pitt Rivers Museum displays both the archeological and anthropological collections of the University of Oxford. But unofficially, it's like entering someone's giant garage, very well organized but also packed to the rafters. One could spend months in here and only skim the surface.

A very interesting assortment of fighters and bombers including Prototype #2 of the English Electric Lightning, the first Mach 2 fighter in the world. Visitors are permitted to sit in cockpits of many of the a planes. The museum store sells Airfix model kits (remember those?!). I also noticed a shop near Salisbury Train Station that sold such model kits.

Not your typical aircraft museum! I visited with a two other guys who were 30+ and it was a great…read morevisit. Really interesting volunteers all eager to talk about anything related to the aircraft , they ranged from a retired Vulcan pilot, retired ground crew to anoraks helping restore some of the planes! Virtually everything could be touched, played with, sat in so I think this would be a great place to take kids - although you'd need to keep a close eye on them as it is a little tricky scaling ladders and getting into some of the cockpits. I really puts a different view on many of the aircraft. We also got to have a go in the Link trainer at the end of the visit which was a good fun and I assume gives you some idea of what it is like to fly (I'm not a pilot). If you are an enthusiast of have kids I'd say it was a great way to spend a couple of hours if you are passing by!
