I stopped at this farm market recently and was absolutely so excited about this find. I'm glad that…read moreI didn't see any of the negative reviews prior to my visit, because I can now honestly say they are all wrong. To the people complaining about the prices; this is a small business that doesn't have corporate sponsorship or the ability to buy big box store quantities resulting in slightly higher prices, but very much improved quality. To the people complaining about the service; when I was there shopping there were only two people working, which as an adult who works in retail customer service understands, just because it's not busy inside, it doesn't mean the worker's are not busy. I highly recommend Black Horse Farm for great plants, delicious baked goods, and friendly local service. I even want to mention that when it comes to customer service, one of the employees overheard me talking about Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and when I mentioned they didn't have any, they went to the back and got one for me that was still cooling; that's customer service. So, if you are someone who appreciates the nuance of shopping local, I can not recommend Black Horse Farm enough, but if you're a whiny adult who needs their hand held at all times while shopping, and gets offended with someone quickly answering a question while continuing to do their work (again, small staff but still lots of work to do), perhaps you should go to a corporate big box store. Me, I know where I'm going, and it's to Black Horse Farm!

To everyone bitching about the prices, it's called gentrification, if you don't like it, stop moving here, flipping houses into overpriced Airbnb vacation spots. Some of my favorite business owners are gruff. That's how you stay in business. You stand your ground while people give you one star reviews for literally surviving this life. Get over yourself. We get our turkey here every year. And after reading some of these one star reviews, I'm gonna go lay down some dollars next week. Some of you don't deserve black horse farms.

My farmers are my friends, and I am not at all some invisible number amidst their fairly full & growing CSA. As members, we don't just receive weekly shares in a place where we know the farmers and know where & how our (safe, healthy, organic) food is grown, but we have access to -- my favorite -- the picking garden. Each week of the entire growing season, we are invited and encouraged to walk through the picking garden, making a flower bouquet to take home, and cutting the herbs we'd need in the coming week. You know how people join places like Berkshire Botanical Gardens? Walking through the picking garden, gathering peace in the sunshine is that. And it's a kind of home, a kind of deep connection to where our food comes from and to the people who work on the land to cooperate with the earth and, in much sweat, bring the goodness to us. I have multiple health problems - stressful chronic health needs that are deeply met by fresh organic food. I can't eat processed food at all. I know I need vegetables constantly. I want to support my local farmers. A CSA makes sense. And these farmers support ME in healthy community -- you've gotta hear about the potlucks! Learning about bread-making from a local author was February and I'm still super-excited! -- and healthy community, by every health and longevity study, is THE factor to be rich in. You'll be exposed to poetry too.

The chickens are laying, so hustle to the market early so you can snatch yours up (if the Pleasantville Farmers' Market is any indication, the eggs sell out fast!). I recently tried one of their chickens when I realized they bring them FRESH to the market. They are pricey, but they are fresh, beautiful, and taste unbelievable-- unlike any chicken I've ever eaten. Anyway, their farming methods are what they refer to as "biodynamic," (organic, sustainable, and all that good stuff!) and you can find out more if you look at their website. Michael Pollan would approve. The animals are humanely raised and treated well-- the proof is in the pudding.

We ran into a bit of a snag when the butcher had accidentally with-held one of our 3 boxes of beef. It took a while to straighten it out, but in the end Cecille drove a few hours to our doorstep to deliver it along with some money back and a sincere apology. This is one of those instances where the handling of the problem made the business look better than if there weren't one to begin with. The only other small issue you may look out for is that some of the packages had a little moisture int them. Double sealing them and using them first is our plan. We're hoping that they go Certified Organic by next year for our next order as they said they are hoping to do. After all was said and done we are happy customers!

I opted for the bi-week pick up for $235 = 8 weeks at the actual farm in Standfordville. Not knowing what to expect as I'm a complete newbie at this, I called for more info. Dave was so helpful on the phone, explaining how things works, where to park, when to come, etc. So I decided to join to try it out! When I arrived the first time, Dave was there to greet me and show me around - basically there's a sign-in sheet at the barn entrance along with a weekly newsletter. Bring your own reusable bags and also the thin plastic bags for produce (they have it there, but you can reuse the ones you get from grocery to save the planet). There's a big blackboard showing you what the share of the week is - It's the MAX amount you can take - so get all or get what's right for you. All of the produce are lay out neatly and orderly - it's really a fool-proof system and signs everywhere telling you how many you can take. There are also info on produce profile, food storage, and recipes along the back wall. They also have a section for "PYO" - pick your own! This is for your to go out to the garden and pick from the plant itself! Usually it always comprise flowers and herbs. It's only my second week, but I just LOVE how fresh the produce taste, LOVE having fresh flowers at home, and LOVE trying new recipes with vegetables we usually don't eat. It also forces me to eat more vegetables so i can clean out my fridge for the next pickup. Although I don't have any previous experience on CSA, but I do think this is as good as it gets!!
