Route 66, the historic Highway that starts in downtown Chicago and ends at the Santa Monica Pier!!! What made this Highway so famous was that it was the first all weather Highway and, at the time, reduced the distance between Chicago and LA by around 200 miles. There's a lot of interesting history on this highway, so when I saw the sign, my first thought was of that super old TV show called Route 66!! Also known as 'The Main Street of America' or 'The Mother Road' this highway crosses 8 states. I think you can still drive most of the route, nice to find a little piece of American history on the Santa Monica Pier!!

U.S. Route 66 or U.S. Highway 66 is also known as the Will Rogers Highway, or the Main Street of America or the Mother Road. US 66 was one of the original highways in the United States. Route 66 touches 8 states in total including: - Illinois - Missouri - Kansas - Oklahoma - Texas - New Mexico - Arizona - California Route 66 covers a total of 2,448 miles and has been featured in songs, television shows and movies. Large numbers of people travel this route via auto, motor cycle and bike, experiencing the route in its entirety. Should be noted that the start point is in Chicago and the ending point is at the pier in Santa Monica. I've been to the beginning and the end, now need to travel through the route .... time for a road trip!

Route 66, the end of the road here at the Santa Monica pier. It's unbelievable to think that this runs all the way to Chicago. There is plenty to do and see here, and my family and I always make a stop here while in LA

It is on top/in the Pier. It is nice to see the sign and say that you were at the end of it. Other than that, not much more to it.

Up and down the street are topiary sculptures called "The Dinosaurs of Santa Monica". Some of these dinosaur topiaries shoot streams of water from their mouths. At the south end of Third Street Promenade is a enclosed shopping center called Santa Monica Place. I used to visit Third Street Promenade a lot back in my younger days. We would grab a bite to eat and then hit a few stores after a long day at the beach. I was here recently and there was hardly anyone here. The vibe just wasn't the same. The Jacaranda Trees are pretty when they are blooming. I like coming here in the evenings when the lights are on. Some popular stores here at Third Street Promenade are Patagonia, Lululemon, Anthropologie, H&M and Urban Outfitters. On occasional evenings, you can catch live music and street performers. Third Street Promenade has a farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm.

Although the experience is billed as "self-guided", during my visit a docent opened the slider to the home, allowing a better view inside, and discussed different aspects of the house with us in a very informal manner. The experience is mostly visual but if you have questions, ask away. I've no doubt the docents can answer anything you might wish to know about the Eames house and the Eames themselves. Walk the property and enjoy its natural beauty. Take a look at the map to reveal that the surrounding houses are (or were) case studies for other types of mid-century home designs. A visit to the Eames house (overseen by the Eames Foundation, advance reservations accepted), will likely take up no more than 45 minutes of your time but you'll feel like you've seen something unique and historical and forevermore you'll likely spot images of the immediately recognizable home in books and magazines allowing you to say "I've been there".

I've been a couple times now, the first time I don't recall any issues, but recently I found the docents oddly unfriendly. As I waited for a friend to use the restroom, they kept peering out of their office to check on me as though I was looking for trouble. Their problem was that you're not supposed to explore the bottom level without guidance. It's a stupid rule. The museum is small enough to explore in less than 30 minutes, so being forced to have someone guide you makes it feel very stuffy. It'd be much nicer to simply offer a guide, that's the point of a docent, I thought. Maybe just go in and ignore them, it'll be more entertaining that way.
