One of the newest and most creative stops along Oklahoma's Route 66!
At first glance, I thought this would be a quick photo opportunity. Thirty minutes later, I was still walking around discovering new details. The "You Are Here" push pin marks the midpoint of Oklahoma's 400+ miles of Route 66, and the artwork is incredible.
Don't make the mistake of only taking a picture from the front. Walk underneath the monument! The underside features a colorful Route 66 map highlighting the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica, while every panel tells part of the Mother Road's story through Oklahoma's landscapes, wildlife, aviation, and iconic destinations.
One of my favorite parts of the visit had nothing to do with the monument itself. We met another Route 66 traveler headed to Winslow, Arizona, to visit his daughter. We admired each other's patriotic shirts , shared a few travel stories, and wished him an early happy birthday before continuing our separate journeys. That's the magic of Route 66--it's as much about the people you meet as the places you visit.
If you're exploring Route 66 through Oklahoma, don't drive past this stop. Bring your camera, take your time, and look at it from every angle. It's a wonderful tribute to the Mother Road and a perfect way to begin--or continue--your Route 66 adventure. read more
