I just got a place out here and even after visiting Bullhead City, Laughlin, and the Colorado River for 30 years, I learned SO much at the museum. It is free (suggested, zero-pressure $3 donation) and they have a little gift shop with cool BHC and Colorado River items, all very fairly priced. See the old school house too! Totally a must-visit place in Bullhead City. Just take note of the hours so you don't miss the window of opportunity!

I don't know why I have never been through here in my entire life, but it was neat to see the landscape and feeling like I was playing Frogger as I was trying to avoid all the potholes in the 2 lane road. One random stop we came across in the middle of the preserve was the Kelso Depot. I only stopped because I saw that there was a restroom that we could use, and then was surprised to see an actual visitor center to peruse. From the signage out front here's the history: "Built in 1924, the Kelso Depot housed a train station, ticket and telegraph office, restaurant, reading room, and dormitory rooms for railroad employees. It was often called the Kelso Club House, a Union Pacific Railroad term for employee boarding and recreational facilities. As railroad technology improved and fewer personnel were needed, the Depot became obsolete. It was closed in 1985, and Union Pacific planned to raze the building. Concerned citizens intervened and the building was saved. It was renovated and reopened as a National Park Service Visitor Center in October 2005." The Depot is currently under construction as of 12/2025, but you can walk around the building and peek in through the windows. Apparently the area around the depot was like a little village during WW II. It's neat to imagine what life would've been like living out here in the middle of nowhere back in the 1940's. There's no internet out in Kelso, but you can log into the NPS Wi-Fi while you're there.

This place was a lifesaver! Bathrooms just when we needed them! We were in that Saturday I-15…read morererouted to I-40 craziness. Took us 10 hours from Huntington Beach to Vegas. We took a Waze suggestion which ended up saving us two hours. Happened upon the Kelso Depot just at the right time. We're so grateful to these guys keeping their bathrooms open even when the visitor center is closed.

This site is open for hiking, relaxing and enjoying the landscape, including the natural springs. (The former resort buildings are currently the Desert Studies Center and not accessible to the public.) But you can tour the springs, hike around the area, birdwatch, and enjoy the facilities including picnic tables and a restroom. The site is right next to a dry lake, adding unique scenery. The springs were previously well-known to the Native Americans, who kindly shared the location with the Europeans, only for it to be turned into a business that then went under due to a con man. Sound familiar? Free admission, free parking. Beautiful spot to take a break on the way to Vegas.

There are a few launches on Lake Mead, and we tend to head to Princess the most as there seems to be less hustle and bustle and it is closer to the coves we like to snag for the day. You can get an annual pass and that will save you some money. If you are there often it would be worth it. We love the river, however so much more relaxing to find a cove and just chill. We prefer to stay at Princess Cove because it is away from the river and that is where the crowds are. Princess Cove has a boat dock and their is plenty of packing at the hilltop. Please be mindful to pick up all trash to preserve this environment.

A well placed tribute to the service men and women of all branches of the military. Located on the…read moreLaughlin, NV side of the Colorado river. This Hwy is a spur off of Veterans Memorial Highway also know as US 95. Several US flags are placed at this memorial as well as each flag of the US military including Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Located nearby are piers and docks that will bring you to the waters edge of the Colorado River. On this day we were able to see many duck species that were playing in the water. The flags were also standing tall with the desert wind gusting.

Scenic (and dangerously scary) drive in Oatman AZ…read more Route 66 crosses the top of the Black Mountains via Sitgreaves Pass (elevation 3,523 feet). This was a fun and scary drive part of Historic Route 66! When hubby was driving on this mountain pass on our way to Oatman, I had to cover my eyes sometimes but then I would get dizzy so I kept my eyes open LoL! It took us about 45 minutes to reach the town of Oatman driving through an entirely paved road with very few guardrails. I would not attempt driving this road after dark. Sitgreaves Pass is listed in the website of dangerousroads.org. I snapped a screenshot of the description and the ride experience. It's an old gas station covered in rocks and the mountain behind and currently a tourist stop with gift shop. Cool roadside stop. The town of Oatman was lovely and not too busy so the road wasn't either so made it a nice drive for us.
