Consistently the best range of records in Melbourne. Really a shop for the heads and serious listeners.

That's my very long way of telling you that that very song started as a demo tape at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama many years ago...long before we'd even heard of Scientology. And that really has not much to do with Muscle Shoals Records, situated up the northern end of Lygon Street, except of course in name, and the fact that the legendary recording studios were probably the inspiration for this very excellent record store. Muscle Shoals specialises in new and secondhand vinyl for the bargain hunter to the discerning record collector. They get new stuff in all the time so you should visit often to make sure you don't miss anything good. And this place is so good that you can even pick up a record player here to play your new-secondhand records on. There's also 70s and 80s stereo equipment (amps and stuff) and you get a warranty with your purchase too. They don't have a website but you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

This place seemed nice. Cosy little record store in my local area of Brunswick East. Took my vinyl…read moreplayer in just to get serviced really. Had been a while since plays, had gathered a bit of dust and could probably do with a service and a new stylus. Buttons on the tape deck were a little wonky too. Unfortunately those last two things were the only parts they helped with. After a week or so I got a call from *someone* in the store saying "all good, come in and pick it up". He was quite helpful and came to the store early to let me pick it up. A few days later when I had a chance I set it up at home to find that the record player wasn't even working! This seemed very strange since last time we had used it that part was working fine. Very frustrating since I'd paid $170 for a simple job. Not able to take it back in for another week or so due to work hours not matching with the opening hours of the store, when I finally did the guy I spoke to, *a guy*, didn't seem very helpful at all compared to *someone" who I had originally dealt with. He took forever to find a pen to take down my details and gave no time frame as to when it would even be looked at. A week or so later I was in the area and thought I'd check in to see what was happening. Lazing about the store was *a guy*, "oh yeah the person who does the repairs is away at the moment". So any idea of when he can look at it? "Oh he might be coming into the store on Saturday, you could try coming in then and speaking to him". Unprofessional mate. I mean, I'm not expecting deluxe service from you like at JB Hi-Fi or some big chain store, but the least you could have done was called me and given me some kind of update. Don't leave me hanging, that's all I was asking for. So then a week later with still no word at all I decided to call in and just grab the player and take my business elsewhere. His reply when I asked to take it was something like, "oh yeah I don't think that's been looked at yet". Thanks! All in all it took nearly 2 months and it's now broken and I have to take it somewhere else. Don't bother going there for a service. Not worth your troubles. ----UPDATE 08/05/13--- So I received a late night call from "a guy" from the shop (possibly drunk) saying I had to remove the names from this review "or else" basically. Saying things like, "Brunswick East is a small town", "i'll keep calling you until you remove it" etc etc. This changes nothing on how I feel, you still ripped me off. You own the store and you still gave me bad service. And now you've just pissed me off even more.

Brunswick Bound is a particularly thoughtful bookshop. Not overly small and not large like the…read morechain stores, it caters to a variety of broad and specialty interests. There's a great range of locally designed cards, stationary and the odd bit of craft that make for great presents. A lot of the cards have some very cheeky local jokes on them, such as the cards with a photo of a zone 2 sign as part of the statement "I'd go to zone 2 for you" that were in stock about a year back. It also sells a small range of CDs and vinyl, as well as DVDs, journals and magazines. There's also a small gallery space upstairs that hosts bimonthly exhibits of local artists work. The staff are all avid book lovers and will happily talk you through your purchase or recommend something. It's also not too expensive, though obviously an independent bookstore rather than a discount outlet. Always worth a look in when gift shopping, or any other time really.

It's also a bit of an oasis of calm in here if Sydney Road is giving you aural overload. There's lots of great books, music, and knick-knacky gift type things to look at, so take your time about it. Grab a few books and find a spare spot on a sofa and just take a load off. If you've found the books you want but you're still not ready for pavement pounding, upstairs is a small, sun-flooded art gallery, and another space in which to meditate. Exhibitions here usually feature local artists. Brunswick Bound hosts the occasional author event too, so visit their beautiful website and get your name on their mailing list to keep in touch.

I'm always up for a second-hand bookshop, and this is certainly a decent one. Okay, it isn't huge,…read morebut like a lot of this places it does happen to have a pretty decent collection. However, the collection also tends to be pretty random so, like a lot of these places, the joy comes down to actually see what is on the shelf. I found some decent books, and as is typical, ended up walking out with more than I actually knew what to do with. It is tucked away off the main road, but still worth checking out if you happen to be down this way.

'So what?' you say. Well, I don't know about anyone else but, usually when I enter a second hand book shop, the first thing I'm asked to do is remove my bag because I obviously look like a book theif, and then I'm often treated with a distant rudeness like I'm somehow interupting the ebb and flow of the vendor's day. Not so with Already Read. This bloke is cheery and engaging. He usually seems up for a bit of a chat and stocks great quality, sought after titles; not just best sellers and fuckin' Dan Brown. He keeps multiple copies of the greats and has a large cache out back if you can't find something in the well ordered shelves. Seriously, as far as second hand book shops go, this is the one.
