We went during the Haunted Pumpkin Halloween Festival and there was a magic show, face painter, petting zoo, lots of play equipment, haunted house, cemetery tours, train ride, a few different food vendors, mini market, corn shooting, drum circle, etc. Really so much to do. If you have older kids who have the patience to spend the time you could probably spend a full 3-4 hours. But even a working farm needs to do maintenance. Some rips in the plastic slide, old playground equipment, buildings and signs that need some paint. Hands down the most frustrating was lack of directions. My toddler wanted to ride the train so bad but we couldn't figure out where to get on. The regular train station had a sign saying the trail was too muddy there and you had to catch the train at the shooting gallery. But we waited there for 15 minutes and the train didn't come. There also was no signage around the shooting gallery to indicate the train would have picked you up there. We even asked a staff member who sent us on a wild goose chase back towards the petting zoo. We ended up getting frustrated and going home.

I'm very pleased to say that the issue was resolved and for that they get 4 stars from me! See below if you want to hear the story: I sent my husband to the store with my toddler to go pick out some fancy cupcakes for my birthday dinner. We already had a grown up Marble Slab ice cream cake set aside for adults but wanted our daughter to have fun so we thought this was a great idea! When they came back from Safeway, she handed me a box of 4 beautiful Tinkerbell and Winnie the Pooh cupcakes. I have always been impressed by the selection of children's cupcakes at Safeway: various Disney characters, Sesame street characters, etc. Many times the character's face is actually a ring the child wear after eating the cupcake! They are always quite pretty and VERY reasonably priced at $1.50 a piece. There aren't flavour options like the gourmet cupcake shops - but gorgeous and perfect for a toddler! Also a great idea for birthday parties since they are only $1.50 a piece, come proportioned, and usually come with a party favour in the form of a ring! Anyhoo, she handed me the box of 4 - and I was happy for her - but then she told me she had gotten more. Okay, where are they? She handed me the grocery bag with 3 more cupcakes each placed individually in a plastic square container that WASN'T tall enough to stand the cupcake up in nor small enough around to prevent the cupcakes from rolling all over the place! So the cupcakes had naturally rolled all over the place and Piglet, Winnie, & someone else I can't even recall was decapitated and smushed! I asked my husband if they had run out of containers or if he had packaged them up like this for some reason and he said that the Bakery clerk did this! He advised that they had originally selected 4 cupcakes which were placed in the APPROPRIATE cupcake packaging but then my daughter kept seeing more cupcakes she wanted and they ended up adding 3 more - but 1 at a time. Well, regardless - even if you were only buying 1 cupcake it shouldn't be given to you in a container not designed for a cupcake! This looked more like a sandwich box! I fumed for a bit and then decided to call the store and ask to speak with a manager. First, I spoke with customer service who didn't offer any suggestions other than putting me through to the lady who packaged the cupcakes for my husband - Uh, no thanks! So then I spoke with the store manager who apologized and said he would have the bakery manager get back to me asap. Approximately 15 minutes later, I received a phone call from the Bakery manager apologizing and stating that he spoke with the employee and asked to see what she packaged our cupcakes in. He said he didn't need any further explanation because as soon as he saw the containers he could imagine how the cupcakes looked by the time they got to their final destination. He asked if I would like to come back to the store to replace the cupcakes. We only live a few minutes away so that wasn't a problem. I asked if he wanted me to bring back the 3 decapitated cupcakes or if I should just give them to my toddler (rather than my dinner party guests) and he offered for her to keep them. Upon arriving at the store, I was greeted by a not too friendly bakery clerk - I figured out later that it was the same one who had packaged the cupcakes earlier. None the less, I had my daughter say "Please" and "Thank you" to the, ahem, "nice cupcake lady." I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a variety box of 6 character cupcakes waiting all packaged up for us free of charge. Now, while I wish the cupcakes hadn't been poorly packaged in the first place - it was nice to have the customer service issue corrected promptly and thoughtfully. I stopped on the way out of the store to thank the manager and we took our cupcakes home. So in the end - I had sent my husband to the store to pick up 4 cupcakes - he came home with 7 - then we got another 6 free of charge - for a total of 13 cupcakes, good lord! We packaged up 4 cupcakes and delivered them to the neighbour girls and went on a car ride to deliver two adorable cupcakes to our nieces who were sick and couldn't come to the dinner party. Thank you, Safeway, for correcting an unfortunate experience. The least I can do is give you credit where it's due!

A shopper ahead of me with a large $300 order, while I wait for another cash to open with my six items. The female manager decides its a great time to talk to the busy male cashier about shift policy with another employee, slowing down the line even more. This store is poorly run, by the same tired crew from the 90's. No responsibility about wrongly priced items, they will fight you to the bone about scanning code of practice. No thx.

I was at this location today looking for a few things in the pharmacy section. I was passed by at least 6, probably more, store associates who could barely nod their head at me, let alone offer any help, including the pharmacist, who's section I was in for nearly 10 minutes. I come from a retail background, and I know how important guest interaction is. I find this area of the city to be generally poor for customer service, and this Save On contributes to that. I'm very sorry to be leaving a review like this, but I really think this place could benefit from a little more customer service and friendliness.

Don't get me wrong, I love supporting these adorable local groceries when I can, but I just love, love LOVE that a large chain grocery store has such an excellent selection of the exact same products/brands, be it food, cleaning supplies, or beauty products. Did I mention that throughout the isles they also have big green iron borders around all of the natural foods, to make it SUPER easy to find. However, I must say if you're looking for a WIDE variety of fresh organic produce you really have to hit this location on the right day. They always stock a revolving assortment of interesting produce (tomatillos, purple potatoes, a bunch of root things I've had to google) but, sadly, not in their organic section. They also have a great assortment of unique/local preserves, cheeses and dips. Great for anyone planning a tapas/charcuterie plate for their next potluck. Well done, Hippie Save On!

Now you can find their amazing homemade products at Sobeys, the Italian Centre, Bon Ton Bakery, Good Earth Groceries, Paddy's Cheese Shop, Sunterra Market and a few other more exclusive shops in town. Their pasta sauces are to die for. They use all fresh ingredients and it tastes gourmet, not like something you just bought on a store shelf. I think it's so wonderful that small local outfits can sell their products around town, giving Edmontonians premium local options. Why funnel our hard-earned dollars to the other side of the border when we can keep it local and support creative entrepreneurs in our own community. Kudos, ladies! Your culinary talents are a joy to my palette.

We didn't mind walking after parking in the residential area. The variety of vendors are great. There will also be the ones selling produce, but there were also plenty of food vendors sampling tastes and some options were ready to consume. If not, there are numerous food trucks available and some seating which is always great when you don't have walk and eat. It can get crowded but I find the layout is not too congested and I was able to walk around and see the items I wanted to. In addition to food, there's jewelry, clothing, and home decor. here's a kid's play area and the library was also open inside. There are porta potties but also toilets inside too. Great place to spend a Saturday morning or afternoon!

They blow a fog horn at 10am when the vendors are allowed to start selling their wares and it blows again at 3pm when the market closes. There are so many vendors at this market and they rotate from week to week and year to year. Some booths are consistent and show up every year while others may come only a few weeks of the year. Of course there is the classic food vendors: garden produce, fresh seasonal fruit, hot food/drink (food trucks), and custom foods (pies, cookies, beef jerky, fresh/frozen meats, perogies, etc). But there are a lot more hand made items: wooden patio furniture, jewelry, garden items, knit clothing, and other knick nacks. And there are the alcohol suppliers now: craft wines, craft beers, distilleries, mead, and doesn't kombucha even have a little bit of booze in it? ;) A few of my favorite anchor booths are listed below. Viravongsa's Farms: they have a legit farm near Red Deer and offer the freshest locally grown produce. Family owned and operated and their prices are fair. Confetti Sweets: They offer a great selection of cookies. You can buy them as a single or get a volume discount if you buy 3 or more. My favorite is the Oatmeal chocolate chip.

I haven't been out to Riverbend Gardens (yet), but I've been a subscriber to their CSA for two…read moreyears now, as well as a customer at City Centre market before that. I love what they do, from their veggies to their online presence. You can visit the farm as well, to pick saskatoons or visit their greenhouse, but I haven't done that yet. Their CSA is a great way to make sure you're eating your veggies, and to expand your vegetable horizons. Each week, you get an assortment of vegetables. They let you know a day in advance, and there are a few standards (potatoes and onions usually), but often you end up with something that might be new to you. Last year I learned all kinds of ways to cook fennel! It is pretty reasonably priced too; around $25/week depending on the size you get, and we didn't have to buy vegetables anywhere else once the CSA started. The CSA keeps expanding, adding more and more pickup locations each year. Riverbend partners with various other local businesses, which serve as pick up locations for the veggie bags. I've been picking up at Acme Meat Market, which makes for a lot of delicious meals in the summer and fall. Love it!

But to know them is to love them and since being on a tour of their farm I really really love their veggies. A bus tour of the great farm land in Edmontons NE was held by Live Local and GEA. The tour visited 6 great producers all sitting on healthy productive farmland. On the tour I met the family that farms Riverbend, I saw the beautiful farm and learned about their farming practices/land stewardship. They recently added CSA (Community supported agriculture) with 3 delivery sites in the city. You can sign up for next year and have fresh veggies delivered. Their Spanish onions are so superior to the ones that we find in stores. Many store bought veggies are travel hardy but not very exciting to taste. Riverbend has lovely varieties of corn and they are having a great corn year. They tend to get their veggies to market very early in spring due to their micro climate. So in these categories I give them 5 stars: helping to develop local food economy, great tasting veggies, civic boosters (they love Edmonton and sell locally/hire locally), advocates (they are working with others to educate people about the importance of good land use planning), support of CSA.
