Got to sample their jerk chicken wings, jerk chicken wings, lamb skewers, Mac n cheese, watermelon with haloumi skewers and their steak lettuce cups! Hot dam! It's been a long, long time since dancing on the pool tables in what used to be the Bentley Bar. This venue has had a few different revisions, but recently opened Rosie Campbell's has got my vote! A friend booked the bench table for a group of 15 give or take, as in true Sydney fashion she really had no idea who was actually going to show up. We ordered some share menu items, as well as a few went for the jerk chicken burgers and crab burgers, along with Carabbean style cocktails (some served in coconut shells) and Red Stripe beer (Notting Hill Carnival flashbacks mun!), Staff were flexible, attentive and friendly. Food was delicious and substantial, and the reggaeish music selection was authentic and original. Well done! read more

We bumped this place on a Friday night by chance. Since we did not have reservations they let us sit on the stools. We ordered their signature dish, Caribbean jerk chicken and it did not disappoint. Just nicely done. The banana fries could have been a little sweeter and more tender. Good cocktails too. read more

We stumbled into Rosie's after a long day of romping about Sydney. It's one of the few good places that doesn't shutter in between the lunch and dinner service so if you're hungry at the awkward 4pm slot, you're in luck! The drinks are strong and varied. Hearty servings too! Our group of 6 split the chicken wings (huge) and variably ordered sweet potatoes fries, jerk chicken that came with rice and peas with an added mac and cheese on the side (how could you not at this place?) and some pseudo quesadillas. There were more but I was distracted by the overwhelming good strong flavors on my plate and the very strong old fashioned I nursed throughout dinner. And oh shit. The rum cake. Just get it. You will thank me. Good sized space, friendly if a bit slow service ( we were at an awkward time after all) and decor is kitschy without being tacky. read more

Some sort of pop-Australianised improvisation about what would someone who has never travelled to Carrabean expect to eat in a Carrabean restaurant ;-) read more

Is Caribbean food having a 'moment' in Surry Hills? Not Quite Nigella tells me that Jonkanoo has opened up a few blocks down on Crown Street towards Cleveland. Queenies is only a few blocks away on Riley Street. And now Rosie Campbell's, opening where Chow Bar and Eating House was (which I loved) and before that the Bentley Bar (which I really loved). What I really wanted to try were their Jamaican patties, since there was a Jamaican patty shop near my elementary school in Vancouver and it's a foodstuff that's wired into my brain since childhood. But they were out on the day, and paying $7 for a patty instead of $2 may have weirded me out. I had instead slow-cooked ribs, served with a coleslaw and fries, and my pal D had a soft-shell crab burger. And coffee. I thought the service was fantastic; and they were trying hard to please and be nice. I found my food fine, but not special. Sauce a little heavy on the coleslaw. D. thought his soft-shell crab was nice but wasn't sure whether he liked the concept of it in a burger. $50 for the two of us for lunch was perhaps a bit pricy. A sunny winter afternoon in Sydney; the decor trying to evoke a Caribbean beachside shack: it was a bit surreal. In the very tough and competitive market of Surry Hills, it will be interesting to see how their mellow vibe attracts customers. read more

Food was excellent, nice atmosphere, love the reggae' a bit more than the rap. They had the Caribbean drink Ting, which we love and the cocktails were tasty. The corn fritters were delicious and the crab was quite large. read more

Preview night for something that's going to be obviously freak'n fabulous! Glad I came tonight because waiting in line will be the only thing that turns me away from here! The owner seems to be a really nice guy, fully into its his concept! If the menu is anything like the preview, Rosie's is going to rock n roll the hills! Didn't get to work the bar as it was limited to the night. Can't imagine it will be anything less than the kitchen! Interested to see the pricing though, hopefully not banking on the duel 'single' income set! It would be great to go out and have more than one bottle of wine with meal that you don't have to top up once you get home! read more

Can't recommend this place highly enough. Bright, fun and lively with great quality, perfectly spiced food. Went tonight and had half a dozen cocktails and both the tasting platters, topped off with a rum cake which came in at just under $200. Between two people with normal appetites this was plenty of food, the portions were generous enough for us but if you're a big eater you may want an extra side just to fill it out. Everything including the food, drinks, atmosphere and service was top notch. Our waitress Carol was friendly, helpful, and attentive, and when I ordered the wrong cocktail (entirely my fault) she spoke to the manager and they brought me the one I wanted on the house anyway. It's little touches like that that really set this place apart from others. My only very minor complaint is that they had run out of plantain chips which I really wanted to try, but that's just a great excuse for us to come back! For a fun evening with a great soundtrack, do yourself a favour and try this place, you won't be disappointed. We'll definitely be back! read more

I was dragged into Surry Hills from the North Shore on a very rainy night to a cool surprise Jamaican diner -with a mix of America, Jamaica and South America. It feels like home somehow and the food is not only tasty but is reasonably priced and gargantuan in serving size! $18 for my soft shelled crab burger (I ain't never had one of those)and Jamaican seasoned chips(same size meal in Mosman is $28..)Don't order too much like I did, you won't be able to finish. With an interesting cocktail menu (which is the standout after the decor) this is a good place for a casual dinner out. The menu is easy - think burgers with a Caribbean feel - crab, jerk chicken (that was a little underwhelming). The starters/share plates were the best part of the food menu. The lightly fried squid with a dipping sauce was tasty and cooked perfectly. The service was good but the door staff were a little rude so it set our expectations low. However the staff inside, and our server in particular, made up for that bad start. read more

For a Tuesday night, we're off to a solid start. The place is busy. It would seem Graham Cordory's Experience Group have found their groove. First up was the live music haven: The Soda Factory. Offering gourmet food and a late license it's a reliable go to. Especially for those either working in hospo or just wanting to blow off some steam in a fun, moderately refined, basement-like environment. But back to Rosie's. Now settled in, our server Tash tells us Graham C was inspired by the vibrancy of Jamaica. But it gets more interesting the more she opens up. The core inspiration was in handing over this 'seed' concept. Giving the brief to his team of passionate front-liners, it was then their job to execute. And looking at the walls, ceiling, posters, tables and music selection, this all makes sense. The place is a high intensity of collaboration, local talent and young ambitious energy. A good injection into the somewhat sedated Surry Hills. And the boys in the kitchen. Following on from the now demolished chicken wings, we'd move to the iris salad, dem belly full ribs, Mac and Cheese, sweet potato fries and the island salad with jerk chicken. A well balanced, somewhat carb-heavy selection. The M&C topped with roasted coconut and the fries with a dusting of brown sugar. Unusual additions, but they're enough for my flavour-seeking Canadian buddies to sink a little lower in their seats .. Our table being made up of regular-travellers, they appreciate the notion of a local take on foreign grub. And even more so notion of being entrusted with a cultural mash-up. On the down side, there does seem to be a distinct lack of taxidermy at Rosie Campbell's. With this trend spread across Sydney, no surprises when the first minute of any venue's experience is spent in search of the mounted moose head or deer rear. Not one. I remove one star because the lack of them still brought the idea of them to my mind. Rosie Campbell's : 4 Stars. Well done to the kitchen & FOH team for their execution. Rosie Campbell's has a great vibe. I came on a Friday night and was able to score a table near the bar. They do table service so my friend and I were able to chat the night away, without having to make trips to the bar to get drinks. We shared the tasting platter which had jerk chicken wings, corn fritters, crumbed braised beef balls, and crispy squid. We also had some pork dumplings. Every dish was well cooked and delicious. Staff regularly came around to check that we had enough water, and to see if we wanted to order more drinks or food. We didn't try any cocktails, but it's a Jamaican inspired rum bar so I suspect the cocktails would be good. I also topped up my good karma jar the night I was there, handing in to the bar staff a woman's handbag that she had accidentally left hanging on the back of the toilet door. read more

What used to be the old Bentley is now a cool Carribbean restaurant with fancy cocktails and a cool menu. We came here at 8pm on Easter Sunday and it was absolutely packed! They were definitely short staffed and their dirty dishes/glassware was stacked way up at the bar. Our waitress was most likely on her own, and the bartender made his way out of the bar to hand-deliver the cocktails. We had some hot rum and the Hurricane, which were delicious. Lots of items sold out, such as their daiquiri special and the cured kingfish which I was disappointed about! Had the soft shell crab burger instead. Not a clean eat, and I'm not usually in love with deep fried? But I could taste lots of crab between mouthfuls and it was delicious. Unfortunately, the ribs was more of a miss. The marinade was a bit over bearing and cranked all the way up to the max! A bit difficult to eat. But all in all, great experience and will definitely be back. read more

Perhaps it was an off night... food was good but service was horrible. Only two waitstaff in whole restaurant and one was behind the bar. Two of us ordered drinks and only one arrived. Reordered after waiting a while to find the waitress to order it and then had to remind her when it did not arrive. Dirty glasses stacked at the end of the bar because there was no one to wash them. Last, $20 for a cocktail is a bit steep! Sorry I had to write this but it could be a great little restaurant if someone was managing it better and there was better service. read more
