The best part was the wonderful woman who welcomed me at check-in Saturday afternoon; she was the definition of "Southern hospitality ". I was greeted with a warm smile and efficiency. The owners use that as an excuse not to employ daily housekeepers) I have to go back soon and will stay here again.

The drive from the coast to the Triangle has extremely sparse hotel offerings and after we checked out a few motels that could contend for Creepiest Bates-Like Motel Experience, we were relieved to find this clean and affordable hotel with extremely comfortable beds, breakfast included, and all that you need for a good night's sleep. Water smelled of straight chlorine to the point where I was afraid to brush my teeth or take a shower. Being a last minute reservation they only had smoking rooms left. As a smoker, I normally don't stay in smoking rooms because of the lingering smell, but I will if I have to. Normally, it doesn't bother me, but the air wouldn't stay on to keep the air moving unless we kept it at 60 degrees! And the blankets were questionable as to whether or not they had been washed/changed, so it was a freezing night for us, to say the least. Carpet was stained and covered in burns. It looked like Days Inn bought an old nasty crack house and put new furniture, a coat of paint on ONE wall, and new bedspreads to cover up the fact they they are way past due for renovations. Pool was only open until 9PM, never stayed anywhere the pool wasn't open until 10PM. When I commented to the manager about how it wasn't worth $100, it was maybe a $50 room, he said that was because I'd booked online, if I had called the hotel itself it would've been $30 less. Then comp me the $30, because your hotel is disgusting. Did I mention the door wouldn't latch?! If it weren't for the extra lock on the top of the door, anyone could've come in our room. And I mean anyone. Witnessed the departure of an affair, a prostitute trying to make a sale, someone rolling a blunt in the parking lot to smoke, and people who clearly lived at the hotel. Also, in the morning, I saw house keeping go in a room (no cart or anything) and a few minutes later came out with only dirty towels. Didn't change the sheets?? If this hotel came with a $50 price tag, it would've gotten 3 stars from me. But after paying $100 for the experience I had, I cannot give it more than one star.

I don't know that we've ever checked in to a place when the staff is actually working- we tend to dilly dally around so much that our fate has been set; we will always check in after hours. All that to say- as we approach an RV camp site, I'm dreading what kind of fresh hell we are about to discover. This one pleasantly surprised me. The lady said the map would be in the red box at the office. Wa-la there was a map with our name on it, in a red box. WOW!!! And, get this, the map led us to our spot, with a red pen line, and we didn't have to drive in circles in the middle of the night pissing everyone who is sleeping off. Amazing! Here are a few suggestions: Don't have a note on the door that says call or text me I will be there in 5 minutes on our arrival. Take 60 seconds and cut the ivy off the stairs (not safe) take another 60 seconds to wipe down the spider webs and gunk off the front porch. Take a few minutes to remove the old bar of soap off the tub that looks like it was used for a few weeks. Take a few minutes to supply tissues, cups, matching towels, some fresh soap, not a bottle that is almost empty to wash our hands. We did not shower since the little bottles of bath stuff were empty. Fix the TV it was not working the 1st time and we mentioned it, but still no TV. Have another chair in the room and more light (not a pole lamp sitting in the hallway). Don't tell us over the phone that you now don't take Visa, we had to empty our wallets to pay for the room. We paid by Visa on our first visit. Be sure to have some coffee, the table set, the food cooking for breakfast and not arrive after we left. (we said 8 but they heard 8:30) but why was there no one in the house at 8:15 when we left our cash and drove off to Dunkin Donuts. Whoever owns this old gem of a home needs to sell it to someone who can care for it.

The host, Tom, was friendly, funny, and helpful (everything you could want in a host). The place itself is an oasis, off on its own land, but close enough to the gas station if you need any supplies. The land was stunning, with plenty of walking trails, and the cabin felt private and relaxing. My only warnings would be to make sure you have food that you can cook on a charcoal grill or in the microwave since there is no stove or oven, and you cannot make a fire/firepit. There's also no TV so I hope your iPad kids are ready to unplug. And the only shower is outside on the porch, so you'll want to be comfortable with whoever you go to the farm with, because you may be seeing a lot of each other, if you know what I mean!
