We tried: sour cherry and marzipan - delicious, and ginger with large lumps of crystallized ginger - fabulous - there was also a fig which we'll have to go back for, as well as the rye which was sold out. The service was delightful, chatty and smiling. The levain bread (sourdough) tasted delicious and the apricot and hazelnut also. Just makes you want to go back and try them all...

It's become…read moresomewhat a norm now for me to rate chains that I absolutely adore a 4 star as I feel as if I'm cheating on the independent places I know and love so much. For a chain coffee shops/bakery/lunch spot - whatever the true identity of Valerie, they do such a great job of making sure the experience is top notch. It was a tough Sunday morning to say the least, yet as I struggle to sleep in when I've enjoyed a few too many beverages the night before, I was up and about the blustery streets of Sheffield while my friends continued to snooze of the regrettable last round. I pulled out my trusty pocket pal Yelp and looked for a coffee shop that could sort my head and settle my stomach and up pops Valerie. A chocolate cup cake with raspberry frosting and a standard flat white later and I was on my way to feeling human again. Manchester's little sister is doing alright.

At lunchtimes, they do hot roast pork sandwiches which seem very popular and are sold in a variety of sizes. They also sell warm pizzas, flans and other varied tasty treats. They are priced fairly sensibly and service is always quick, friendly and efficient. One thing to note is, if you are in a rush or don't want to queue, try to avoid lunchtime as it does get busy with the nearby school and businesses generating plenty of custom.
