It's become…read moresomewhat a norm now for me to rate chains that I absolutely adore a 4 star as I feel as if I'm cheating on the independent places I know and love so much. For a chain coffee shops/bakery/lunch spot - whatever the true identity of Valerie, they do such a great job of making sure the experience is top notch. It was a tough Sunday morning to say the least, yet as I struggle to sleep in when I've enjoyed a few too many beverages the night before, I was up and about the blustery streets of Sheffield while my friends continued to snooze of the regrettable last round. I pulled out my trusty pocket pal Yelp and looked for a coffee shop that could sort my head and settle my stomach and up pops Valerie. A chocolate cup cake with raspberry frosting and a standard flat white later and I was on my way to feeling human again. Manchester's little sister is doing alright.

The venue is bright, clean & smells of fresh bread. The perfect spot to set up for your laptop enjoy some fresh coffee & a selection of hot and cold food. We nipped in for breakfast and I went for an organic elderflower drink with a ham & cheese toastie like I've never had before. Freshly cooked, melt in your ham hock with their very own home baked bread. If I lived nearby to the Depot Eatery I would definitely be a regular, laptop in hand and I full reccomend it to anyway in the Sheffield. It's worth the walk!

We were greeted by a warehouse filled will tables and chairs in the usually industrial manor. The space main operation is a bakery which i think they supply to local business. But you can purchase the fresh breads and cakes in the restaurant. The menu was simple. Poached egg and bacon for me. With a choice of sourdough, rye or bloomer. The 15min wait for food was expected as the place was full. Good customer service and a nice breakfast definitely worth the walk.

As it was a Monday, it was quite quiet and we were left alone to browse the selection on offer - of which there was a lot. We were told what the specials were for the day, then set about deciding on what we'd be taking home. We ended up with chocolate for dad, mint chocolate for the boyfriend, cappuccino for mum and red velvet for me. I also bought an extra one - praline. Everything was packaged up nicely by the friendly girls that were working and we went on our way with a bag full of sugary goodness. I can't say too much for what the others thought of theirs, other than the phrase 'om nom nom' was used multiple times! My praline cupcake was the richest, most delicious thing I've eaten. As well as chopped hazelnuts in the centre of the frosting, the frosting itself is chocolate and hazelnut. It was so rich I had to take two breaks to get through the entire thing! The red velvet was beautifully moist and had a very thick layer of frosting on top, drizzled with dark chocolate. It tasted gorgeous. So now that I've had my Fancie experience, will I go back for more? Hell yes. Except next time I'll end up with a box of four for me and a box of four for the boyfriend. As someone who visited nearly every weekday for 4 years I think I'm well placed to review, and thought since I knew it so well I'd make it my first review on here. Nigel, the owner of C Thomas, offers a wide selection of classic sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes, etc, and a good variety of freshly cooked bread for your butties, pies, buns, as well as the obligatory drinks, crisps and chocolates. All the bread is freshly made each morning, and it seems like all the ingredients used are of great quality for a sandwich shop. My personal favourite sandwich is definitely the hot bacon, egg and sausage - a true, simple classic, cooked well and with great tasting ingredients. I'm also a sucker for his baked potatoes with cheese & beans, another English classic! Hot sandwiches include all the usual 'breakfast' ingredients (bacon, sausage, tomato, egg, etc), as well as Nigel's famous hot pork and hot turkey, with all the trimmings. Cold sandwich ingredients include beef, pork, turkey & ham; tuna, sweetcorn, cheese, egg mayo, corned beef & potted meat; prawns & crab sticks; and real treats chicken tikka and dripping. All can come with salady, on either a standard breadcake, french stick or large breadcake - fondly referred to by their customers as 'bin lids'! I would definitely recommend C Thomas, or "Nigels" as we all know it. The food is great, but the huge plus is the banter in the shop - Nigel is blessed with true Yorkshire sarcasm, and the banter between him, the ladies who work for him and his customers really does brighten up a dull work day. You know you're a regular when you start to get picked on! The only 'downside' I can think of are that the front of the shop doesn't look massively appealing right now, but look out for the white sign with 'C THOMAS' in red letters. It's on a corner, with parking up the road to the side, off Staniforth Road.
