Such a great little school…read more All three of my girls went and graduated from there and now, my oldest grand daughter goes. Next year, my second oldest will be attending and in just a few more years, my two youngest grandbabies will be attending! Heck, the wifey even worked as an aide way, waaaaaay back in the day! Great teachers, great staff and great facilities. Only problem, (and it really has nothing to do with the school), is the traffic in general, but more specifically, during school hours. Some people don't know how to slow down, watch where they are going or even relinquish the right of way to pedestrians. Always tryin' to beat a damn street signal... There are little ones out there people!!! Slow your dumbasses down and watch out for kids / parents!

What can I say about the joint... Well, it's LAUSD for one…read more The wifey worked in the field of Special Education there for 35+ years and has since retired. They treated her pretty decent so I'm not gonna bitch and moan about the joint. I'll let her do that. We saw lots of peeps, students, staff, etc., come and go over the years. But it has since changed, and significantly at that. With "no child left behind" comes a lot of student mainstreaming, a reduction of attendance, staff and of course, opportunity. But... They service all abilities / all ages and for the most part, have a great staff (hence, the wifey), lol. Plus, it's our polling place when the time comes. One question... Why my pic Yelp, why mine? LOL

It gone from the frying pan to the fire. Gavin is the newly appointed principal. Mary Jullienne…read moreis the new vice principal. I wondered why the teacher was giving false statements about withholding my daughter's voice output device for over two years with, "She doesn't have homework" Our Harbor Regional Counselor interjected he saw her get off the school bus and go straight to her homework desk without being prompted. In the second year of the IDR/Amendment meeting (falsified as a new agreed upon IEP compliments of Gavin) She recanted this statement with, "She does have homework but doesn't do it". The next year the overseer of the IEP team (not a member) straight out said, "Frankly, I don't think you will charge the device overnight". "What would the teacher do?" I responded, "The phone I call you with all my concerns with is charged every day and night". Further, I have to let the public know their children are being rounded up together as a whole in class for only minutes of so-called therapy for speech. It is more minutes than the 10 minutes on Mondays for the whole class with only my daughter's device (still withheld from Alina and family) and the entire school. They closed the doors on us because they know these therapies aren't being done correctly according to the contractual obligation of the IEP. Looks like promotions are in the air from the District because Tina M. (I call her the Tina 9000) won't be back and left the desk for her protégé Gavin (Tina Jr) Mary Jullienne was rewarded for her conduct with a raise and a position of vice principal. I can find peace in knowing at least I know these culprits and I can "Tell" them. The upcoming newer versions are not going to slip ever. And I pray that one day "I'll be Back". And so will parent's rights to educational decision making

Get in contact with a regional center (I recommend Lanterman) and read your parents rights handbook. They expect you not to read the materials and they will do things that are both unethical and illegal to save a buck and not provide your child with the services he/she needs.

I absolutely loved the learning environment at IVA. My son went here as part of the foundational…read moreclass and transferred out when he moved to Seattle. IVA was my school of choice for my son, because LB Unified refused to let my son attend his home school when we moved to another part of Long Beach. LBUSD also made the school selection and enrollment process so much more difficult that I decided to pull my child out altogether. Save the drama for your mama. In comparison, IVA had an easy enrollment and application process. I was able to contact someone from the school every time I had a question or concern. The student-teacher ratio is something LBUSD has historically fallen short on, and with IVA teachers knew my son by name. The learning environment became a small community built on pillars of intellectual virtues. As a parent, I appreciated the one-on-one communication from my child's instructors. I also enjoyed the social gatherings of parents, students and instructors, when I did have time to participate. Really, it's a private school feel without the price tag. My son was afforded opportunities he would have never had experienced in LBUSD as far as athletics and extracurricular activities such as weight lifting club, photography, and yearbook committee. Geographically, the area of the school is a little rough, but the school does have a nice outdoor area in the back for student activities away from the "distractions" of LB Blvd.
