The leadership team is what makes this school so great - they hire well and cultivate a positive work culture among care providers that leads to a pleasant and caring mood within the classrooms each day. Leaders Kayla and Rita especially managed the COVID-19 epidemic phases with clear and open communication, making some tough calls through the various government rule changes, but always ensuring the decisions balanced safety and a high level of service to parents and children. The school is an even balance of enriching activities for some elements of a curriculum, but a lot if free play time too - we preferred this approach for our kids and they loved their time at the school.

When my son first started he was at the Sellwood location, which felt very organized and cohesive to me. Upon picking up my daughter around 5pm I could tell within min something was off, her eyes were red and she had snot and dirt covering her mouth area, and acting weakly while putting her in the car seat she was extremely hot, my first reaction was oh maybe she played to long in the sun and maybe cried over a toy or fell? When I got home I live less than 10 min away, she had a high temp, im in no way blaming anyone for her having a fever what I find unusual is that no one "noticed" well was she upset did she fall or cry? Response I got was no she was fine and playing and took water breaks. Mind you she's not even 2 I would expect someone to notice something may be off. Turned out to be an ear infection. In addition after I msged the staff about the incident I didn't feel like anyone really cared to ask what happened or check. Especially now with COVID , don't you want to know what was the outcome if your kids are attending there? It's a shame cause I think my daughter enjoyed it for the most part. Perhaps this is normal at daycares?

It operates inside a beautiful church though is not affiliated with it at all. The school runs on a co-op model where parents volunteer a small amount every week in some way - either in person or helping with errands or other chores. I thought this might be a pain but I actually really like how it creates a sense of community. I've gotten to know the teachers, other parents and even the students pretty well! When my son was a toddler, the school helped up potty train, which we feel really fortunate about. Now that he's older and in the pre school room he gets a lot of structure and stimulation and the classroom, coming home to tell us what he learned or made each day.

This school has beyond exceeded all of our expectations. Each child is viewed as an individual and the teachers actively structure activities to encourage their innate abilities while thoughtfully supporting development in areas they may find more challenging. Their inquiry based approach to learning was new to us, but we truly believe that our daughter is a more curious, confident thinker as a result of her time here. She comes home from school inspired, happy and content, singing songs in Spanish about baby fish and planets and prattling on and on about the relationships she has forged with other students and her wonderful teachers. We enrolled our child here partially for the language immersion and close-proximity to work but mostly because of the awesome staff. The teachers are visibly excited to teach these young children; they are passionate and dedicated to nurturing young minds. They really focus on getting to know the kids and then base the educational programming on what the kids are interested in and what they need. There is also a very low child-to-staff ratio which will be hard to find elsewhere. I cannot recommend NJA enough!
