So if this one disappears I won't be doing another one. Right here it is. If one considers the tourist office as the centre of Mullingar then this place is about an 8 to 10 minute walk. Mullingar is a charming Irish town with a lot of character and darn good foodie places. Just beside the tourist office stands a statue of Joe Dolan a famous Irish singer alas now dead. I'm pleased to say I saw him live and wow what an unusual voice. He had a number three hit in the UK in the 1969 when the charts had Elvis In the Ghetto (originally titled the Vicious Circle) David Bowie Space Oddity, Credence Clearwater Revival Bad Moon Rising with the amazing voice of John Fogerty who brought bluesy swamp rock to the hippie masses; Fogerty also holds the distinct honour of being one of the few musicians to be sued for sounding too much like himself. I digress again. This centre is a tad unusual as it has local businesses in it including a local barbers, a florist, a jewellers, a fruit & veg shop and a local butchers. Most shopping centres have the usual multi national and national names. This place has Boots, Holland & Barrett, a CarPhone warehouse and also has Dunnes Stores selling food & drink in one store and clothing and shoes in another store. The local butchers Tormeys has an on site Himalayan salt dry cure beef ager so I bought a few sirloins. I didn't need a coffee so avoided the Esquires coffee place. Worth a visit if you are close by.

The Market Cross's main draw is Superquinn, probably the best supermarket to go to for baked goods…read more It has also got Kilkenny's only Penney's on the ground floor and Monsoon/Accessorise. There's not a huge amount of compelling shopping to be done here though. It has a small music shop (Heartbeat City), a couple of shoe shops, L'Occitane, a sports shop, a cafe, a pharmacy, newsagents, phone shop and so on. There are a few benches for sitting and it is partially covered by a glass roof. It has started to look a bit dingy though compared to the new McDonagh Junction shopping centre near the railway station.

You could also get the train down and it's a stones throw from the train station for commuters. The shops are alright for girls and upstairs in river island for lads. He courtyard has some nice coffee shops where one can sit and spend an afternoon and watch the world go by or chinwag with an old friend. The bowling ally can be expensive but if you get a leaflet which knocks of a 10er which makes it very reasonable. Overall it's ok but that's about it. It needs more shops and a drawcard shop as opposed to Dunnes which there is already one in Kilkenny Less than 1k away.

It was a cold, wet day; as I walked in I was glad that we parked somewhere else as it was darn full and the allocated space per car isn't generous despite the fact that it's pay parking. I really do detest having to pay to park to shop. The next thing that struck was just how few shops there were that I'd be interested in; for me it's a completely forgettable place. There's a Penney's, now doubt their flagship store, a Peter Mark, an overpriced Gelato place and a Nickel cafe where there's nothing that costs a nickel. So if I were standing outside it again I'd be unlikely to go back inside, I'd go somewhere else.

There isn't really much on offer for food however, with some run-of-the-mill coffee shops and a juice bar. Something I liked about Athlone Town Centre was how spacious and quiet it was - not sure if it's always like this but every time I've been here it's been really easy to get around shops comfortably. Other shopping centres can often be so busy that you end up just giving up! The Sheraton Hotel is accessible by lift from within the shopping centre itself, and if you stay there you get free parking in the hotel/centre car park (Normally 8 euro per day).

We wandered to the upstairs food court, and we opted for their sweet lunch deal of the day, with complimentary tea or coffee for a few Euros. It was a Chicken and Mushroom Vol au Vents with a pastry puff tower with a side of whatever you fancied. It was delish! Very filling and tasty! Worth a stop if you really can't decide what to eat in the area; but honestly, look around - there's more to eat than just here. There wasn't too much shopping to do, which was what I was hoping for, but in either case, it's something to check out.

They have some good places to eat in here and a good selection of merchants that are nowhere else in the city. Also close to Cruises Street shopping area so you can easily pop over after you are done.
