We are only a few months into our child's kindergarten year at Rosa Parks Elementary, and I honestly couldn't be happier with our experience so far.
Our child is enrolled in the Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program, and it has been amazing watching how quickly he's taken to learning Japanese. In just a few months, he's learned all the months of the year, can count to 30 in Japanese, and actually asks us for MORE Japanese homework.
He's progressing quickly with reading in English too. Each week they learn one or two "heart" words which my son constantly brings to my attention as he identifies the words outside of class. He gets weekly reading, writing, and math homework. The academics feel very appropriate for kindergarten, and he genuinely enjoys learning.
Our son's Sensai has been teaching for 30 years. She is warm, welcoming, enthusiastic, and clearly loves what she does. The communication with parents has been excellent and proactive, which makes such a difference when you're sending your little one off to elementary school for the first time. I get multiple communications weekly via WhatsApp, email, weekly newsletters and more. Every week they have a Coffee Chat for parents.
Beyond academics, the sense of community has been wonderful. Our son has made several friends, and we've felt incredibly welcomed as a family. One of my favorite experiences so far was Undokai, the Japanese sports day celebration. Watching the children enthusiastically participate in a fun dance and friendly competitions was absolutely adorable. It was such a fun way to bring the cultural aspect of the program to life and build community among the families. My son does chess club and we feed the garden chickens on the weekends.
Of course, we're still early in our elementary school journey, so I can't speak to the upper grades yet. But based on our experience so far, I would absolutely choose Rosa Parks again.
For families considering the Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program, I can't recommend it enough. Our son is happy, challenged in an age-appropriate way, and genuinely excited about school. read more
