I have to concur with N. C. that our fondest childhood memories were truly from this Elementary…read moreschool. We were in the very first class, entering this school, back in 1983. The school facility is well-equipped with a large library and creative play structure on the lower level. The cafeteria boasts a huge, sunlit eating area, with ample seating. However, what made this school stand out were the people within it. Everyone, from the secretary, to the librarian, teachers, principal, and custodian, were so caring and supportive to their students. The teachers did a superb job preparing their students for middle school. Of course, what I hold the dearest to my heart are my darling classmates, with whom I had the privilege to learn and grow, for 5 years. The students were so sweet, and I will forever cherish the unbreakable bond from these childhood friendships. Three cheers to the Class of 1985!!!

My wife and I transferred our children to New School when red flags from their previous school…read morebegan not only affecting their academic performance but also their emotional. We invested a lot of time and effort to find a school that could rekindle my eldest's natural curiosity and love of reading and math. My only regret is not enrolling my kids here in New School earlier. New School is everything what learning should be. The staff is genuinely enthusiastic, professional and committed to the philosophy of the CORE values of the district. The energy the staff at New School brings was the needed vibe to negate all the toxic experiences my children had to endure from their previous school. I inquire with my children each day as to how their day goes at New School. As a parent who only wants the best for my children, I am grateful for them to have been gained so much in the short time they have been enrolled. Recently, my son told me, "Dad! I understand Algebra now!" The excitement in his voice could had never been heard from during his time in his old school. I asked him, "What do you like about your new school?" He replied, "My teacher is very clear in explaining the material. They just don't give out work and tell us to figure it out without teaching us. Also, the lessons (his teacher) hands to us gives me the chance to be creative, And, I don't have to be afraid anymore when I ask a question. My old school would yell at me a lot." I truly believe the early experiences children gain influence not only their ability to learn, but also how they value themselves and others which are key components in creating that lifelong relationship with higher education. I cannot speak enough of how great New School is. I wish all schools could model their program.

The school is high-performing. The curriculum is rigorous and thoughtful. Many of the field trips have been service projects, like serving a meal at Glide or removing invasive plants from Chrissy Field, which is wonderful for building character. They do a one-night camping trip in 7th grade. They hold all-school events that celebrate different cultures. There's an annual middle-school dance and class parties. They walk to Joe DiMaggio Park for PE three times a week. They have middle school sports teams. Conflict among the kids seems minimal. There's a good emphasis on equity. Downsides: The electives are limited because the school is small. They have a cafeteria that can be used as a community space, but no separate gym, and the yard is small. The commute from across town is tough, but we have a good carpool going. These downsides are outweighed by the fact that our child gets an excellent academic education in a friendly, safe, and professional environment. Public middle school in SF is tough, and we're very happy to be here.

Teachers work collaboratively to support student learning through project-based learning, and technology. This fall the school will be celebrating it's 100th year of service to the community and will recognize partnerships with several private businesses and non-profit organizations that have partnered with the school to provide enrichment programs at the school. Apparently, my parents selected Washington and Wallenberg as the preferred schools for me to continue my education. Since i didn't get my school of choice coming out of Elementary school (Marina being #1 choice) I expected to at least get my selection this time. Wrong. I was assigned to Galileo, at the time a school known for students and their shenanigans, suspected gangs roaming within the school, and not really recognized for any type of academic achievement. Day 1 of Galileo went without a hitch. As I suspected, I attended a school with a vastly dominated Asian population with groups of other minorities spread out among the student body. This is typically the basic make up of a SFUSD public school, with at least 2000 students attending this school. When I first attended in 2004, the school was somewhat showing signs of wear an tear but when I graduated in 2008, they made significant improvements and remodeled certain aspects of the building. A new artificial turf football field was installed, there is better accessibility around the school for physically impaired people, and they completely changed the courtyard. Course wise they offer classes that you'd expect to see at other schools from your basic science courses to honors courses to AP courses. They had good teachers while I was there an generally it wasn't too challenging for me as High School should be rather easy seeing as how you can easily graduate by doing the minimum and maintaining C's as getting an F really requires work and dedication to failing. Being called Galileo Academy, you are also able to choose to enroll in a 2 year program such AOIT, The Health Academy, a Hospitality program, and others such as the four year AVID program. I was in both the Health Academy and AVID as one helped learn some basic EMT techniques, which counted as 9.5 college units, and AVID meant to help prepare you for college and assisting in the application process. All the teachers i had class with were nice, helpful and of course there's always a couple who make it interesting. Galileo also has a tradition in Sports being the most winning full football program in SF and excelling in a couple of other sports. Sports are a must to gain a good high school experience and the school staff such as counselors were all very helpful. By the time I graduated, Galileo was on it's way up rivaling Lowell and Washington in Academics. This school is also located right by the Pier for an excellent experience during lunch (or if you decide to skip out on class). With so much around, it's tough going to school everyday. Yet It is a school worth attending and will leave you with a good High School Experience. Any other school in SF is a joke. G-House is the place to be.

The teachers + support staff are wonderful, they really give time and attention to the full student experience. Our kiddo had trouble transitioning to school-made lunch, so we worked with the teachers and staff to develop a food plan. We've also been invited to a number of school activities for kids + parents (and a few parent-only) and I love the community we're building. Garfield was recently fully renovated from the ground up, so even though it's proudly one of the oldest schools in SFUSD, it's also one of the schools with the newest infrastructure. Also? My kiddo tells everyone he basically goes to school at Coit Tower (and he's not wrong). For anyone worried about the hill: there's a VERY easy drop off and pick up process and the staff keeps it going, so much easier than the other two schools where we had to deal with odd parking/drop off and pick up situations!
