    First Round-up - 1931
    Val Y.

Roosevelt High School Class of '66. If you wen go Roosevelt High School you wen go intermediate school at e-da Stevenson oh-ah Kawananakoa. I wen go Kawananakoa Intermediate School fo tree yee-ahs. Wen I was in da eighth grade I believe I was da 64th bull of da school. I would have been da 60th bull of da school but day-ah was tree titas from Papakolea dat could scrap dat I neva like fight. Wat? Wat? My friend John was da No. 1 bull of da school. He was one bad ass 17 yea old wen he was in da 8th grade. I used to do all his homework an help him cheat on da exams. Eva-ree-bah-day was scad of John. I was one weak, skinny punk dat was one blue belt in judo back den an eva-ree-bah-day was scad of me wen I was wid John. I was so happy wen I wen learn I was goin Roosevelt afta Kawananakoa. I wen join one YBA club called da Skyliners an all my friends in da club wen Roosevelt. An as fo my friend John, wen I was one jun-ya I hurd he wen go prison. Roosevelt is a school with a long history. The school was established in 1930 and was named after the 25th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. That's why Roosevelt is also known as the Rough Riders. Check this out! I found the first Round-Up for Roosevelt High School at the swap meet. Round-Up is the name of the yearbook for Roosevelt High School. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/roosevelt-high-school-honolulu?select=07Nuer1PLWDRg_wQVwvS6Q#07Nuer1PLWDRg_wQVwvS6Q The first principal of the school was Clyde Crawford. Roosevelt was an English Standard School back then. Notice how my English got better as soon as I started attending Roosevelt. When I went to Roosevelt the principal of the school was Wilfred Wong but the enforcer of the school was the Boy's PE teacher and football coach Edmond "Ticky" Vasconcellos. Ticky Vasconcellos was a legend back then. Coach Vasconcellos led the Rough Riders to three straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles from 1955 to 1957. His "Boom Boom" series was an unstoppable running attack back then. Roosevelt High School had some really bad ass duds that played football. Even Hawaii underworld kingpin Wilford (Nappy) Pulawa and hitman Roy Ryder (both were RHS grads) were afraid of Coach Vasconcellos. I was so scared of Mr. Vasconcellos. Everyone would shake and cry when he said "BEND OVER!" He had this big paddle in the back of his desk and "KATOOG"; if the principal sent you to Mr. Vasconcellos ...BAM!!! ...you wouldn't be able to sit on your ass for a week. Today the Roosevelt High football stadium is now the Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Roosevelt had some great football players: Dante Carpenter, Arthur Hoke, Larry Price, Glenn Shea, Howard Leslie, Mike Lum, Warner Wong and Chad Owens were all Rough Riders. Some things I remember about Roosevelt: I hated PE. We had to shower naked and my friends and I would snap wet towels at each others dicks. OW!!!! I wonder if the girls did the same thing in their shower? Mr. Inaba was my Electronics teacher and I loved his class. We would shoot craps during lunch break outside his class. One time we got caught and WHAM ...we all couldn't sit on our ass for a week. I still remember the day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. It was the day all the guys ran to the ROTC room and started cleaning the M-I rifles; and all the girls ran to the bathroom to cry and smoke. I remember that the lunches sucked at Roosevelt. I remember that my chemistry teacher, Mrs.Teruya was my favorite teacher. I remember that Miss Okubo was the most hated teacher in school. Turns out she was really nice and sweet in person. I met her a few years after I graduated from RHS. I remember that "Mr. Aloha", Danny Kaliikini was a RHS alumni. Surfing legend Eddie Aikau went to RHS. I remember that the most infamous person that ever graduated from Roosevelt was the Xerox shooter Byran U. High school was an important part of my life. I am so proud to be a Roosevelt Rough Rider.....all hail, hail, hail!!!

I was here for the graduation ceremony last night. Their football field is really nice. The stadium and track is one of the best on the island. They have football games, track and field, and other events at this location. I know several companies rented out this site and filmed their commercials here.

Roosevelt HS The updated football field looks good. Many different high school teams do play on this field that aren't even from this school. So it is good to have a field that parents and school mates can watch a game that they would not be able to watch otherwise. Even thought it really is just stone blocks- there is plenty of room to bring in bleacher seats or couch cushions and umbrellas when needed. It is open open air. I am surprised that the caf is so small. There are so many students but I understand that different students get to eat outside- so it is functional and understandable. Different non-profits and sports teams like karate practice in the caf... so it is sometimes open to different organizations. There are smaller indoor gyms. They have cheer-leading and volleyball games events. In the one gym, it is really weird to go to the bathroom that it is really odd. Otherwise- it is normal to have good gyms that are used really well for practice and events. The classrooms are normal. The library is normal. There are different rooms and halls and it does look and feel like a normal high school. Parking though is a pain in the butt. With all the hills and side residential streets - it is hard to find good parking for events like games or other things that are popular.

Seriously, why are high schools on here? Roosevelt was great, was very laid back and casual, but this was many moons ago.

Gym facility could use some repairs. The school is huge and the football field is one of the better playing spots for a public school.

Excellent win for Iolani taking all 3 divisions in first place: intermediate, JV and varsity. Love the comraderie of the audience sitting side by side with families of competing schools. The coolest thing was while waiting for the tallying of each school's points, the cheerleaders were in good spirits dancing on the floor to the music. So much aloha encompassed the gym. Smiles, hugs, leis of all kinds and roses being handed out to teammates and friends. A wonderful spectacle to witness and enjoy.

Disclaimer: this is a review of the tennis facility. I have played and coached many matches at this…read moreschool and it has a very impressive tennis complex. In the years since I was competing, they renovated the office/viewing area to include an upper deck. There are 6 courts with lights on the lower side and up a steep road there are 3 more courts. There is also a bleacher area to watch some of the matches from. Parking can be tricky and the one-way setup of the lot is difficult. If you pass an area, you have to go all the way out of the campus and back around the hill to get back on property. If you see a spot, even if it's not that close, take it! Weather is also an issue since it's in Manoa so we sometimes have rain delays/cancelled matches. Yesterday we almost had to postpone but luckily the weather held up enough to finish the match!

One of the school's greatest strengths is its size. The student-to-teacher ratio feels just right--small enough for individualized attention, but large enough to offer a well-rounded experience. I've seen my child both supported when he needs help and challenged to grow academically, which is exactly what we hoped for. Equally important has been the social environment. He has built a strong, close-knit group of friends who I truly believe will remain an important part of his life well beyond school. That sense of belonging and community was something we deeply valued when choosing a school, and it's a big reason he never felt the need to look elsewhere. Like any school, it's not perfect. At times, administrative decisions can take longer than expected. However, I've come to see this as a reflection of the school's thoughtful and compassionate approach--they take the time to carefully consider situations and prioritize what's best for their students rather than rushing to judgment. Overall, we're grateful to be part of a school community that nurtures both academic growth and meaningful relationships. It has been a great fit for our child, and we look forward to the years ahead.

It's not clear what is the purpose of these school reviews. As a parent of a high school student…read moresome of the topics are irrelevant. Reviewing a craft fair seems more like it belongs in a community activities brochure - it's an event that takes place on campus but it's not really a school program for students or teachers. Kinda the same opinion re whether reviewing a carnival on campus is helpful. Also, note that some reviews refer to classes offered by the Adult Education Program on campus - after hours for a fee. Yes these are classes held on the KHS campus but it's misleading to suggest that classes like Thai Cooking are a curriculum choice for students. Mahalo to those who noted the dedicated teachers. Yes the school buildings are old and bathrooms can be pretty bad. The school isn't given funds for landscaping, full time gardeners, or upscale interior designers. There are custodians whose daily tasks are basic maintenance. Getting necessary repairs can be a bureaucratic nightmare BUT maintaining a safe and functional appearance is the responsibility of the occupants, the students and teachers.

Kaimuki High School is home to one of the largest craft fair and oh I've never got the chance to check them out as I'm always working and since I'm on the tail end of my vacation time...my boss gave the the few extra days which I'm just so grateful as it got me a chance to give this place a visit. Pretty much overtaking majority of the school as you can find vendors down each hall though all are outdoor setting the slight shade does help as it still gets crazy hot in the afternoon. Very impressed of the variety they have here the parking does get challenging if you don't go early enough though since we went on the last few hours I did manage to get a parking as the early birds left. Me and my bestie hit the ground and tried to check off our gift list we manage to find items for ourselves as well loving all the fun and cute items they have. As we got hungry there was a few food trucks which is a nice convenience as well but what a wonderful place to get a lot of your shopping done and hope that I can do this again as it was a fun experience. Thank you!

What would life be without music…read more.. Attended McKinley High School Band Booster Christmas Craft Fair and was pretty impressed how it was all organized. Surely you got all the kids out waving the cars down to check out and support and with the parking that's right besides their cafeteria which is where majority of the vendors are held makes it a great venue to hold such an event. As I shopped and scanned various craft items you have the band playing Christmas music right outside while selling bentos and waving signs to alert you about more vendors across in the gym and outside on the lanai. It was a very lively and fun morning to shop and browse that I even bought a Christmas decor made by the Robotic Club, it's a wire swirled up to shape a Christmas tree which was wrapped up in tiny multi-colored lights that with a click on the switch will change to various modes it even included a spare and I was able to buy another spare so that I'm all set for the holidays with this stunning piece of art that will go to a wonderful cause. Keep dreaming and do what you love... Thank you!
