Cute ranch with great staff! The horses were all well taken care of and well behaved. We had a large group so we had 3 amazing tour guides with us on our 1 hour ride. There's not a dull moment on the ride, lots of hills and trees to maneuver through. We even got to see some deer up close and personal. Just went for a ride here with my 9 year old daughter. We are both intermediate riders and were not bothered by the fact that you are left to ride by yourself for portions of the ride as you are passed off between guides. However, I can see how that would be really scary for inexperienced riders, and potentially a safety issue if anything went wrong. Our guides were young, some friendlier than others. I did notice one vaping on our ride which seemed a little weird and unprofessional. Our favorite part was the section at the top of the hill where you are able to get a little speed on the horse (assuming they feel like cooperating). This feels more like a 3.5 star experience because of the experience with the guides, but given there are limited options for trail rides, I'll probably be back! read more

Great horses and staff. We rode a lot over a month in preparation for a dude ranch trip and it worked like a charm. I rode a different horse 2x week and every one of them was amazing. They can accommodate any level of rider and the guides are so nice and very patient. Highly recommend! read more

SERVICE: I will admit that those writing about guides splitting the time of route is true. Not sure if I don't care or feel it's a concern for safety or lack of conversation/history. All to say I understand both sides. Because I have risen before, it was fine but could see how a beginner such as my niece was freaking out at first. It too is true the first rider will literally take the lead. However, it's also obvious the horses know where they're going as the guide rides in the back on the last horse to keep an eye on everyone. I would prefer something with less hills, but Pgh is nothing but hills lol. I also agree with some reviews that the horses tend to rest a bit, but in our cause it was really hot and I'm sure they were tired. It is what it is. Staff were polite and helpful. Parking was easy down below. We even ran late and had to change our reservation which was awesome they could accommodate, so I appreciate that. WELL: Sure, I'd return. read more

My wife and I had not been horseback riding for years so we were a little nervous. We arrived a little early and were greeted by Patty the owner she was so friendly, kind and funny and put us right at ease. We had two great horses and a wonderful guide, we had so much fun. First time here.. had a later appointment. because I had never rode before, they gave me a really old horse that couldn't breathe, poor thing was terribly exhausted., I felt so bad for him (15 yrs old) like I was generally very upset. My whole ride I felt like a fat seal killing the horse. He was wayyy too tired to even walk. It was a hot day, and my tour guide was a younger girl teenager that was so incredibly rude. Chilled on her phone and was acting like we were all an incredible burden to her day. She's my inspiration for this review. I asked questions because she wouldn't talk to anyone, and if she answered, it was one worded answers in an off putting tone. Horrrrrible guide. The horses were good boys and all very sweet. They knew their route. The main lady was nice, got to the point. The horses had to walk a good bit in 2 feet of mud, even up hill. I thought they were going to break a leg and we'd fall, hearing my poor horse gasp for air while trailing us through it (I'm like 145 lbs) was heartbreaking ! I wanted to jump off of him and carry him up the hill! But outside of that, and the rude, bratty tour guide -it was a nice time. I was happy to be done. Had it been a better guide and a healthier horse (I loved that sweet horse, poor boy), my review would be a little different. read more

I have been riding horses from a very young age. No longer having horses in the family, I have had to find opportunities to ride. I have since shared my love of horses with my granddaughter, who also loves to ride. I never knew that Rolling Hills Ranch, was so close to home. We brought our granddaughters to ride one Sunday morning as a birthday gift. It was a wonderful day !! The trail ride is only $25 a person for an hour ride. No worries they have beginner, intermediate and advanced horses that will treat you so well. It is a lead horse trail, that winds through a very interesting and safe wood area. The end to the trail is a nice level landing above the woods. A short rest is given for you and the horses. The ride back to the barn was just as exciting as the ride to the landing. We all had a great time. The staff is very friendly and accommodating to your needs. The barn is clean and the horses are so beautiful and kept in loving care. Rolling Hills Ranch offers a moonlight ride for adults, my granddaughters would have loved it, but not adults yet, maybe someday. Reservations are required for this ride. It is a sunset ride for an hour and a half, included in the ride is a campfire and catered dinner. What I found nice about this offer is it is BYOB! Excellent experience! Went here for the moonlight ride. Myself and my girlfriend don't have any riding experience, but the staff was very helpful and within 2 minutes on my horse (Donald), I felt very comfortable and in control. The horses pretty much know what to do themselves and theirs little need for much control. Our ride lasted a little over an hour, which took us through a few individual trails that were illuminated by tiki torches and the stars. After returning, you take a hayride to the fire and dinner. The food was pretty good, no complaints. Everyone stayed in their individual groups (wether it be 4+ or just couples) which let you maintain some bit of privacy and intimacy. We really enjoyed it. We will probably try out the day rides here as well! read more

Myself and two others went in for a reserved morning ride. It's advertised as a guided trail ride, so that's what we were expecting. Getting started and set off went good, the horses clearly knew where they were going. Unfortunately, our guide was not the greatest. He didn't seem super friendly, which is fine, but he also was smoking while riding. The latter half of the trail, he ditched us to chat with another guide with a group behind us, and just told us to go through the trees and take a right. There were many more than just a fork in the woods and we were worried we may have gotten turned around, as the horses were trying to go different ways. The guide never caught up to us, but we eventually made it out and back to the main ranch area. All of this would've been okay, except when we got back, the man who took our horses was extremely rude. We tried to discuss how it seemed unprofessional of our guide to leave us with minimal instruction and expressed our concern for ourselves (two beginners and one experienced rider) and the animals, but the employee was dismissive and defensive. Ultimately, not a good experience, and if you know horses or are nervous about riding, steer clear. Edit: Was able to get in contact with a manager over the phone, who reassured us and offered to send us gift certificates for another ride, with a different trail guide. read more

Excellent experience! I highly recommend Rolling Hills Ranch to everyone! My bf and I decided to come here to kick off our Memorial Day. He used to own a horse and i thought it would be a great date. The trail ride was $25/person. The ride lasts an hour. You get to choose the level of horse you'd like-- beginner, intermediate and advanced. I went with beginner and he went with intermediate. Helmets are optional (I decided to wear one, lol) The trail began with one of the workers on a horse leading us. We went deep into the woods and ended at a nice landing where the horses were able to take a 5-10 minute break. Afterwards the guide let us go off on our own, on the same trail that we began on. This was fun and adventurous! Bobby rode Mr. T who had an amazing spirit. My beginner's horse was Jake. While he was great for beginners, he was a little slower. The instructor informed us that the horses had a long weekend of rides and were a little tired. Jake was sweet, but I am probably able to do an intermediate horse next time. (choose Jake for kids. He was great!) Rolling Hills Ranch also offers a moonlight ride. Reservations are required. You ride into the sunset for an hour and a half. You end at a campfire and catered dinner. The moonlight ride is 21+ since it is BYOB! This seems like a great date or even a great girls day with friends. Again I highly recommend this ranch. The trails, scenery and horses were beautiful. read more

I think this is a fantastic place and am so happy that there's somewhere close for me to go when I want to go horseback riding! Rolling Hills is a very appropriate barn for anyone looking to go on some laid back trail rides. Riders of all levels will do just fine here (for reference, I took English-style horseback riding lessons for about seven or eight years). When I came here for a ride they gave me a "difficult" horse due to my experience level, and we got along great. Lesson being that even the "difficult" horses are really mellow by normal standards, hence why I say that casual and advanced riders alike will be fine. The hardest decision you'll have to make is whether to go during the day or go for a night ride horses. Day riders have much better views of the hilly and wooded area and may even be able to work in a trot or canter since they have a clear view of the trail in front of them. If you go for an evening "Moonlite" ride (which, I want to note, you need to schedule in advance), you'll get to enjoy a great atmosphere and a walk along wood trails lit by tikki torches. Moonlite riders also get an amazing BBQ fireside dinner afterward (I want the recipe for the tender ribs that were served, they were amazing!). A couple things keep me from giving this place 5 stars. The staff sometimes smoke during the rides, which ruins the fresh air smell in the woods and meadows; I didn't feel comfortable asking them to stop, unfortunately. But all the staff would have to do is NOT ride directly in front of everyone else when they light up! So this is a major drawback for me, as I'm hyper-sensitive to cigarette smoke. I'm also not sure why they told me to show up at 8:00 to my evening ride when I made my ride reservation; we didn't even begin mounting the horses until 8:45 or 9:00, so I stood around awkwardly for almost an hour waiting for the rest of the people to show up. On that note, one more thing: bring a friend to the Moolite Rides if you're single like I am. This is apparently unofficially a couples activity, and as a result I was alone in a giant group of couples. Don't get me wrong, my ride was fantastic and I'd come back again, but there's still a little room for improvement here, I think. read more

These people don't seem to know anything about horses. I will say that they do seem to care about the animals and are just ignorant. They treated my family well and the kids had a great time. It was harder for me to enjoy myself knowing that all the horses we were riding had worms and had never had a bath. With better staff training and a small investment for better horse care, this place could be incredible. read more

I've been horse back riding to quite a few places and Rolling Hills is by far my favorite! They cater to all experience levels and ages. The guides that take you along are super friendly and share a lot of information they have about any of the horses or ranch that you want to know. What I enjoy most about this place compared to others is that you are given a real chance to ride instead of just following single file in a flat pattern like other places do. There a different trails and hills to climb and you are even given a chance to run the horses if you so like. Definitely will be continuing to return! read more

Beautiful trail at RHR but there was not 1 consistent guide throughout our ride, so no conversation or info about the trail, etc. I was there w my 10 year old nice who has little riding experience. At one point, we were told to just go "up the hill" on our own. The guide at the top of the very long and steep hill informed me we should never have been left on our own but they were short staffed. I was unhappy with that from a safety perspective. read more

We took our niece to Rolling Hills Ranch for a 3rd birthday adventure and they were great! She is obsessed with Spirit (the horse the show) so we wanted to take her to see real horses. We knew she couldn't ride on her own, but the staff at the ranch were great!! They let her ride in a circle on one if the horses and she loved it!! I go here about every two weeks since I came here for college. My horseback riding experience is limited due to me not being able to take lessons, but I do know the rough basics and we always have our friend who is an advanced rider with us if we do have any trouble. Our crew got a Frequent Rider's card when we first came and we've been using it ever since. We actually are almost at a free ride! When I first came here I was put on Pepper who was a lovely horse and he was very spirited. But he must be getting older due to his lag in getting up the hill in a timely manner. The second time I came I rode back to the barn after getting him up to the top of the hill because he seemed very worn out. I asked for a new horse and they put me on Jerry. I believe Sean was his name and he said "You'll like Jerry" and gave me a smug smile. Jerry was VERY spirited. He bolted up the hill like he hadn't been out all day and ran past all the other horses. I absolutely fell in love with him. After a few times riding we all got put on new horses due to all of ours being out, and I came in contact with Forbes. He's my new favorite since they shipped out Jerry on our last adventure there. Forbes is a large boy who has a great spirit and loving temperament. Sometimes he can be stubborn but he is a great companion to ride with. Any level of riding can come here and feel comfortable on their horse. They will gladly give you the horse you rode last if you request them. The staff is very nice and if you are knowledgeable with the trails, you can go out on your own but staff is out there when you need them. Sometimes your group will be added with one or two stray riders who just want to ride with friendly faces which we've done before and each person was pretty nice. Though I do agree with Larissa G. when it comes to the staff smoking on the job. It would be great if they did it while riding back or in between groups.The horses are VERY well cared for, aside from sometimes I've noticed they've had matted manes or tails due to bristles getting caught. I'll take the time while we're mounting to pull some of them out. There is a great amount of space for parking and the cost of only $25 is an AMAZING deal for the freedom you get with the horses. This is the only public riding stable that I have found that is great with the horses, great with the customers, and has a BEAUTIFUL view of the land. Any pictures you take here will be great especially at the top of the hill. We have had many great times here and would come back every day if I could. We've wanted to come to a Moonlite Ride but were unable to due to availability. I wish that there was more days for students like my group who are breaking the 21 age group but not quite there yet. I've heard the Moonlite Rides are to die for. I couldn't give more of a great review if I wanted to but I hope this review comes in handy for anyone looking for a great ride on a great budget! **Update**: MAKE SURE YOU SECURE ALL YOUR ITEMS YOU CARRY WITH YOU WHILE RIDING! It is almost guaranteed that you will lose something. I actually bring a small pack that I clip onto my belt loop with a zipper to put all my valuables in, including my phone so I'm able to take pictures along the ride. Putting things in your back pocket is a bad idea, same with your breast pocket. The best pocket to put something in would probably be your front pockets seeing as you can feel them more and see them if you just glance down quickly to make sure its still there. We've lost cell phones, money, a wallet, and such but were able to recover almost everything when we went back to look for it. And the staff will allow you to go and look for your belongings as needed. read more

This was so fun!!! It was my first time riding a horse in years. The place was easy to find and there is plenty of free parking. It costs $25 to ride for an hour (cute riding helmet included!). The first staff member I met (a.k.a guy with the short blond ponytail) was so nice! He was really friendly and helpful, as were the other staffers, and riders! My horse Gus was friendly and calm. Three lady friends and I went on the moonlite ride last Friday and we had a fun-filled evening. The staff were friendly and funny and I even garnered a new nickname from T-Payne (Shawn, Sean? cannot remember his real name)--PJenks. The moonlight ride was surreal and beautiful and magical and I cannot recommend it enough. In terms of an earlier review, there were only 2 couples on our ride. All the rest appeared to be groups of friends--largely ladies, like my own lil gaggle. Come with a pal if you are single and introverted or shy, and come alone if you are gregarious and social and want to meet cute ladies. The ride begins at 9 and it is a 90 minute ride, so it is long-ish, but it goes fast. You do not need experience to do this ride and no special gear required. You can use one of their riding hats for safety, or you can forego it and sign a waiver. I wanted to look sporting and official, so I wore a velvet cap! There is a ceremonial "release of the horses" where they go to pasture post-ride, a wonderful, photo and video moment if you're into that kind of thing, and a hayride over to the adorable little shire they have set up for the barbeque. There is yummy food, a bonfire, picnic tables, tiki torches, and amusing staff who cracked me the hell up. The staff did smoke cigars the ride. I love cigars so I took no issue with this. My heart went pitter patter every time I saw a staff member running a horse in the dark distance across a field or up a hill. I kept whispering to Captain that I was ready to run whenever he was. I'm clearly one of those nerdy girls who had her nose stuck in a book about a horse growing up. I would love to return here to really learn to ride. read more

So, both types of reviews are true in the sense that, yes, they treat the horses like working animals -- they are given 20 minutes in between riders, but I could tell they were tired and not feeling it and they had to give rides anyway. Also, there is no instruction, nor are you led by a guide. There are young guys on horses that ride around to monitor the route and can help if your horse stops, but that is about it. Also it is mostly open fields. I can see why people who are not "horse people" or experienced with horses would have a great time; they were super busy, and I see on here that a lot of people enjoyed it. But if you are a true horse lover, or expect more connection with nature or even some instruction or a guide, this isn't the place. I egret not listening to others because I felt kind of depressed about it when I was done -- I felt like the horse wasn't into it at all and that made me feel bad. But I need to take lessons if I really want to have that connection -- they don't have lessons here. read more

My family went there for a fun thing to do on the weekend, we have been horseback riding multiple times in different states, and in Costa Rica, and this was by far the worst experience. When we got there we checked in good, and the main lady was nice, they gave us beginner/intermediate horses. The people who gave us our horses didn't know or tell us the names of our horses. We started off with this very nice young woman who was talking to us and being very friendly, my family really liked our experience with her, she had medium length brown hair in a bun. But the group ahead of us had very skidish horses, I don't know why they had those horses because they had clearly expressed that they were very scared and first time riders (I felt bad that they were given such skidish horses especially for being first time riders). The guide we had previously switched off with another guide so that she could guide this group back. I believe our new guides name was Dakota (he had blonde hair that was slightly long). I did not like him, he introduced himself and then trotted ahead, when he thought we were going to slow he would yell to kick our horses. I understand you have to kick the horse sometimes but he was so impatient that when my horse was drinking water he was yelling at me to kick it. He was constantly on his phone and could care less. We wished that we still had our old guide because she was wonderful. When we got into the woods he left and we were on our own which I genuinely appreciated because his attitude was just getting to be too much. He said to keep to the left but the trails were very poorly marked and were not explained well. The horses did not follow commands and would stop whenever you tried to steer them a different way. They also never trotted and would get upset when being steered. The horses will go the way they want to go and that's that. I felt bad for the horses though because I don't believe they were treated super well, but they were overall nice horses. The difficulty of the horse does not mean it will trot more, it just means that it has a harder time following directions and is more dangerous, especially when you are on a trail by yourself and the horse won't move. The ride that was supposed to last a minimum of 1 hour only lasted 35 minutes. Not worth your money and it's a ripoff. I recommend really doing your research and hopefully you can find a better place to horseback ride. read more

I actually went here in August 2016. I was just remembering the experience I had here. Hopefully it has changed. I went on a trail ride with a group, and didn't feel safe. (I have riding experience in different styles from several different places but am not a riding snob or over-concerned with safety.) There was no instruction before or during the ride unless people asked, even though most of the group were beginners. So the horses ended up right on top of each other most of the time, which caused them to bite and kick each other, and riders screamed. (To me this could also cause a horse to buck or rear eventually.) The guides pushed our group to go faster. A guide fell off a few minutes into our ride in the forest. They allowed guests to ride without helmets, but that at least is the rider's choice. That's just what my experience was like. Hopefully that was an off day. I really don't want to post a bad review but it felt wrong not to share this. read more
