History
Established in 1984.
In 1984 Rodney Burns started Rods Machine Shop to serve the smaller businesses and individuals who needed machine and welding work done, due to him being forced to turn those people away at all the other shops he worked for. Rod ran this successful and growing business throughout the years he owned it and during that time also dabbled in metal sales, In 2003 he sold the Machine Shop and it's assets less the material, to me..his son..Melvin Burns, at which time he started Metals R Us and continued to grow the material sales business which also focuses on serving the smaller needs clientele. Rods Machine Shop has grown to serve and have a good name in the local construction businesses, local people and some of the largest recycling companies in Nova Scotia, we do many types of jobs for many types of clients, and still concentrate on serving all the little needs of our local community. We focus on delivering what our customer wants, and no less. We are also proud supporters of youth.
Meet the Business Owner: Melvin B.
I started working in Rods Machine Shop at a very young age, about 7...I started in the shop cleaning machines, collecting chips from lathes, and sweeping the floor, over the years my duties and abilities increased. I enjoyed the shop and it's people..my teachers, and spent as much time as I could weekends and summers working there, I spent my youth running errands in Burnside on a bicycle, to W & A Moirs, Doall etc..and working in the shop. I got to know a lot of people in the trades around here at a very young age, many of those customers I still deal with today and many have retired and even past since those days..I left school as early as I could, with my mother being a teacher it was difficult, however my grade 10 principal helped me out by expelling me and I have been working in since then, I left for Alberta and was foreman in a machine shop there for a year at 19, I then returned to assist in the start up of Metals r us, and bought Rods Machine Shop shortly after.
