Mr. R with the kids after belt testing
Sarah D.

My 7 year old and 9 year old both take Tae Kwon Do lessons at Rodness Martial Arts. Mr. Rodness is highly skilled in the disciplines he instructs, great with the kids, patiently teaches, keeps each class paced well, and refreshes each session with new ideas and activities. Belt testing is offered either every two months or quarterly and kids earn tips on their belts when they attend. He clearly values each child as an individual and gives personalized attention to each. He always ties in positive conversations with kids about how they can apply concepts of both in Tae Kwon Do or BJJ and at home (respect for parents, being kind to siblings, etc.). I love that our monthly tuition includes up to 3 sessions per week, we generally go twice a week, but sometimes we're there three times per week. My youngest (3 and a half) insists on staying and watching her older brothers practice- she can't wait to be part of the little dragons when she turns 4 in the summer. The schedule is super consistent each week, month and year which is also a huge plus for us as a busy family. It's available on the website https://rodnessmartialarts.com/schedule and kept up to date so we never have to worry about last minute changes or keeping track of anything. My 9 year old takes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) here which is convenient because he stays to take the class right after TKD. Mr. R is an extremely effective instructor in this discipline as well. The belt tests for both BJJ and TKD are both challenging and fun for the kids, they really look forward to it when it is time for belt testing and feel very proud when they earn their way to the next level. My kids add: "Mr. R is really nice, teaches us cool kicks, and teaches us how to tie our belts. He taught me how to even make a cool snap sound with my belt when I tie it" -(7 year old) "He's really kind and challenges me to be my best. I also like that he doesn't push me past my limit if I'm feeling frustrated and lets me take breaks if I need them." -(9 year old) Best way to get ahold of Mr. R is to email or drop into the studio between classes. I believe there are sign ups on the website as well, but if you contact him directly you can schedule a trial class. He offers special rates for siblings and often runs specials for sign ups. We've found the tuition reasonable compared to other studios in the area, especially considering the reliability of the schedule and value of the instruction. Our kids have greatly improved their flexibility, strength, and technique- we are very pleased.

Students holding position so Mr. R can check that everyone has it right.

As a high-ranking black belt Certified Taekwondo Instructor who taught Taekwondo for many years…read more(15+) with Mr. Hamlet, I would not take my child there. Over the years he treated people with great disrespect including the entire Instructor staff which is why we all left! It's one thing to have discipline running a tight ship and it's quite another to act like a complete horse's.... yelling at children! As an instructor I was always able to get the kids attention and elicit good behavior without screaming at them. I'm not sure if he has changed. Talk about someone who doesn't practice what they preach. Your rank or degree means nothing, absolutely zero unless you actually walk the walk in your daily life. Lead by example if you do anything right. Everyone is used to learning by following someone else, but sometimes we can learn what not to do or how not to act by observing an individual. This is one of those times...... I vividly remember a time when he was practicing for his 7th Degree black belt test. We were free sparring punching and kicking each other and I hurt his little finger as he tried to block my round kick to his head. He immediately stopped fighting and screamed at me for 30 minutes, saying I ruined his chances to test, pacing up and down the floor like a spoiled child. I remember thinking... why? would a Taekwondo master whine about a little injury. I would love to see him compete in a real full contact environment; this might be why he was knocked out before when he tried kickboxing. Overall great technician with flashy techniques, but a lousy businessman and living example. He is without a doubt the most egotistical and self-absorbed man I know. Hopefully, he has calmed down a bit and is actually paying his staff if he has anyone willing to work with him. Last time I checked we lived in America not communist China!

They will catch you if you're acting up, or if you're not doing the form right. Most places can't control such a huge class. So i definitely give kudos to them. Also they do things with the kids outside of the classes. Just 2wks ago they had fun day. Parents paid $25 for each child & the kids had a fun play day with the instructors including snacks & goodies. Our daughter had a blast with them & got to meet a lot of other kids outside of class. The biggest thing we love about this place is how Mr. Hamlet teaches the kids self discipline, & respect for adults and he doesn't show mercy to those that don't following the rules. :)

Our son has been attending for a little over a month and Respect, self control, discipline and self confidence, are some of the things our son has started to learn and demonstrate all due to what he is learning at Revolution Martial Arts. Mr. Brantley has control over the class, he is great with the kids, challenges them and encourages them. Kids show respect and greet before stepping on the matt to begin class. The facility is spacious and clean. We are very happy and know that Revolution Martial Arts is the right place for our kids to start their martial arts training.

Taekwondo is the way of the hand and the foot yet the lessons he taught myself and others stuck with us much deeper than just that. He instills honor, respect, integrity and perseverance in all of his students which in turn made all of us better human beings than skilled self defense students. Mr . Brantley is a great Taekwondo instructor but a better character teacher, there is none. So I'll say that to say this. Try out a class for any age and see for yourself. If it's for a short time or for years like it was for myself and many others, the lifetime experience you'll gain won't disappoint anyone.

My son is always excited to go to class and since transferring to Na has shown a new excitement and passion for martial arts. All the teachers are great and show a great deal of patience with the kids. Teacher Daniel is an awesome teacher and always does drills that are fun but there is usually a clever listening drill that accompanies the physical drills. All the teachers are great and are capable of running the entire class on their own. They all show a great level of expertise, excitement and confidence. He identified key characteristics of all third places. "They are on neutral ground and promote social equity by leveling the status of guests. Conversation is the main activity and the mood is playful. Strangers are welcome, and there are regulars who feel a piece of themselves is rooted in the space. They enjoy the same feelings of warmth, possession, and belonging as they would in their own homes." I know this is seriously corny, but William Kim's Tae Kwon Do Center is the best Third Place for families. You truly feel a sense of community when you are there. All the instructors are so good with the kids. I have personally seen how beneficial Tae Kwon Do is through my own 9-year old (who started in 2023 at 7). He has blossomed due in large part to Tae Kwon Do. Because I attend almost all of my son's classes, I've also witnessed so many other students excel. These kids learn discipline, respect, perseverance and many more valuable social and emotional skills. And even though the students are training hard during class, the classes are actually really fun! Even for parents just sitting and watching. In addition to being a great place for your kids, as a parent, you might find yourself connecting with other local parents who may even become close friends and trusted associates. Families have been sending their kids to William Kim's TKD for decades and for good reason. The center has deep roots in the Vallejo community. Third places like William Kim's are successful because of the people who volunteer and work there--especially the Kim family--who are committed to improving each students well being through the discipline of the art of Tae Kwon Do. Families continue to flock here because they can see and feel this commitment. Also there are not many places you can go to like this, where you see different generations, from gen alpha to millennial, gen x and beyond, socializing well and getting along with one another. Sidenote: My husband had been wanting our son to start Tae Kwon Do for years, since he participated in several martial arts when he was younger. He did extensive research before deciding where to start. He picked William Kim's because of Grandmaster Kim's excellent reputation (Grandmaster is a 9th Don!) And, even though we live further away in Cordelia, we believe the quality of William Kim's is definitely worth the drive to Vallejo.

Going to this studio was the best decision we made for our family. Everyone at WMK is amazing and makes you feel so welcome. We are always bragging about our extended family! If you're considering it, you should just go in and give it a try. You won't be disappointed!
