Unfortunately the day we went it was a little rainy, so we didn't see as much of the gardens as we liked, but it looked like a beautiful property and the stalls at the Fair really showed off Cornwall's local foods, arts, and crafts. We entered Trereife House and stood in the hallway for ten minutes or so, hoping to get a tour, but nobody ever showed up. Well, someone did walk down the stairs and past us, but she ignored us, oddly enough. Too bad, because we would have enjoyed seeing the interior of this beautiful house. We left a little disappointed; the main reason we'd paid entry to the fair was actually to get to the house. We were happy to pay for the house too, we just had no opportunity to do so. We recommend going on days when they don't have special events going on, so you can get a proper tour of the estate.

It turned out to be part of the Relais & Chateaux Hotel group which I've stayed in, in Napa. Anyway asked the staff if I could be seated for lunch as only one table was occupied, they indicated they would have to ask the chef as they had a lack of staff. Anyway, I was seated and offered a wine and drinks list. Got a lovely Aperol spritz made correctly! The menu is small platoshich was great as it was a very warm day and you wouldn't want anything heavy. I chose the gazpacho and then burrata with heirloom tomatoes and pesto. Both dishes were very good. The tomatoes in the salad were perfectly ripe and the pesto was outstanding. The gazpacho was very good also, very flavorful and spiced just right, not overwhelming the vegetables. The service was slightly distracted, for instance no spoon was brought with the gazpacho and as no one checked to see if the food was ok for quite awhile, I had to wait to eat it. All in all though a lovely setting, wonderful food and a great place to be on such a beautiful afternoon

Our server appeared to be run off her feet because we rarely saw her. She wrote on the check "service fee is not included." I've never seen that in England before. There is often pipe music or something similar playing quietly in the background, which is also nice for setting the mood. The food is served on wooden plates and bowls, and no cutlery is given unless your meal type requires it or you actually request it. The waitresses are dressed as serving wenches and you wash your hands between courses using little wooden bowls of water with a piece of lemon floating in them! The signature dish is called chicken in the rough, which is half a chicken cooked in a special oven with gorgeous crispy skin. It is served with chips although you can pick salad or half and half if you want as well. There is a great choice on the menu of starters, mains and desserts and the food is lovely. Although this is 30 mins or so drive from us my dad still prefers to go there than any of the closer ones!
