Unfortunately the day we went it was a little rainy, so we didn't see as much of the gardens as we liked, but it looked like a beautiful property and the stalls at the Fair really showed off Cornwall's local foods, arts, and crafts. We entered Trereife House and stood in the hallway for ten minutes or so, hoping to get a tour, but nobody ever showed up. Well, someone did walk down the stairs and past us, but she ignored us, oddly enough. Too bad, because we would have enjoyed seeing the interior of this beautiful house. We left a little disappointed; the main reason we'd paid entry to the fair was actually to get to the house. We were happy to pay for the house too, we just had no opportunity to do so. We recommend going on days when they don't have special events going on, so you can get a proper tour of the estate.

I stayed here on a cheap Megabus inspired trip to Newquay, and it is undoubtedly a surf lodge. I…read morethink I was lucky I was there in the off season as the place has a distinct bad Ibiza flavor to it, i.e. not fun partying Ibiza so much as the morning after. What's great is that they offer good deals during the off season for hard-core surfer types and so I spent a few days here reacquainting myself with the ocean; they offer discounts to the surf school if you're staying at one of the Reef lodges. Word to the wise: it might be a good idea not to surf in October. I managed to get a dorm room to myself, which was nice as I could see how it would have been painfully cramped for four people. The rooms are at least en-suite, a major bonus in my book. They're also equipped with not-so-fancy flat screen TVs, though they're so awkwardly positioned that I suspect only two of four people could actually view it if they were in bed (which, incidentally, is the only place you can be in the room besides the bathroom). They have some interesting house rules though, including no food/drink in the rooms and they take a 30GBP deposit when you arrive to ensure that you don't break stuff or bring in unwelcome guests. Not a bad place, overall, though I think I'd tend to stay away during the high season unless I was appropriately tipsy.

It turned out to be part of the Relais & Chateaux Hotel group which I've stayed in, in Napa. Anyway asked the staff if I could be seated for lunch as only one table was occupied, they indicated they would have to ask the chef as they had a lack of staff. Anyway, I was seated and offered a wine and drinks list. Got a lovely Aperol spritz made correctly! The menu is small platoshich was great as it was a very warm day and you wouldn't want anything heavy. I chose the gazpacho and then burrata with heirloom tomatoes and pesto. Both dishes were very good. The tomatoes in the salad were perfectly ripe and the pesto was outstanding. The gazpacho was very good also, very flavorful and spiced just right, not overwhelming the vegetables. The service was slightly distracted, for instance no spoon was brought with the gazpacho and as no one checked to see if the food was ok for quite awhile, I had to wait to eat it. All in all though a lovely setting, wonderful food and a great place to be on such a beautiful afternoon

We stayed here recently on a stag do. The hotel came as part of a package, so I have no idea how…read moremuch it actually costs to stay. In terms of the building, this is probably one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. Our 4 person room had a bunk bed and two additional beds, crammed in so tightly that you had to side step between them. We were lucky (!) enough to have an en-suite, which had a slide door which did not shut probably. The shower started off freezing cold for the first few minutes before, in a mater of seconds, changing to being painfully hot. Dangerously so in fact; I would not want to let a child use this shower. The other rooms in the hotel share bathrooms, each broken in their own way (toilet impossible to flush, shower hose broken off wall etc.). The place seemed generally dirty. When we arrived we each had to pay a £30 cash deposit, which was only returned after inspection and waiting around for 45 minutes on departure. They made a big fuss about how good their English breakfasts were: sadly these fell well below expectations, featuring only the bear minimum of beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato and toast (no mushrooms, black pudding, hash browns here!). The ingredients all seemed to be from an economy/value supermarket range, and no-one in our group could stomach the sausages. They have a pool table in the front longe, and also an outside picnic table. The front of the hotel offers nice sea views. They also have a licensed bar (drinks poured from cans but at pub prices). On a positive note, the staff were genuinely friendly people, and seemed interested in where we were planning to go out, and what activities we had planned during the day (surfing). As such, I think this saved The Ridge from being 1 star - however, if it costs more than about £20 pppn to stay there I would definitely give this place a miss.
