I love how the teachers at this studio obviously make it important to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and inclusive. My 9 year old was not confident at all singing in front of her peers and by the second class she was in front of the microphone having the time of her life. When I signed my 12yo up she was convinced she would be bored, but has repeatedly asked to sign up for every new session. Whatever you are doing here, keep it up! Also love that they are welcoming of dancers who don't have any Irish heritage - this is a place for anyone who just loves dancing and Irish music. Classes are taught in downtown Novato at a beautiful dance studio. Update: My daughter was with Healy for a year and a half and grew from a nervous, shy, unsure little 6 year old, to becoming more confident. Alisa and Patti Ann really take the dancers (and parents ) under their wings while teaching a love of Irish dance, good technique and form. They are so kind, positive and encouraging. Somehow they keep it fun but keep the girls focused. My daughter has had some amazing experiences in our short time with Healy - from entering Irish dance competitions to performing on the field at Oracle park SF Giants Irish Heritage Night, the Marin County Fair, and walking in the SF St. Patrick's Day parade. It is steeped in so much family history that I can't wait to send my daughter here (yeah yeah yeah...in 238478234 years, I just threw up a little thinking about that. gag). I still drive by it from time to time and smile thinking of the endless hours upon hours I spent crying and cursing while I tried to get the steps down. Ahh, memories. I learned from Ann herself, and also her daughter. The feis we went to were all highly competitive and the steps we learned were always cutting edge, yet traditional. Everyone in the Irish dance community ask "Where do you dance?" and when I tell them that I trained w/ Healy, they're always impressed! An amazing place if you're really hardcore into Irish dancing. As a teacher, Sarah's cues were very easy to follow which made it so easy to access the inspiring elements of dance and music. Of course there is a learning curve in any new exercise, and I hardly felt it. If you haven't tried Nia, it's such a refreshing form of exercise- creative and therapeutic. The other class members were very warm and inviting. The other businesses in the downtown setting are charming and you get that neighborhood feel. I had a smoothie at Cafe Del Soul after my class and felt like a blessed chica. I'm very excited to try all the other classes and so happy to be a part of this positive community.
