I've only taken Mary Sherman's Sculpt and Pilates Mat classes, but they've been exceptional. Mary is probably the most experienced and knowledgeable Pilates instructor in Mill Valley. You can attend her classes in person or live-stream online, which is great if you're traveling or want to save a little money. I've yet to try any of the dance classes, but they all look and sound amazing and are always packed. I wish they had printed class schedules, as I prefer them over online schedules. read more

Ive been dancing at roco for very long and it's always been such an amazing community and classes and teachers! I have tried to dance at other places but they weren't as nice as roco! I wouldn't want to dance at any other place than roco. My only complaint would be the pillar in studio 4, it's placed very awkwardly and many people run into it during dancing. That would be my only complaint for roco because otherwise its one of the best studios I've ever danced at!! read more

Tika Morgan's World, Latin and Samba fusion classes are the highlights of my week. Tika's teaching style is fiery and intense and as a student you cannot help but feel her deep respect for the history of the diasporic music and movements. My child was recently enrolled in the "Intro to Dance" Spring Session. It was a sweet class, plenty of frolicking in tutus, fingers in noses and chasing each other on the side - typical three-year-old stuff. When we enrolled the brochure, website and receptionist all told me the session lasted until the 2nd of June, 2019. Last week; however, I was told there was a "cut and paste" error on their part and that the last three sessions were an additional fee. We all make mistakes but we also need to fix them. When I brought this to Annie Rosenthal (the owner) and Emily Daly's (the manager of the Mill Valley studio) attention they were dismissive. The solution was easy - make this right by fulfilling the session as promised and offer the three classes as part of the original course; however, Ms. Daly said it was simply not possible. With so many dance studios in Southern Marin, having a strong, honest bond with the local community is paramount in maintaining a solid business. With this type of dishonesty, lack of integrity and inability to fix their mistakes, I will take my business elsewhere. read more

As part of my training for Yelp DJ Battlefield Earth Part Deux, I went to Hip Hop this morning w/ the very talented Jackie Burns at Roco Dance Studio. I have to tell you something though. I already hurt. Not like the "Wow, this feels so good and I totally got a great workout, and I am going to show Sassy and JT and Bucky that I can dance and not just writhe around like a hooker on the Dance Floor" kind of hurt. More like the "Goddamn I'm a white girl and I cannot and should not be break dancing, and I think my shoulder might need to be popped back in by a professional" kind of hurt. I feel so street. Jackie.... I have something to tell you. I LOVE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My friends are ready to shoot me because all I talk about is how much I love class! So, here's the story... I've been looking into joining a new gym and couldn't decide which one to join, etc. etc. Then I started thinking... What do you LOVE to do, Ali? **lightbulb moment** And it hit me... I LOVE TO DANCE! So... I used to do ballet, too strict. Tap... uh no. Jazz... no. But... what about Hip Hop!?!?! Am I cool enough? Well no, I'm not cool enough. But Jackie makes me feel cool enough. I love love love hip hop class. She has two types of classes - Hip Hop with Abs, and Cardio Hip Hop. The cardio one is SOOOO much fun but it's Sun. mornings, so I'm not sure how often I'll make it up there. The abs one is a little more technical and there's a kick ass squats/abs session after. Jackie makes you do things until you are crying. Literally. But I listen to her because she has the body to prove it. Oh- and be ready to be dripping with sweat. Maybe in a few months I'll post my Sports Illustrated Swimsuit pictures online. :-) Jackie is so fun and energetic and nice and anyone can come to the classes at any time. Give it a few classes and you'll be fine. I can't attest to any other classes but it seems like people like them. All I know is go to Jackie's class and you'll love it. read more

Thank you Ali Gato R. for brining me to this hip hop class! For a couple of months now she has been trying to drag me along up to Marin on a Sunday morning. I mean, honestly, on a Sunday?! Could it POSSIBLY be that fun?! Yes, it is. It is definitely worth the agony of getting up so damn early on a Sunday. Jackie is so cute and she is a little ball of energy just bursting all over the place; it's great and it really pumps you up. She goes over the steps to make sure we all have the routine down and then we just do it over and over again, adding more steps as we go along. I was a little rusty since it's been years since I've even stepped foot in a dance studio. I have 13 years of ballet training so I figured I'd catch onto the steps (which I did) but I did look a little goofy doing hip hop because I am so lifted and not all into the floor. So if you're worried about looking foolish don't be; chances are there will be somebody in there that's worse than you. If you hate going to the gym but love to dance, this is a great work out that is loads of fun. read more

Roco is awesome. I've tried a number of instructors and classes here that are wonderful, but Jacquie's hip hop and Courtney's Zumba stand out. That being said, don't go to Tika's class unless you are in the mood for possible verbal abuse. There are no fans in the studios and it gets sweltering in there. The instructors don't like to put on the air conditioning, so the air circulation feels like zero, even with the door and windows open. This is something I dread, especially on warm days. Overall, Roco provides great quality dance teachers and a nice option to dance your way into shape. read more

There are some things on my bucket list that must be done before I die. That list is long, I won't front, but it's good. Anywhere from a safari in Africa with the lions and giraffes (their tongues are just bizarre and must see that in person) to base jumping off of something incredibly ridiculous and illegal (I like illegal things, sorry). But also the smaller, simpler things in life really get me off these days and help me to wake up every morning with nothing but gratitude and a big fat smile. Today was one of those days. Power being out in a dance studio isn't like having your power out at a retail store, we can function in the dark, well kinda. At least I have on many accounts, but then again, not everyone is a rockstar. Dance studios need what folks? MUSIC!!! Bass pumpin' hard through the floors are what drive us to bring it hard and heavy, especially on what Jacquie calls Superstar Sundays. This is where we get up all hung over to hit the studio at 9:30am to work it out like it's the best thing ever, and dammit, it is. But today, there was no power. After running to Safeway to grab some D size batteries to power our ghetto blaster (as that's all we had), it just wasn't working. I'm not that technologically advanced (no, I'm just not guys) Jacquie did as only she would do (instead of canceling class like most instructors would) because she's a passionate and insanely driven dancer with an incredible amount of dedication to her loyal student following, she backed her car up, opened the trunk and started blastin' the music. All of a sudden, we have eighteen people in the parking lot, rockin' it out like it's goin' outta style. They worked it like they owned it today, cause they did. With Jacquie at the forefront of the raucous and but well orchestrated crowd, the choreo was fly, and everyone was in sync, their sweat dripping off their faces onto the shining pavement in the sun. The cars on highway one began to roll their windows down and rubberneck, watching everyone work it out on the side of the road. It was amazing. It was beautiful. It was something that only Jacquie could have done. It was perfect. So yes, today I got to cross something off of my bucket list. I've always wanted to back up the car, turn on my bangin' ass stereo (cause if you knew me you'd KNOW how much I love my bass), and dance my ass off in the parking lot. Guess now I've just got to figure out where to base jump off of. Oh how difficult life is when decisions are hard like that. read more

(pardon my language) If you like to shake your ass, this is the place to do it! (ok language better from here on out) Let's talk about fitness with fun, dancing is the way to go. I've checked out Jacquie's Cardio Hip Hop and Beginners Hip Hop classes, they are both amazing. She's a great teacher and kicks your butt. Cardio hip hop is easy to follow and keeps your heart rate up, not to mention you are drenched with sweat by the time it's over. Jacquie also adds in a FREE weight training session to the end of both of her classes. Yeah, I said it, FREE... Whatever Jacquie says to do, I do it. Check out her body, she knows what she's doing. I dragged a friend of mine to Tika's "Zumba" class, zumba with quotes because it's not your normal zumba. Tika is all about the dance more then fitness and I appreciate that. Though I'm not drenched in sweat as much as Jacquie's cardio class, I appreciate the movement and feel Tika brings to her version of zumba. I'm a huge fan and I've been frequenting both Fairfax and Mill Valley studios at least 3 times a week. If you're looking for a great way to burn calories and having fun doing it. Tika Morgan! The real deal! Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, I wake up with a smile on my face. I know that right after I drop off my kids at school, I get to go on a joyous vacation. I get to party in the daytime. Dance to a playlist I only wish I could have on my own iPod. I get to sweat and laugh and enjoy an hour of pure abandon: Tika Morgan's Latin Dance Fusion. Is it exercise? Sheesh...I came to my first class already in pretty great shape but twenty-minutes in, I was reaching for my water bottle and standing by the window of Roco's lovely dance studio for gulps of air. You think Spinning burns the calories?! Pa-leese!? After a few months of Tika, my body is...well...Brazil-ready. Drive by the studio and see for yourself - the class is always full (even on the drizzliest of days), the mirrors are steamed up, t-shirts are drenched and the women are enjoying themselves, wondering where the hour went. Tika has a community of loyal followers and inspires a room of camaraderie and fun. Dancers and non-dancers alike - everyone's having a blast. Tika also teaches classes at the Roco Fairfax studio. I'm reorganizing my life to try and get to her Silvestre Technique classes in the evening. Her energy is infectious and healing and female-positive. Toss out the Wellbutrin, leave the husband and kids to fend for themselves for the hour and skip (Samba) over to Tika's class for an hour of gut-busting, heart-filled, drum-beating delight! read more

Tika's passion for dance rooted in African diaspora (basically all dance!) is spiritual, inspirational and empowering. The message she imparts is that we are bigger and more powerful than we often think we are and that we have so much to offer the world. I've met so many amazing women of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities in this class who bring such joy, love and energy to the group. Finally! I've found a studio with adult hip hop, jazz, and ballet. It has been 18 years since I've started dancing and I've stuck to mainly studios and student groups. RoCo brings the technique and style that I have grown up with. After moving here from the South Bay and trying other studios in the area, RoCo is the place I called home. I started dancing after I watched Tika Morgan's Latin Dance Fusion in Fairfax. I have been dancing ever since and try to get to Tika's classes whenever I can. She teaches not only dance technique, but also cultural history and awareness. I love Roco so much!!!!!!!!! I have been going here since I was in kindergarten and from the beginning I absolutely loved it! It has made me a better dancer over the years. Although there are somethings that really annoy my family about Roco. In almost every dance studio you go to there is going to be something that really annoys you. It depends on the dancer, whether the studio is right for her/him or not. If you don't like a dance studio that is because it does not fit with your daughter/son or because you don't like the way they do things. For me Roco dance is a good studio because they are not strict there and after like 2 or 3 months they know what level you are at and they know if you need to be placed in a higher group or whether you are perfect in your group. read more

I feel very mixed about Roco. I LOVE having a dance studio right down the street from my house. But as a pretty inexperienced dancer, I find their "beginners" classes to have ridiculously complex choreography--and some of the teachers to have major attitude. Classes with Andreina and Teya are the best--they're fun, relaxed, enthusiastic. Others, not so much. And now that I have my little man with me, I wish they offered a mom-baby class or two (isn't there enough demand in Baby Central, Southern Marin?). Also on my wish list? More classes that offer a range of levels and are truly welcoming to beginners. How else are we supposed to learn?? read more

Dance classes are good, but the performances twice a year are a real drag, especially if you have multiple kids enrolled. They end up being expensive and incredibly time consuming. After shelling out money all year, I don't enjoy the extra cash grab and time grab. They can't even be on schedule. You can expect a solid half an hour behind schedule as par for the course. On your third trip to the civic center you start to get fed up with the extra wait time. read more

A few years ago my 10 year old wanted to try a contemporary dance class at Roco, after having done hip hop for several rounds. She tried one class, but really didn't like it, and burst into tears afterwards...she felt horrible. So I went to the front desk and asked if I could get my money back...since it was literally just the first class...and was told NO, it goes against policy. No refunds apparently. This was for $500+. I was shocked. Totally shocked. After some back and forth via email, I was awarded a credit (I believe it was about a year later maybe less). Turns our my "credit" was only good for a year...and expired. I was not given any notice of this - and thought I would like to try an adult class with that credit - but... "oh well"... I'm very annoyed by this, I'm out $500+ and think this policy is HORRIBLE. read more

Friendly, helpful, and accommodating! Roco Dance has amazing and gracious instructors, experienced, fun and encouraging to newcomers. The additional staff is also very helpful. I rode my bike on a rainy day to a class and they were welcoming even with my wet rain gear. They also watched my bike for me, which was great since I had forgotten my lock. read more

Very mixed feelings about this place. My daughter danced here for years and years -- like, 10 years -- which she loved. But at the end of it the director didn't even know her name. It was a very cliquey-feeling place and if you weren't a brassy "cool girl" they ignored you. My daughter had been hoping to join the dance company and one day it turned out everyone who had been dancing with her all those years was in the company -- except her. She inquired about this and the director told her to take a summer workshop so she could observe her (she'd had 10 years to observe her!) which my daughter did -- and then the director told her she was too shy. I still resent paying for that workshop. Those are the bad feelings in the "mixed feelings." The good feelings are that my daughter learned to love dancing there and still dances in college. read more

I wouldn't recommend this for parents who have children under first grade if they tend to be shy and/or don't like drop-off types of activities. If you sign your kid up and he/she doesn't like it, the refund policy is the most unfriendly to toddlers/children I've seen. You don't get a dollar back. Even if after the first class the child hates it. Most other childrens activities allow some sort of pro-rated fees back. They say they allow paid drop in classes to test out the class first, but problem with that is the classes usually fill up. So...if they have such strong wait lists for classes, why not just allow kids to drop out within the first one or two classes and pro-rate something back and then let someone else eager to get into the class in? win/win for all three - studio gets more money/kid who hates class doesn't get forced to go because mom and dad already paid/kid who's dying to get into class gets in... Probably not a shocker...but this studio isn't really little child focused/friendly which shows in it's refund policy. If your kid isn't shy then it's probably a great place. But if you have a kid that's a little unpredictable/shy/..., I wouldn't risk it. Also - classes are rather big, a little rowdy, so again - not great for a more shy/sensitive child. read more

Walked in to three women. Approached aggressively as if I don't belong. Not just in the studio, but as if I'm not a human. Likely by the belief that I'm 'imposing' and that all men are just like the ones that kicked these three women to the dirt for them to be angry at a man, whether in 'suit' or 'rags,' and 'gave' them a 'reason' to 'dance.' Made a request through email to a specific individual, cross-talk was established imposingly, I made notification of my 'disapproval' of such, and I was immediately scolded by another's 'memory' of me in a different facility of a 'problem' in which the only 'problem' was lack of communication from the owner. FIRST EXPERIENCE TERRIBLE Left feeling accosted, berated, chided about, gossiped of, and even these words, i'd know, based on female empowership, would likely be taken advantage of should they choose to continue their gender battle for female superiority. read more

Intensati with Eileen is an incredible work out and it leaves you feeling so inspired! I love the combo of a movement that goes with a positive self affirmation- very creative and uplifting! I am recovering from a rather serious injury and Eileen helped me modify and was nothing short of my cheerleader! Roco Dance is an incredible local resource. My son has been dancing there for several years, starting with breaking, and now adding modern, hip hop, and contemporary. It has been an amazing experience for him with exceptional instructor/choreographers and wonderful all around coaching from Annie Parr. I've taken Jacquie's awesome cardio hip hop class and recently tried Naby's super fun West African dance class. We are fortunate to have such talented dancers teaching in our community. read more

I have been dancing for more years than most and have to say that ROCO may be awesome for experienced dancers, but not when it comes to the beginning dancer. The Summer workshop for kids is billed as a workshop for the inexperienced dancer but my daughter found out that most of the girls in the class had been dancing for quite a few years. One of the ballet teachers literally told my daughter to "just run across the floor" when my daughter told her she didn't know what to do. Can't say that that's particularly supportive or educational. Would be nice if they just said it wasn't a beginning workshop when we first called. read more

Awesome!!! I did my first hip hop class on Monday with Jackie and loved it. She's got passion and energy, and when we're ready to collapse, she's right there to pump you up. It was my first hip hop class ever so I had some troubles picking up the steps. However, even though she's doing her thing up at the front of the room, she's got her eyes on everyone and will subtlety be there to get you back on track. I loved it. The class was an hour and 40 mins (although I think it's schedule to be less) and included cardio & strength training. Perfect combo - you feel like you've worked out when you're done. How to describe the studio - well, Roca Dance & Fitness is in a one story building which is set up like an outdoor mall, hence, there are doors all around the building similar to a door for each retail shop, except, the shop spaces are a dance studio. Hence there are plenty of sun lights in the dance room and the rooms are isolated from each other so you don't hear the music of the other rooms. The room itself is fairly large with mirrors in the front and a good sound system. Overall, if you're looking for a fun and a good workout, this is the class. I love it and can't wait to go back. read more

I had tasted different classes at Roco but never felt drawn to any particular teacher until a friend of mine suggested I try Tika Morgan's class. I was hooked after that first class, just as the majority of women are who attend her classes. Tika is an incredibly gifted and dedicated teacher, what she brings to each class she teaches is more than exercise it is priceless and precious art. When learning a new type of dance, like Latin is to me, it takes going as frequently as possible to retrain or unlearn and take on the new movement. One of the many gems of Tika is that she is there regularly and often, ready to help us grow and reach. Tika creates a safe and dynamic atmosphere that is consistently available for her students. In my case she has reshaped my paradigm of dance and the relationship with my body. Tikas passion for Latin dance is contagious and makes the world a better place to be. Naby Bangoura who teaches West African is also a teacher who I find exceptional. I took his class for the first time Easter Sunday only because Tika was not teaching Samba that day. His class is a wonderful complement to Tika's class and it would be great to be able to take Naby's class at Roco at a time when Tika is not teaching so not to miss Tika's class. read more

I have been dancing at Roco since my son was born in 2009. Back then the receptionists or another dance teacher would watch him for me while I took Annie's modern classes. I showed up one evening thinking I was trying a Zumba class, was corrected that it was Samba. I said what the heck and tried it anyway. I LOVED it!! This was my introduction to Tika Morgan. I have been going religiously to her classes ever since and feel that this is the time in my life to embrace this dance form. Tika is an amazing teacher. Having danced for years in college, in the community in San Francisco, and studying an Indian classical dance form very seriously for years having a high caliber artfully demanding teacher whose very passion is dance is the MOST IMPORTANT thing. To get a cultural understanding, to experience the drive to improve, to feel the spirit move through the room, this all makes a great dance class, a truly phenomenal teacher. Tika Morgan teaches Zumba at Roco. She is a wonderful dancer who knows her subject and goes way beyond a traditional 'zumba' class. She goes to Brazil to study for a month every year and brings back new steps & fabulous music. She really knows her material and the classes are fun, aerobic and real dance. RoCo Mill Valley got it going on! I've been shaking my thang in Anna's Friday morning Afro-Brazilian class for almost three years now. I originally chose this class simply because I had Friday mornings free and I wanted to take a dance class--any class. But after one class, I was hooked. Everyone there is truly thrilled to be there, and the energy is supportive and fun--Anna cultivates an inclusive, non-competitive vibe and welcomes dancers at every level, from beginners to veteran carnivale-goers. She gives just the perfect amount of instruction and cultural/mythological context to the dances we're doing (I believe she's a Doctor of Latin American studies) but mostly we just dance our little hearts out. Fab music, great workout, inspiring group of regulars. Part of me selfishly wants to keep Anna's wonderful classes under wraps so they don't get too crowded, but the gracious part of me wants to share it with everyone in Marin. . .See you there! read more
