If you like hiking, there are a few trails around the estate to enjoy. The history of the grounds was fascinating as it tells of a very diverse life of one of American history's statesman. This guy did everything, and his uncle set him up in a good position to succeed in life The guest house, not the original home on the property, shows off items that belonged to the Monroes. Hats off to Roy White who gave a marvelous introduction to the grounds, its history and use. The staff were super friendly. One of the curators gave me a great rundown of the future excavation and the re-unveiling of the foundation of the original Monroe residence. A few folks were checking out the grounds for a wedding location, their host was also nice. During the summer they honor the Blue Star Program so access to the grounds is free. Recommended summer stop.

Who knew that Richmond had so much culture? This city has a lot of mural in its downtown area and…read morethey are all so good. You can literally jump from one mural to the next. I wish I could do a page for each and everyone, but that would be a full time job. You will find concentrations of them in an area by the canal and near the downtown restaurants. I wish I could pick a favorite or two, but they are also so good. I recommend spending a half day to a day on a public art tour. The downtown area is rich with art and I believe that you will throughly enjoy it.

Murals throughout cities are some of my favorite ways to explore a city, they tell so much about locals, what they love, who they are, where they come from and what direction they want to go. Artist: James Bullough, 620 N Lombardy St- the mural of the floating lady is captivating. Artist: Lelo, 1711 East Main St (has lots around town)- great unique style that has you seeing more than one thing in the vibrant colors! As we…read moremeandered through the curvy mountains of VA and WVA to get here, we we worried as we didn't have any cell signals and much of the country roads were winding and barren, except of course for the beautiful foliage. Lots of open farmland and barns or just empty fields. But we drove with trepidation through these mountains until we finally arrived at Humpback Covered Bridge! It was worth the drive! Some other reviews have lots of stats about this bridge which is worth looking up, so I won't repeat them here, but suffice it to say, I was enthralled with this bridge that I've been wanting to visit for years!! I love covered bridges and have a collection of them on my Yelp profile if you'd like to take a gander. And I must say, this is one of my favorites considering the structural design, the historic value, the Virginia heritage, and lovely park area with picnic tables and the LOVE sign. Covington VA is definitely on my come back list!!

For what comes with your entry pass, the sale is a very good value. $36 for adults and $34 for seniors. $18 for children 6-12 and children under 6 are free. Included in your entry ticket is your Luray Caverns self-guided tour, which simply means you walk through the caverns at your own pace, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. If you have time, there is also a garden maze nextdoor which is $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 and under are free. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance, online, as ticket lines in person can someone be long with many tour groups. What I love about Luray Caverns is it is the largest cavern on the east coast and has an interesting history. Young boys walking in a field and noticing air coming from a sinkhole led to the discovery of the caverns in the late 1800s. There are huge chambers in the caverns, making space for large groups to gather. You'll also observe wishing pools, sparkling lakes that present an optical illusion, and original paved walkways. Seeing the stalactites and stalagmites is a wonder. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is also a must-see as it is the world's largest musical instrument in the caves. If visiting in the summer, you'll appreciate the drop in temperature as you descend the caves, making for a cool summer activity. The temperature in the caves remain consistent throughout the year. One thing to note is there are narrow ramps and walking paths throughout the caverns, so keep this in mind if visiting with guests with mobility concerns. Overall, a very good experience and one worth visiting.
