Honestly, most of the questions that were being asked are basic biology questions that I would hope someone working with animals would know. That was disappointing. You cannot take videos at this facility and I can only assume it's because they do not want evidence of the animals behavior (or lack there of) being seen. The gift shop is one of the worst I've seen in a park like this. Everything is 5x the purchase price of any online retailer. I understand the money comes back to the animals so there is an up charge, but $70 for two stuffed animals and a magnet is crazy.

For basically being in the city, we were impressed by how large it was. I was expecting a much smaller zoo, and maybe it is land mass wise, but they manage to fit a lot in. It was a hot summer day, so we worried we'd miss out on a lot of the animals trying to find cooler spots to rest in, but many more were out than we expect, and a lot of the enclosures had both indoor and outdoor viewing areas, which helped allow us to see more, as well as get us out of the sun and cool down ourselves. They had a great variety of animals, with many varieties of primates. They had a reptile house, where you could go see or many different snakes and spiders, or if that's not your thing you could just as easily avoid it all together. We saw signs around the parking offering various talks about the animals at different times. We caught the chimp talk which was fun and they enticed the chimps to come for the chat with treats. All in all, it was a really fun time, and somewhere I'd recommend, especially with children. This was a much more impressive zoo than I expected.

The zoo is designed based on country and animals found In that geographical region. Many of the stations have QR codes you can scan to learn more about the animals in question. The animals all appear to have clean areas with fresh water. You will often see employees cleaning the areas. Today, we participated in the feeding of George, a resident giraffe. It was such an incredible experience. They do charge a fee for feeding the animals, but it is minimal and just another way to help support this incredible zoo. I would recommend going early, around 9:30, to beat the heat and crowds. Some of the concession stands may not be open that early, but who needs ice cream at 9AM? If you go later, they have misting stations located throughout the zoo to help you stay cool. They also have a petting zoo with a small train. I haven't participate in this yet, but it is available. There is also a carousel you can ride. As for parking, they have alot of spots and the lots are relatively close. Overall, I think this is a great activity to do if you are traveling through Chattanooga or even if you are a local. If you live here, I would recommend getting a membership so you can go as often as you want.

One building focuses on rivers and lakes, while the other highlights creatures from the ocean. Both were very impressive, and will take about 1-1.5 hours each to explore. We saw all kinds of creatures we'd never seen before in both the river building and the ocean, but I'd think the ocean building was by far our favorite because of all the brightly colored creatures, for the most part the ones found in the rivers are a bit more tame and muted in color. The tanks in both were well stocked, and there was plenty of signage at the tanks to help you identify different species. In addition to water life, they also had some lemurs on the top floor and a butterfly garden, which was full, but hard to get pictures of. They offered interactive experiences with several touch tanks through out the aquarium, and easy to find staff that could generally answer your questions, or were really good at making up answers. Pricing was a little on the high end at about $40 for adults and $30 for kids, and anyone under 3 is free. I understand it costs a lot to maintain, but it just adds up quickly. We still had a great time, and enjoyed the experience, and would recommend to others

This is a family park and family's gotta use the bathroom. They only have port o John's. That's fine for a county fair but for a year round experience they should have more options. Also they only have 1 way out in the parking lot to use until you check in. The line during the fall is massive and 1 doesn't cut it. I love the animals but it felt a bit more tiger king to me at points. I didn't understand the other non farm animals. The reservation system while in practice is nice needs work. We went during a busy time of year and didn't know we had to make a reservation until we got to the front of the line. That was 30 minutes in the heat with 3 toddlers. I get that it is on their website but it is not will shown. We heard multiple people also complain that they came and couldn't get in. Maybe a sign in the parking lot, reservations required with a QR code. I wouldn't make the the drive. But your kids most likely would like it.

The residents of Decatur, Alabama are fortunate enough to have Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in their community. If you find yourself living in or visiting the area, I would definitely recommend a visit to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. I will give Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge five stars overall. All park attendants were efficient, kind, informed, and organized. There are two enclosures for bird watching, one is heated and the other is not. The heated one is a two-story structure with bleacher-styled seating and fully glassed walls which offer a really nice view. This building also has floor-mounted binoculars. All of the pathways were wide and comfortable. They are remodeling the visitor's center which partially reopened in March 2023. They are adding new interpretive exhibits which should be cool to see! I'm really happy we have this refuge that manages and protects habitat for 12 federally endangered or threatened species. It's definitely worth the short drive to Decatur to visit!

One thing I will say is the ground was pretty muddy on the day we went - I wish I wore rain boots. That thick red clay mud is tough to wash off so I would keep that in mind! Also I saw several people with dogs - and that's really cool and good to know for future trips! The day we went they had several food trucks out there too.
