Best place to go for fresh fruit and vegetables! Go early to get the best stiff though. Also a great supplier of sauces and local goods.

Southwind Orchards - Triumph apples-a recent release from the University of MN

Southwind Orchards

YAY! I can't tell you how happy we were to find this lovely apple orchard (& market)!!! We're from…read moreout of town, and we'd spent the day taking scenic drives from Rochester to Winona, to La Crosse, and then up the "Apple Orchard Scenic Byway". We'd stopped at a little winery, and picked up a brochure for Southwind Orchards and we thought "YES! We want apples!". Well lucky for us, we pulled in at 4:48 on Sunday afternoon just as they were closing up. If we'd missed them, we would have been so disappointed! We ran in and picked up a couple bags of Honey-crisp apples, which are my personal fave. We also picked up a few jams/jellies and goodies (carmel, eh-hem). The Market is cute: it's not just apples, they've also got the jams/jellies, apple pies, cider and other great stuff. You could go crazy in here and by all kinds of delicious goodies. The lady who was working seemed kinda cranky, but there was a friendly gentleman (who for some reason struck me as possibly the owner...?) who said that there were bigger bags of apples they'd already put away but would be more than happy to grab for us. Which I thought was nice. The orchard is in an absolutely BEAUTIFUL valley; gorgeous apple orchards, and streams, and horses, and winding roads. It's just a gorgeous area. We enjoyed being out driving and taking in the scenery of the area. My only complaint is that they don't accept Discover card!!! UGH. My main form of payment is Discover (and, I may or may not work for them, I refuse to confirm or deny) so it kills me. Part of the reason it's 4-stars and not 5. I definitely recommend stopping here for apples and whatever other apple "accessories" you're in the market for. They've got nice stuff. Support your local farmers! As soon as we got in the car we grabbed out a couple apples and bit in - so crispy and delicious, fresh off the tree.

We got a vegan quiche ($14) which was gluten-free and tasted pretty good. We also had a vegan peanut butter dessert bar thing that was nice. This is the perfect spot if you're looking for a vegan breakfast or need to stock up on staples while in Winona.

A quick search led us to the co-op. Their website has the daily menu posted which was extremely helpful (and tantalizing!) Their hours were reasonable given the season and the options plentiful. Both days of chilly, cold climbing ended with trips to the co-op for fresh organic veggies, fruit, as well as chocolate and snacks. But also with a HOT MEAL which was so appreciated by us. We took everything to our hotel room and feasted. Everything was delicious and the staff was so friendly and wonderful. The kitchen space (which was open and visible) was clean, organized and smelled great. The soups were awesome also and the leftovers from the day prior were available to take home and heat (so we were able to try one we thought we missed from the day prior - lucky us!) We enjoyed everything and love the prepackaged salads and desserts as well as the mains. The whole place was easy to navigate and had wonderful options. We know we have a good option for healthy, organic, and plant-based food during our next visit to Winona to climb which we are already looking forward to. Kudos to the staff of this co-op and to the community for supporting such a wonderful establishment. Winona is an impressive little community that should continue to support the outdoor activities year round it can host. We were glad to bring our dollars and our business to the community thanks to the folks running the ice climbing park and this awesome co-op.

"It's a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes." (The Godfather)…read more At Sapori di Sicilia, the message is considerably more appetizing: "Eat the pasta and nobody gets hurt." Walking in for the first time, I half-expected owner Eric Mullen to greet me with cotton-stuffed cheeks and a brooding stare. Instead -- as one Yelp reviewer memorably noted -- Eric looks like he's straight out of Super Mario, more likely to trade you a heavenly mocha for three gold coins than make you an offer you can't refuse. After a four-month pilgrimage to Italy in 2018 to learn the art of Sicilian cooking, Mullen returned to Winona and opened Sapori in 2020, filling a gap in the local food scene roughly the size of a horse head in a mobster's bed. The city desperately needed authentic Italian food, and Sapori delivered. No favors owed. No strings attached. *This time.* Everything here is made by hand: pasta, sauces, bread, pastries, and the gelato. The whole operation, with no shortcuts. The Bronze-cut Pasta: It clings to the sauce with the loyalty of a wartime consigliere who knows exactly where the bodies are buried. The pistachio pesto stands out, though it could use a touch more olive oil or pasta water. A minor grievance that doesn't warrant a trip to the river bottom in concrete shoes. The Pastries and Cakes: Genuinely dangerous. The Mascarpone cheesecake and chocolate cake slice are to die for -- and I mean that in the most Sicilian sense possible. Eat them. Tell no one. The Gelato: Should be under federal investigation. Light, creamy, and so authentically Italian it practically has its own accent. The pale green pistachio is rich, nutty, and deeply serious about its heritage. The Vibe: Warm. Hospitable. A real hit, but with zero cleanup crews required. The Verdict: Leave the gun. And for the love of all that is holy, take the cake and gelato too. You don't need a passport, a secret handshake, or a letter of introduction from a guy who knows a guy. Just show up hungry and show the proper respect.

The service was great, we had a party of 12 and they accommodated us with great attention. Definitely recommend the gelato for dessert as well as a beautifully made cannoli enjoyed with a macchiato.
