Rochester Castle dominates the town with its large square keep: having seen so much of the castle already, I was curious to explore inside. Note that one of the towers is round: it had to be rebuilt after King John undermined it by burning the wooden supports with the fat of 40 pigs!
The Castle is set in gardens, and you climb a large wooden staircase to enter. Once inside, there are plenty more stairs, so do be aware that you have to be happy with lots of steps to enjoy your visit. The interior is largely ruined, so don't expect lots of rooms to explore. However, you can walk around the edges of each floor and are rewarded for the effort with amazing views over the city and cathedral. This is a particularly good vantage pointfor a glimpse of Satis House, once visited by Elizabeth I.
In summary, if your mobility is limited then the castle is best avoided: enjoy the surrounding gardens instead. However, if you don't mind lots of stairs, you'll love the views from the top and the chance to soak up the atmosphere. read more
