I have insured my home, flood and car there for 3 years, and upon renewal this year, simply received an email reminder from someone I never heard of. No mention of the new cost, whether they had looked around to find something better, etc. Just basically: "Here, pay this." I attempted to renew online and emailed her that I was unable to. I included my phone number so she could call me. No call. No service. No offer to expedite payment. Just another email with an 800 # for the company. In the entire episode, I never heard from my agent. Not what I would expect from a service-oriented company.

Based on the outstanding Yelp reviews, I called and reached Alicia who was TRULY wonderful to work…read morewith!! Unfortunately, I am a livid green consumer when it comes to the enormous nuances in insuring flood versus homeowner/ hurricane and " other perils" damage, especially for coastal property. I have dealt with Chubb Insurance for 40 years with large homes antiques etc in NY, VA. And MN so this was all GREEK to me. With 20 years experience in consumer products Mktg I tackle finding insurance head on with expansive (7 different companies called) and thorough. " market research". Alicia I soon realized did not realize the depth of my ignorance, and so naturally did not ask a lot of questions. When I phoned her back one day, Marcia answered the phone and immediately confronted me with the question," what are you doing with Alicia". We are a tough nut of a customer because after acquiring the condo a few years ago from his family estate ( buy out of siblings), my husband moved in and decided he did not need insurance (!). Wrong. So Alicia graciously explained she could not go to 10 other insurance companies they represent and stated they were not responding as well. So this left us with just one insurance group. While working with her I was calling interviewing other agents as well and from them, learned about the new Florida laws that protect insurance companies even after a contract is signed, if they conduct a 4 point inspection later -- called a " point of claim " underwriting, they can drop the policy! Beware. I also learned that " Hurricane ". does not include water/ flood damage, and you can have a terrible storm with wind ( hurricane- homeowners policy) AND storm surge bringing rising water that can decimate walls furniture electrical panels etc ( flood insurance policy= anything damaged by water ). So I later learned from others that I need a lot of insurance for BOTH. The one policy she could offer me came in as the second highest in cost, and at that time I ignorantly was seeking just $15,000 in flood insurance, and $135,000 in homeowners coverage ( small 2 bedrm condo). This 2 week telephone conferencing project has been tough, peril less and unnerving !!! A lot is at stake when you move and reside (me, seasonally) in stormy Florida. If your property is older than the 1970's you may have aluminum wiring, polybutylene pipes. Etc etc. and the insurance policy even after accepting you, can reject your future claim if they find these and many other items in your damaged home. Yikes. Be thorough, educate yourself well. Good luck.

As a local business owner, I understand the importance of customer service and the value in "word…read moreof mouth" and typically would never leave a negative review without first having a discussion with the source. However, my experience with Hough & Co. has been exceptionally stressful and expensive. Fortunately I have a bookkeeper who manages both my business as well as my personal finances. She basically keeps everything organized, manages all the data entry in Quickbooks and then shares the ledger with the accountant once per year to file our year-end taxes. Believe me, she's worth every penny. (Even the Hough & Co. accountant commented on her organizational skills upon seeing my business's QuickBooks, and asked if she takes referrals.) Yet, having her provide accurate documentation in a timely manner never seemed to expedite the process or elevate any costs for his CPA services. Honestly, since 2018 my taxes have yet to be filed on-time despite my best efforts as a client. Delays occurred often in the 3 years of working with Hough & Co. Tax extensions were filed on my behalf and my business was changed from an LLC to an S-Corp filing without any prior explanation or authorization/my approval. (Although "it may be in the best interest of the business", it's ultimately a decision for the owner to make - not an accountant.) The last and final disappointment came (June 2022) while in the midst of acquiring financing for a mortgage and undergoing the underwriting process (which as a self-employed, single individual can be challenging and stressful in and of itself); I learned that yet again my previous year's taxes were not ready to be filed. Unfortunately, due to the urgency of the situation I didn't have additional days or weeks to wait for financial information that was shared with Hough & Co. back in Feb 2022. At the time, I already knew I'd be forced to expedite documentation (once again having to hand deliver my taxes to the IRS). It became very apparent I needed to make a decision and I sent an email notifying my accountant at Hough & Co. that I would be taking my financials to another firm to ensure deadlines and responsibilities would be met. At which point, the accountant reacted defensively to my decision; stating he felt very insulted by my email, followed by calls from his office - as though the situation was personal. It wasn't personal, it's simply business. I hired him to do my taxes, and after realizing he was unable to complete them in a timely manner, it was necessary to make a change. (For the record) Less than 48-hours of our meeting, the new accountant was able to complete and finalize both my business and personal taxes and I'm grateful to announce that I was able to close on my home. Hough & Company's inability to properly communicate or follow through on commitments was unfortunate, yet receiving a $2000 invoice for those "billable hours" without providing the work he was hired to complete is not exactly ethical; yet will be paid (because karma is real).
