I am very fortunate to have studied with Robert Wald who is, without a doubt, the best acting coach in the business!

I learned about the Point Loma Summer Concerts at the end of last season, so we made sure to make…read moreit out this summer. I will say, as a music lover, I did not go for the music. They generally have cover bands, nothing too exciting... and it's a free community concert, so don't expect any big gig, but it is a lovely community event and supports youth music education. A big part of it is the raffle that supports the music education program. This year the series lasted 5 weeks for 5 Friday shows. We went for the Pine Mountain Logs, which was the last band of the season. If you are a fan of cover bands, you might enjoy dancing to music from the 70's to 90's with lots of medleys. There were lots of people up and having a great time. The concert series takes place in a park just off Catalina Boulevard. You enter on a baseball diamond. Parking is easy on the nearby side streets. It is very well organized, with guards for safe street-crossing, and lots of vendors. It really was very hassle-free. People were in great spirits. It is definitely a family event. It is kid-friendly and dog-friendly. We met up with friends, and brought a picnic dinner. The concert starts with a youth-band at 5:30, and then the main band around 6:30 or so with a break for the raffle. We had a relaxing evening, and our dog had a great time. I look forward to going back next year.

This is a review from a point of view of a swing dancer. In brief, this venue is nothing short of…read moreawesome if a band with swing music is playing (I visited for a Big Time Operator, BTO). The park is a huge grassy field that can fit (and fits) thousands of people. If you want to sit down, bring your own lawn chair. Note that premier spots are reserved for low chairs where you recline. The dance happens in front of the stage, on the grass. So the dancing shoes are completely useless, and you should be watching for imperfections in the ground. No advanced moves are possible, naturally, although skilled followers can execute a swingout. A tip from my experience: do not lead any double turn even to a slow music (nothing bad happened, but the result was awkward). There might be a couple of hundred people dancing, many of them totally unskilled. The lead has to watch for them and small kids running around at an amazing speed, this provides extra fun. A good band will bring many people from the swing community, so finding a partner to dance is easier than expected (I still suggest to bring one's own lead or follow, just in case). Logistics: the event is free and perfectly organized. Parking is hard, allow 5-7 minutes for walking after leaving your car on Point Loma residential streets. The event starts at 5:30PM, but the first hour is a warm-up by the local kid's band. Dance goes on until 8:30PM. This is late enough for the temperatures become comfortable even on a hot day. Overall: if BTO is playing, drop everything else (except for your dance partner) and go.

I was a part of DanzArts' adult company Sabor Mexico for three years, and while I came in hopeful…read moreand excited to dance, what I experienced was a toxic environment fueled by manipulation, favoritism, and complete lack of professionalism from the director, Patricia Astorga. Patricia is the opposite of what a leader should be. The moment she senses loyalty from you, she will use you to your breaking point assigning every task possible just to avoid lifting a finger herself. Dancers are expected to travel long distances for performances (many of them physically demanding) and not only don't get paid we're also expected to pay out of pocket for gas and other expenses. Zero compensation, zero appreciation. The company's board? Just her inner circle of close friends who are completely biased and will twist your words to defend Patricia, no matter how valid your concerns are. When you finally see her true colors, you realize this is not a healthy dance community it's a dictatorship masked as a cultural organization. Patricia has spoken badly about her own dancers behind their backs including her co-director and has actively stirred drama to turn people against each other. She even body shamed me when a 13year old dress ripped as I put it on ( I'm not overweight). Instead of offering help or support, she made it a moment of shame. Financially, the lack of transparency is disturbing. She collects donations and won't even tell her board where the money goes. Meanwhile, we've seen her use the company credit card for personal expenses like hair appointments. During a trip to Campeche in 2023, each dancer was required to pay over $300 "for food" to this day, no one knows where that money went. This review only covers the adult side of DanzArts. When it comes to the children's academy, Patricia is rarely present at all. It was Kristina Cunningham, a now former leader who left due to similar issues, who raised funds and ran the program. Patricia allegedly took the kids' fundraising money too, and again no explanation was ever given. If you're looking for a loyal, respectful, and inspiring dance community, THIS IS NOT IT. I wish someone had warned me sooner so I'm warning you now.

My only gripe is if you have to leave the company before the season is over due to health issues, you still have to do community service for them. And the time I served community service, I'm not sure if Angel and Jaami communicated effectively because Angel told me I was done fulfilling it, but Jaami emailed me later I still owed hours and tried to have me wash their cars. So I felt a bit taken advantage of in that regard because I really busted my butt with fulfilling my hours. I also was struggling health wise with my autoimmune disease so I couldn't do more than what I already had. However other than that I loved dancing with this group! And Jaami and Angel are amazing choreographers. If I ever danced for them again in the future, I'd just be sure to be honest about my health and make sure they knew what was going on with me so that maybe they'd be more understanding. The first time around I didn't know I was autoimmune until I ended before the season was over when I started getting sick . Thanks kE for some great memories!

Thanks Friends! I was honestly blown away! Have I just been watching mediocre and "bad" modern dance this entire time? The partnering work of the 2nd and 3rd pieces blew me away...mental note to self: work on upper body strength! The rest of the choreography was smooth, wellconnected, athletic, and beautiful; wheras most modern dances I've seen typically looks as if the dancers just got jacked up on Redbull, E and acid, then tossed on stage to do whatever they feel like. The music was interesting and went well with the pieces and lighting; it was not the typical modern dance crazy tribal or gothic "churchy" music, both of which I can't stand. Unfortunately the last piece was "countryish" music, which did not fit with the rest of the show and seemed very out of place; good choreography wasted on a bad piece of music! Overall, I was very impressed with the entire presentation will definitely be back to see future Malashock shows...maybe even take modern classes after a 9 year haitus...
