Visited April 2015:
We visited the gardens, had a light lunch, walked to the Mausoleum, and then walked to his cottage. This attraction are spread out about 1 small blocks from one another, roughly 3-5 blocks total. We visited Burns Cottage, Museum, Poet's path, Auld Kirk, and Burns Monument. On the map it gives you estimated time per location. It took us 20 minutes to visit Burns Cottage, Poet's Path - 15, Auld Kirk - 5 but we did not go through the graveyard, Monument - 15, and the Museum - 30 not including lunch. The map is not to scale nor is there any cardinal directions on it, so it was a bit confusing. It is a lovely decorative map with some useful information.
The museum inside has several different artifacts during his lifetime, along with poetry being read to you, and interactive activities.
The cafe is quaint and overlooks the gardens of the museum. I purchased a soft drink, soup of the day, bottle of wine (1 glass), and fresh fruit for £11.50 ($17.45). I received a large bowl of piping hot soup made of root vegetable and large thick slices of bread. The Shiraz was fantastic, and I was provided with the correct wine glass. The apple I purchased, I ate later for a snack because the soup was filling.
After eating we walked the gardens, then the monument, and headed down the lane to the cottage. If you have been to the home of Shakespeare, cottage is quite similar. The garden is laid out strategically, and are well kept. There are benches to sit and take in the clean air and views of the surrounding area. Auld Kirk and Brig O' Doon are close by for additional gorgeous photography.
