Wow! Bravo, Roam Local! We had such a great time on our Mission/Castro tour! Being a tourist in my own city is always fun, but our tour w/ Roam Local made this experience truly memorable. My friend came to visit, and I decided to take her "off the beaten path", away from the tourist traps. Our tour guide Ryan is a true SF expert. He was so knowledgeable, and he shared many interesting and rare-facts (even my native-self didn't know these gems of knowledge and secret corners of the city). I can't wait to go on ALL of the RoamLocal tours!

Had a great time touring China town and learning unique and interesting facts about the history of San Francisco. Ryan is very personable and engaging and was fun to walk around with and share a beer and conversation.

    You start the tour here.

This last weekend, we took a tour with Ryan: Chinatown/ North Beach. It was fantastic and we will surely book a tour in the future! Highlights: -Amazing knowledge of the history and culture of SF -Incredible energy like no other I've seen -Enthusiasm for EVERYTHING -Healthy 4.0+ mile hike with minimum steps/difficulty -Beautiful weather, luckily for us! -Good crowd of about 10 (old and young) -From buildings to people to events to architecture, we learned about it all Things to think about: -Not cheap at $40 per person (but understandable for the amount your learn/walk) -Booking was a bit difficult, but it was sorted out by the time we got there -He was a bit late and we had no way of contacting him if there had been a problem I'm already looking forward to the next time we take a tour with Ryan. Check it out!

Just going to add my voice to the chorus of praises for Roam Local. I joined Ryan for his tour of the Old Waterfront and Telegraph Hill. This was my third trip to San Francisco, but it was the first time I really SAW the city, and it's all thanks to Ryan. Instantly engaging and ease-inducing, Ryan made me feel like we had been friends for ages. His pride in and love for the city are both apparent and highly contagious. I became enchanted by the "secret" stairways and parks Ryan guided us through, and the vistas that unfurled at every turn were breathtaking. His knowledge of the city's history is staggering, he effortlessly answered our abundant questions, and I appreciated his use of technology in giving us a glimpse into the golden, olden days of San Francisco. The one regret I have is that I only participated in a single tour; on future trips to the city I will definitely plan on taking more Roam Local tours. I think it's fair to say that Ryan is the best tour guide in the world, so, do yourself a favor and book a tour with him.

Well another great tour today with Ryan! We had such a wonderful day in the Marina... Perfect weather, beautiful scenery with a knowledgeable tour guide that has a contagious exuberance for SF. We loved every minute! It's hard not to be wowed by the depth and layers of rich SF history that we were given today. This is my third tour with Ryan...I'm a Bay Area native and have come away from each tour with many moments of wondering where I was!. Book in advance!! Look at my pics

Ryan is a real gem! I went on a tour with my family (parents are in their sixties) for his most physically challenging tour the four peaks. Ryan has a natural friendliness about him.. Almost like an instant bond he forms with everyone. Everywhere we go he points out the interesting facts about the neighborhood, a wall mural, an art work, the weather, history, plants, flowers and buildings... I have no idea how he remembers everything but I was really impressed. At the end of the day, this mixed crowd group had a wonderful time and Ryan made this experience a super special one, I highly recommend Ryan!

There is a siginifance of these buildings and how they played a key part in Chinatown and SF's history.

Seeing the flawless yelp reviews is what prompted my bf and me to book a tour with Roam Local. We knew it would be "good" but man oh man this went infinitely beyond our expectations. SHORT VERSION REVIEW: DO ROAM LOCAL! ITS ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES YOULL EVER HAVE TRUST ME!!! LONG VERSION REVIEW: Roam Local. To "roam" rather than to "tour"; it is an immersion into a city and its culture with an inhabitant who is passionate about the city. Do you want a bullet list of city trivia read to you while being enclosed in a muggy bus, sitting shoulder to shoulder with a stranger who constantly blocks the window? How about a walk through the city behind 20 other tourists, barely being able to hear your tour guide? No and no! Paraphrasing Rick Steves: get lost in a city! Get a true appreciation of the city you're visiting. Dont get caught in the tourist trap like Pier 39 where you see the same tourists and lame street performers youd see at any other amusement park. There is no other experience that narrates the culture and history of San Francisco the way Ryan does. Roam Local is like a really good novel whereas the typical tour is like the preview of that novel's film adaptation! The book is always better! My boyfriend and I did the Chinatown/North Beach/Russian Hill tour. Very efficiently, we covered a lot of ground all on foot. I knew there would be a lot of walking but I did not realize the extent of how hilly San Francisco is. **Make sure you stretch, hydrate, and wear walking shoes!** Again, it doesnt feel like a "tour"; its private so there is a 6 person max. The wealth of information that Ryan shared was astounding. Like other reviewers explained, he takes you to places that no other tour takes you. I say "tour" because that word is associated with "tourists" which we rarely ran into. He took us to magnificent views that even very few locals knew of. We walked down beautiful streets where you only saw locals and not other tourists with massive cameras. Every place we passed by there was an interesting story. You dont feel like a tourist. You're exploring the city and learning a lot about it by the second. Unlike other tours Ryan does not regurgitate facts from a travel book, but rather he tells you the stories of what HE researched. In addition to being extremely knowledgeable, Ryan is also very pleasant guy: funny, friendly, the type of guy that can get along with anyone. Im telling you, Roam Local is a must! I could go on and on about it but theres no way for you to know how amazing it is until you experience it yourself. You wont regret it. Im not sure what the current rates are but given your time and the unmatchable experience you're getting, YOU will be getting the deal. Book now before it gets too popular that you cant get a reservation! My next booking will be the Castro District.

It was nice to see it with the tour too and not have to worry about makes a reservation there. We promptly left at 8am. And the tour shop does have a small bathroom which is nice to use before you leave. Barry was a great tour guide, he loved taking pictures of everyone and knows a lot about San Francisco. We got out of the bus twice to take pictures on the way to Muir Woods. They were great picture stops and we head nice weather to pose in front of Golden Gate Bridge. Even though I've been to SF 5 times I still loved this tour. I've been to Sausalito before and could have skipped that, there is not much to do in that town besides eat something and look at the bay. Muir Woods is the real gem. We had only 1 hour and 15 min to explore on our own. I was alone so I walked fast and think I got to see more than most in that time. I would have liked more time there. You can add on Alcatraz and the bus drops you off there, or he can drop you at fisherman's wharf or back at the tour shop. Highly suggest this tour company! Very friendly, on time and knowledgeable!

Pros: + The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. + Once you get on the island and go through the 5 minute orientation from the NPS ranger, you're free to roam about. + The audio-guided tour is actually REALLY good. It was my first time and I thought it would be cheesy but it was engrossing and informative. + Restrooms were very clean and not crowded (at least not the guy's restroom). + There are some truly AMAZING views of the bay. Bring a travel-safe camera. Neutral: ~ There's restrictions on food and drink (only bottled water is allowed in the majority of the park). So plan ahead. ~ San Francisco traffic is real and kinda sucks. Plan ahead for delays. ~ A good portion of the park is outdoors (which isn't a negative but means that it's impacted by the weather). It gets super windy so plan ahead and dress appropriately. Cons: - The price is indeed a little high. I don't think I'd go here all the time. Once every couple years is probably fine. - A friend told me that there's a LOT of bird poop around and they were right. Once docked after a quick 15 minute trip we were welcomed by a NPS docent who gave us a quick description of the island and specific do's and don'ts. A little electric tram was provided for those who need assistance to get to the top of the facility otherwise one has to hoof and puff to the top amongst paved switchbacks equaling 13 flights of stairs. The individual tour itself was informative but be prepared for herds of people stopping and crowding on the audio tour. Personally, I recommend not utilizing the audio portion because it's too wordy plus the info boards are more than sufficient. We did enjoy our excursion but feel it was a bit pricey for what you get and understand most of the collected monies goes toward the cruise costs. For those who collect the National Park Stamps don't forget to bring your book and/or ask the cashier for the stamp.

Some of our favorite moments were actually the unexpected spots we never would've found on our own, like the beautiful, yet uncrowded overlook on Telegraph Hill. Customer service over the phone was great, the tour was awesome and we learned new things about San Francisco that we had never learned before. The views were STUNNING and the open air car was awesome. Bring a jacket, the day was perfect sunshine which is unheard of for San Francisco this time of year and I was still frozen at the end of our ride. There were just a few things that kept this from being a 5 star experience: Car condition: the breaks on this e-car literally SCREAMED each time we stopped. The car stopped with no issue, but it totally freaked us out - especially on some of the steep hills. Otherwise the car was in excellent condition and we only depleted maybe 10% of the battery in our 3 hour tour. Front desk staff: check in and out was easy enough, but the front desk staff were realllllllly indifferent. They also talked like auctioneers, crazy fast. They showed all of the folks in the office this map route and talked at the speed of light. Now, we knew about 40% of the stops we would take and still got confused. How on earth are tourists supposed to understand this map direction situation. Seriously, the company would be better off instructing the front desk to say "your car will guide you through this map" than to try to have them explain where people are going. Or at least tell guests that "this seems like a lot, but you have a map in your car and the car will guide you, we are giving you this info so that you have some of the locations in your mind". Tour Guide/GPS: the GPS/Tour Guide storyline sounded like it was for the yellow car only. There were a few times that we were thinking, this can't be referring to our car. For example, there was one steep hill decent that we were going to go on and the GPS/Tour Guide said "I'm only designed to go 25 mph, so take care down this steep hill" we couldn't tell if we were only allowed to go 25 mph or if this cars speed was capped at 25 mph, but the website says that the top speed is 80 mph. Also, we were told that this car can go across the Golden Gate Bridge and the GPS said several times that it is not allowed to go on the bridge. Overall, we had a wonderful time, the GPS worked the entire time and we learned new facts about SF and saw new things that we hadn't noticed before. We also got MANY compliments on this car and almost every group that saw us said that they want to take this car out while on their trip. This was an awesome experience and we will bring family/friends here when they visit for amazing views of the city.

So we got there and it was torture to get signed in. It took us an hour for signing in! Finally, we get in the cars, my gps didn't work well. We went a mile and had to return that car. We got another car and went on our tour. My brother's car had a hard time going up the hill (right before Lombard Street) and it had very little power and it started smoking. We had to wait for them to get to Lombard street. We went down the crookedest street then quickly returned the cars. My brother was afraid that he and my sister in law would stall or that the car would catch on fire. We ended our tour 1 hour early. Issues are the cars look used up and not well maintained. They need more workers at the front desk and car pickup area. Cars should be checked prior to customers coming to ensure they're going to work well. I think this is a GREAT idea and very fun. I was able to see more of SF because of this amazing self guided tour. The reason I didn't rate my experience as a 5 star is the wait time checking in and the car issues.
