You can pick up some good deals at EB Games during sales, though this is a rarely the case with new release games, which are always sold at RRP. You can pick up most new release games at JB Hi-Fi and Target for less, though EB Games is happy to price match most of the time. The one thing that EB Games lacks compared to stores like Gametraders, is video games for retro consoles such as the Nintendo 64 and older versions of the PlayStation, though I suppose that this is more of a niche market (which happens to be increasing).

The staff are refreshingly honest, if they're not too knowledgable about something they'll tell you, but there's usually someone on hand who knows what you need to know. The staff at Artie's know what they're talking about and are more than happy to share their expertise with you. You can go in, have a play and find out what you need to know. Their prices are competitive, and they will price match if you need it. They don't have something you want? They'll order it in for you. Bought something ages ago that needs a tune up? They also offer servicing. I get my acoustic guitar services and restrung for under $100. So they have your main instruments as well as brass and orchestral (though a smaller deletion), and recording gear. Shirts, merch and print music as well. Artie's has recently opened another store in Chermside. It has less gear but the staff are the same and I'm sure they would order in for you.

I asked the staff what should I get for a beginner and they helped guide me towards something more my level and explained the benefits and the extras I'd incur in the long run. They were awesome. That's when it hit me. I needed to save up. Sad panda.

This store isn't as big as the Salvos around the corner and doesn't sell furniture, but has a good range of clothing and shoes, as well as book and accessories. One of the regular ladies who works here will talk you ear off if you start her chatting, but they are all very friendly. There's always a bargain rack out the front to grab your attention as you walk by.

They now offer e-books for purchasing, $5 australia wide deliveries and a pretty extensive catalogue of the latest literary offerings. The staff can offer an exhaustive list of recommendations and being the oldest australian-owned bookstore you know you're in good hands.
