The Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley - Climbing wall

The Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley

I agree with the previous review - not what I would call a "Children's Museum". It is definitely a…read moregreat play place, though. Anything you could imagine that kids would love is here - dress up, grocery store, climbing wall, play house, animals, building blocks of all shapes and sizes. Even a music area and a craft table.

It costs $2 per adult and $4 per kid. If this was in Columbus and near my house, then I would get…read morea membership and use it during the winter as a play space. I would not call this place a museum in the same sense as the Pittsburgh Children's Museum. I believe the name is misleading and it should be called a play space. As a play space this place would get 4 stars but as a museum it would get one star. I averaged that and gave it 3 stars for affordability. The place is basically one big room but it has some walls to divide the space up a little. They have animal alley with a tarantula, fish, lizard, turtle, and a snake. They have a climbing wall, craft area, chalkboard, train table, and a sand table. One of the cooler stations is the lego station as they have a good collection of lego parts. They also have a station with an Ipad attached where one can video tape their actions and replay them. They have the bigger lego blocks in some small bins. They have the blue imagination blocks for constructing as well. My kids the loved the dress-up outcove the most as they have a kitchen and numerous outfits to put on. They have a small house type structure to climb steps. My 3 year old walked up it and was disappointed to not see a slide. All in all this place is a decent place to play on rainy or cold days. It is open enough to let the kids run around while one relaxes a little. Bring your own food and drink. There is a hot dog stand across the street and a restaurant on the corner. If you are traveling and need a place for kids to run around and be engaged then this place is better than the playspace at Burger King in St. Clairesville.

Oglebay Good Zoo - Indoor play area

    Oglebay Good Zoo

For what it is, Oglebay Good Zoo really is a good zoo. Is it a great zoo? I think it depends on…read morewhen you visit and what you do. If you do one of the animal encounters like my family and I did, then your experience will definitely be great. We got to go into the area where the sloth and tamarins live and feed them treats! We also got to gently pet the sloth, and watch the tamarins scurry around their living area. Tamarins are super curious and playful creatures -- they kept wanting to dangle over our heads, and they also have toys that they play with. The sloth moved about, too, but very slowly, as a sloth is wont to do. I think it's cool that two different kinds of animals, sloths and tamarins, can live together peacefully. I felt very honored to be allowed into the home they share. You can also do animal encounters with porcupines, cheetahs, bobcats, maned wolves, red pandas and other creatures. Afterward, we walked around the outdoor part of the zoo, which is on the small side. Some of the animals were out, like a pack of wolves just kickin' it in the late afternoon sun. For the most part, though, the zoo was deserted. The train was not running, the activities were closed and none of the concession stands were open. We visited in the off season, though. So if you visit during a month that is not warm, expect a desolate outdoor experience. The indoor part of the zoo is very fun for kids, though, especially young kids. There are lots of animal exhibits to see (this is where the red panda lives). There are also just lots of fun activities and toys to play with indoors. It would be a nice place to visit on a rainy day if you have a young child.

You gave us the right mix of exposure to the pandas with information about their health, their diet and just anything else we wanted to know. Thank you for answering our questions..... and thank you for a memorable day for my wife Katie who is a red panda number one fan. Well done.

WVU Outdoor Education Center - Canopy tour this-a way

Even though the things they do make my hands sweaty, I don't want to stifle their spirit or curiosity, so we often do adventurous things that I would never do when I was a young girl. One of those things was going on a zipline canopy tour in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. You're probably thinking, "That's nothing! Ziplining is perfectly safe!" And I'm sure it is, somewhat. But sometimes, I'm still that timid little girl who is afraid to get hurt. And I try to avoid doing anything that requires me to sign a waiver, wear a helmet, be strapped in by trained personnel, be high up off the ground, etc. So, yes, I was being a good mom and taking my kids to do adventurous things, but I let them have all of the adventure while I waited safely on the ground. Kids can zipline and traverse the canopy tour by themselves as long as they weigh at least 70 pounds. They also have to be able to make it the whole two hours of the tour. When we visited, it was very cold, and even colder once you get high up in the trees. If you visit on a cold day, bring some thin gloves and a beanie! The people who do the tours are students at West Virginia University. The three students we encountered on our tour were super knowledgeable and good with kids. They made sure my kids had all of their safety gear on correctly, showed them the basics, made sure they understood how to zipline safely, showed them what to do if they got stuck in the middle of a zipline (ay, dios mio!) and checked in with them throughout the tour. I felt like safety was of the utmost importance to them, which I appreciated. The canopy tour consisted of four zip-lines, seven platforms up in the trees, an aerial bridge, aerial ladder and a rappel station to exit the course. It was a fun time! No one died or fell and became paralyzed. (I mean, what kind of paranoid sicko would even think that sort of thing?!) The only thing I would do differently is visit on a warmer day. At the end, my oldest child said he couldn't feel his fingers and he was actively shivering. So, visiting on a warm day would probably make the experience a lot more enjoyable.

Before we embarked on the ziplines, we did a small, low-to-the-ground practice course. The guides made sure we all knew their hand signals and how to brake. Then, we did three ziplines, each one a little more adventurous than the last. We ended by stepping off a 45-foot platform, with the guides lowering us down on a cable. My kids (ages 12 and 14) had a blast. My husband and I loved it too. It was a great family adventure.
