With…read morehourly 50/50s, one last mega 50/50, and plenty of games, there are a lot of ways to win and have fun while supporting your local church. The beer garden, which cards at the entrance, also has cold beer for $4 or $5 including Miller Lite, Yuengling, and an IPA. The rides are always fun, with large and small Ferris wheels, the Pharoh's fury (swinging ship), the Gravitron, swings, a giant slide, the Merry-Go-Round, etc. In recent years, they've replaced all of the upside down rides that used to be there, such as the Zipper and Spin Out (much to my disappointment). Lines are much better on weekdays, and tickets are half price if you buy them during the pre-sale. There's plenty of food to eat, such as panzarottis (giant pizza rolls), burgers, dogs, fries, pizza, etc. There's an Italian night and a Polish night too, where foods from these countries are featured. There's so much to do, and if nothing else, it's always fun to people watch here too!

OMG ... FEST is the BEST!! DH is 7/8ths German and we've both lived in the area all our lives even…read moregoing to college in the city ... but we never heard of this ever. Just happened to catch it on the Saturday news and picked up our (drinking-aged son) to head over on Sunday. We arrived around 3pm (a few hours after noon opening) and there was no parking for blocks ... as their small lot was closed and only street parking was available. We circled around a bit and was lucky to find someone leaving in the next block. Entrance fee of $10pp ... then off to buy tickets for food/drinks walking past some vendors (yes, DH got an awesome fest t-shirt). Ticket booths at front and back sold $0.50 tix (all food/drinks need tickets, not cash) ... but we didn't realize (until we were leaving) that only the front booth also took credit cards. Each tix book has 20 tickets and costs $10 ... where they recommend 2 books per person to start and you can always get more later. With our tickets in hand, we got in line for beer and promptly discovered they sold out of the refillable liter mugs (which we all wanted to get with different beers). So, we opted for the pitcher of Schofferhofer (32 tix) as my family was nice enough to concede to my choice. We found a nice picnic table under the trees right behind the potato pancake stand and immediately got an order which came with 3 perfect pancakes (10 tix). Boy were they tasty ... we ended up taking 2 more orders home at the end of the day too! We also got the schnitzel and the bratwurst sandwich to share, where both came sauerkraut and potato salad ... all super yummy! The grounds are fairly large with plenty of space for the large number of people at seating near the front where we were, more pic tables along the perimeters, and also under the huge fest-styled rows of tables under the tent with live music. We continued our eating parade by getting hackbraten (meatloaf), bee sting cake, funnel cake, and a slushie (unfortunately non-alcoholic). What a wonderful day (even in the heat) and we plan to go back next year with as many friends as we can round up to drink beers and eat food with!

It was a life-changing experience in many good ways, and I also fell in love with good German beer and good German food. Over the years since there's been more 'internationalization' of American cuisine, such that now it's easy to find bratwursts in the grocery store and schnitzel on menus. It's 'americanized' though, which is typical. Same with beer, since my trip more 'brands' have become available, though nothing like the hyper-local beer I had, still decent and sometimes very good brews. I've known about the Volksfest for a few years now, however I didn't have the opportunity to go. This year not only did I have time, but dear fellow Yelper Jessica W as my Fest partner, and she was experienced too, so I had an idea what to expect. YESSSS! Understand, this is a BIG festival. We got there a couple hours after opening and parked about 2 blocks away, everything closer was completely full. It was a decent day though and the walk was nice, so no problem. There is an admission fee - $6, pretty cheap. The experience: Some very nice vendor stalls offering steins, shirts, pins, pint glasses, cookbooks, etc. They had a beer tent, featuring Warsteiner beers but also with others as well as wine. There was a tent featuring things like bratwurst, hot dogs, etc. Skip it, people. The real gem was the tent - near the rear of the festival - with German cuisine. Things like Leberkase, which I love, and authentic schnitzel. New to me and definitely one of my new favorites was Maultaschen, which is described as a German meat-filled ravioli, but really isn't, more of a layered flat-spatzle and savory meat roll, and it was *really* good. That with a lovely glass of Warsteiner Pils and I was in my happy food place. Seriously, people, skip the brat tent and head to this one. Yes, more expensive and totally completely worth it. We also got 'bee cake', which is a divine custard cake with almonds, moist but not falling apart, not overly sweet but yum. They had other very nice looking desserts like berry crumble and strudel. Also the ubiquitous funnel cake. We dined under a very large tent where there was alternately a German traditional music band and members of the Frankford String Band performing, there was a dance floor and people were getting up and cutting a rug. Lastly, for kids, there are some rides. Things to know: *Everything is cash-only. Buying food and beer involves first buying a coupon book that you then use to buy items. For example, 12 coupons for a 16 ounce beer. *They have an ATM inside their hall if you don't have cash. *There are regular bathrooms and port-a-potties. *The bar inside the club is also open, so you can enjoy beer and spirits in air conditioned comfort with stools and whatever sports game on their TVs. *There are nicer bathrooms near the bar. *Come hungry, and don't be afraid to Uber. The beer is awesome and the parking is difficult. :) YES of COURSE I'm going again. UYE 2019, anyone?

They also have weekly activities and seasonal events for elementary school kids.
