At this point I am not going to review the services offered by Hebrew Home. I am giving it 1 star based on the following. When your loved one is placed at Hebrew Home, whatever benefits your loved one is receiving goes to the nursing home (this is understandable). Hebrew Home will then place a $50.00 monthly allowance into a "personal account" for the resident for things such as haircuts, or for the purchase of other items/necessities that may be available through different vendors. BEWARE: In the event that your loved one passes away DO NOT attempt to claim any existing/leftover funds from your loved ones "personal account" directly from Hebrew Home. DO NOT tell Hebrew Home that the funeral has been fully paid for as they will send the funds from that "personal account" to the Public Administrator. Have the funeral home send an invoice to Hebrew Home and then have the funds distributed to you. When I tried to recover the funds from my loved ones "personal account", Hebrew Home told me that "by law" those funds had to be returned to The Office of The Public Administrator. Personally, I believe that "law" was designed to appropriate those funds. I now believe that this law was designed so that the city/county/municipality/state can stay with your loved ones money. Hebrew Home will never tell you this, but I will and I have. BEWARE....Where the law exists the trap or trick exists!!! read more

DO NOT TAKE ANYONE YOU LOVE HERE! It is the most horrible facility I have ever seen. It is dirty, unkept and unsafe and bug infested. My useless social worker at Lawrence Hospital coordinated inpatient care for her at this facility after a she experienced a bad fall. I was disgusted and ended up taking her back to the hospital within 90 minutes of her arrival. She was considered a fall risk yet Gabriel, the RN on duty left her sitting g in a chair unattended for over an hour when she arrived by medical transport from the hospital. Lola, the floor supervisor of GP, tried her best to help but between the condition of the place and the lack competent staff,, she cannot be effective manager. Such a shame for patients without an advocate to be placed here. Honestly this facility needs to closed. read more

My mother-in-law has been living at The Hebrew Home's Riverwalk, their independent living residence for the last four years. While it's hard to imagine how difficult it is for active elderly people to give up their homes and move into a " retirement facility ", thanks to their dedicated director, Regina Wallace and her colleague, Katherine Murphy Dedde , Riverwalk provides a wonderful environment where residents can participate in wonderful lectures, activities and even luxuriate in a very classy movie theater that was donated by Ben Stiller in honor of his parents. I have been very impressed by the staff who lead classes in everything from discussions on what's happening in the news , exercise groups, to musical singalongs. The apartments of varying sizes, have beautiful views overlooking the Hudson River. Whenever I have dropped in to see my beloved mother-in-law, I have been greeted by friendly and empathetic staff , who sit at the front desk offering all the concierge services of a classy apartment-complex. My wife and I have occasionally received calls at night from Anthony who keeps an eye on all the residents and has at times reached out to us, when my " Mom" has needed extra attention. As a result we have always felt secure and comforted by the 24 hour care that is provided by all of the people who work there. Breakfast and dinner are provided in a gorgeous dining room that overlooks the Hudson River and the New Jersey coastline. And they even have a small store where the residents can buy supplies and food. Before we chose Riverwalk, we visited many independent retirement homes but we were impressed with the reputation of The Hebrew Home and how if we needed more care, she could be moved to their rehabilitation facility as well as their nursing home. My "Mom" has made many wonderful friends and now, she feels that she only wished she moved in sooner, since her life has become much easier and she continues to benefit from Riverwalk's wonderful amenities! read more

I had a similar experience as others. My mom lived in their independent housing called Riverwalk for about 7 years. It was good, lots of activities. A few drawbacks but nothing too major. Then she fell and had a compound wrist fracture which landed her in the hospital and rehab in the nursing home right across the way from her apartment. Rehab floor was not great but it was pretty good. We never worried about leaving her there alone. Then came the day in which her rehab benefits were gone. She couldn't return to her apartment as she was no longer independent so they moved her into permanent care one floor above the rehab floor. It was a nightmare. They warehoused their charges. The aides ruled the roost. Supervisors were non-existent; social worker was never there; nursing supervisor was never there; it was noisy; patients lived in fear of retribution. She wasn't there a week when we knew we had to make a change. We fast tracked her out of there and moved her to a facility in Colorado, near one of my sisters. The day my sister and I packed her bags and took her to the airport was the best day ever - we felt like we were escaping a gulag or defecting from North Korea. Mom lived another six months. That was six months during which I only saw her twice after never being more than one hour away my entire life. Mom's life got complicated because of her age, physical condition and injury, but Hebrew Home was in a position to help her, not discard her. In all of my years of being her daughter, what brings me to tears over and over again is that moment that my sister and I left her in that god-forsaken place. My wife spent 17 days here in sub-acute rehab. Contact is mostly with aides and nurses and all of them were lovely. Many are not native English speakers so some miscommunication is common, but a smile and politeness will get you what you need. Administrative staff is friendly and efficient. Better food than at most rehabs i am told. And the grounds are gorgeous with a fabulous sculpture garden overlooking the Hudson, so get your loved one outside. i.e. visit! Plenty of very good art to look at inside as well, plus fish tanks, bird cages, concerts, crafts, library. Having someone you love in a nursing home or rehab center is a stressful event, especially if they are coming from a hospital where the level of care is much more intensive. But the Hebrew Home is a transition between hospital and the next step, and its a wake-up call. This place does it really well. Mark Spilkowitz read more

In days/years gone by, the reputation was such better. Old friends of mine encouraged me to place my mom there. I should have read the reviews more carefully. You'd think with all the ads on radio it had a good reputation. NOT TRUE. Worst part is the management (Nursing Dept. and Administration). They are all too busy covering their tracks to prevent them from being fired. My calls to them and even meetings resulted in nothing being done. Then the ones (a few) who wish to make a difference, are shut down and usually somehow disappear. Perhaps they should use more of their marketing money for more competent care and managers and administrators who know what they are doing. read more

It is always difficult to have your loved one moved to a nursing home. However. if necessary, perform your due diligence and research each facility very carefully, paying attention to reviews, especially if there is an inordinate number of negative ones. In the case of the Hebrew Home, there are some very caring staff. However. overall the level of care and oversight is not very good, necessitating family members to be vigilant and to be strong advocates for their loved ones. If not,, your family member will not receive the attention to their personal, and at times, to their medical needs. Engage the Social Worker and Physician involved in your family member's care and if not responsive escalate your needs to their superiors. If their rooms are not being maintained with an appropriate level of cleanliness, report it to their supervisors. Be aware, that the food served at the Hebrew Home is generally not appealing and not very nutritious, a common complaint from many residents. Most importantly, if any staff member is not collaborative, cavalier or dismisses your legitimate complaints, it is imperative that you immediately discuss the specific issues with a senior officer of the facility. Although the Hebrew Home receives a great deal of positive press, has beautiful landscaped grounds and has nicely appointed rooms, overall I, as well as other family members I have spoken with, rate the overall services and quality of care low. read more

The level of hostility, bigotry, and callousness displayed toward us, who obviously were in the horrible and painful situation of having to place an elder, was shocking. You will hear that this is the best nursing home/rehab center in NYC. If that's true, I plan to lobby for legalizing assisted suicide before I'm old enough to wind up someplace similar. A family member was admitted here for sub-acute rehab. This period was a living hell, unbelievably stressful for the family, and near-disastrous medically for her. A couple of aides were wonderful, caring, almost saintly. But they were the exception, and HH is chronically understaffed. Long, long waits for help with toilet, personal care, and pain meds. We had to hire an outside aide (at great cost) to stay with her overnight; otherwise, she was receiving almost no care at night. She was not the only patient with a paid aide. If you ever had to comfort an elderly person--diapered, ignored, and in unrelieved pain--you would do the same, no matter how much it cost. Nursing staff is mixed, with some responsive, some clueless, and one who was so cruel that we had her barred from contact with the patient. The computerized medication system is byzantine, and I saw many mistakes made in that area. There were two doctors for the whole unit, and neither were accessible, sympathetic, or even familiar with the patients. They minimized or actively dismissed every concern. The social worker never answered her phone, never returned messages, and met with the family only upon discharge. No one ever, EVER, answered the phone at the nurses' station. Physical and occupational therapy were bright spots. The PTs and OTs were excellent, almost across the board. The food is bland and sad, with a dearth of fresh fruits and vegetables. (Except for one memorable period right before a government inspection: Then, suddenly, the food director was running around distributing strawberries--my God, strawberries!--and listening to residents' suggestions. After the inspection, it went back to normal, as did the staffing levels, which had been briefly improved.) Part of the problem is organizational: No one seems to be in charge. The patient was ignored upon admission, with neither medicine nor food/water for many hours until we complained. It took days and days to be evaluated for PT and OT, and she was confined to wheelchair/bed until then. Had to wait for days for the most basic things: a diabetic menu, a walker, an air mattress (she left with more bedsores than she arrived with), diabetic foot care (that one took weeks and had serious, long-lasting effects). The level of red tape at every level fills me with rage, just thinking about it. You may think I'm exaggerating, but I have pages of detailed notes from every day of her stay. I don't know how Hebrew Home has maintained such a great reputation, except that there are other units there, some for assisted living, that are quite luxurious. Oh, and the grounds are beautiful. Ironic, isn't it, that they seem to lavish more care on the trees than on the humans inside? read more

I wish I was able to dispute what the other reviewers said. My mother is a resident of the Hebrew home. I selected it because it is known as the best facility in New York City. Frankly, I'm afraid to move her as I fear every place else will be even worse. I visit frequently in the hopes that my presence will encourage the staff to treat her better. My mother needs help to go to the bathroom. It is clear that the staff would rather have her sit in a dirty diaper then take her to the bathroom. Once when I was there, I asked them to take her to the bathroom. I was told that they had just taken her. i told them that it was pretty clear to me that she needed to go. The aide asked me if I had checked to see if her diaper was dirty before she begrudgingly took her to the bathroom. I've seen the way that several of the aides work with her. And some are very rough and uncaring. For people paying privately, the cost of the Hebrew home runs somewhere between $23,000 and $25,000 per month. Let me repeat that --- this is per month. Medicaid reimbursement rates are at the very top of the range. At that rate, you'd think that they would be able to take the people to the bathroom and hire staff that was caring and kind. When she entered the Hebrew home, I was told that we would have frequent meetings with the staff to discuss her care plan. We had one meeting since she moved to a permanent placement. I have not heard from anyone since even though I am there frequently. It seems that the staff has a very high turnover rate.I was also given everybody's direct telephone number. I thought that was pretty excellent. However, not once has any of those numbers ever been answered. And, when I call her floor, no one has ever called me back even when I've left messages and requested a callback. Normally, I would go to the administration at the Hebrew home to discuss these issues. However, when I raised one issue several months ago, I felt pretty strongly that they had taken it out on my mother. As I said earlier, I would move her, however, I'm told everyplace else is even worse. read more

I can never forgive myself for allowing my mother to live at RiverWalk, the independent living facility at the Hebrew Home for the Aged. The grand tour was very impressive, but also misleading. I was horrified to find that RiverWalk did not even have a social worker on staff--since it's not required by state law. Nobody mentioned that when they showed me the Social Worker's office at the rehab center. An oversight? I hired a aide through their ElderCare office to help my mother dress and bathe at 8 AM every morning. One morning, my mother failed to answer the door. The aide simply walked away and submitted her bill. My mother had suffered a stroke, and was found on the floor by the cleaning lady at 10:30 AM. She was admitted to the hospital and died 48 hours later. read more

I concur. The facility is lovely but I don't know where they find the staff. Most are openly hostile without provocation or simply don't care and the minority who do care are a definite minority. I have a friend who is a long term resident and on two occasions while visiting I was accosted by a truly hostile aide for merely politely asking a question, later was given "the evil eye," whilst waiting for the elevator as she sat chatting with her friends. I did not address the behavior because in this sort of environment it's best to be nice and avoid confrontation in order to prevent whatever you say to be taken out on the patient that you are visiting. On another occasion, I called the main number because I did not have my friend's phone number with me. The operator searched for literally 10 minutes and could not find my friend's name in the directory and eventually told me to contact a family member. As one writer wrote in a review. Assisted suicide is a better alternative than Hebrew Home, unless something can be done with the staff. read more

The worst possible place to put a loved one. My father was there for six months well his health deteriorated rapidly. Ultimately me, the daughter had to figure out that hospice needed to be called. Getting that accomplished took a lot and thankfully we decided and were able to get him out and bring him there the day before he died Staff is incompetent and in way over their heads. This Review is for RiverSpring Home care management (for seniors living in their own home) My mother lives at home with room mates. I travel out of state for work and am not at home to take care of her. My mom is 92 and has declined quickly after Covid. She needs 24 hour 7 days a week care. She can't walk without assistance and needs to be turned or moved every 2 hours because of her bedsores. She has a broken tailbone and just had a heart attack. My mom needed a long term management care company. ONLY RiverSpring sent a nurse to see and evaluate my mother in person. Every other company evaluated my mother over the phone or Zoom. Nurse Jessica Rivera sat with us for three hours. She waited to see if my mother could move and what kind of assistance she needed. She spoke with her and looked in her eyes. She returned a second time to re-evaluate her after she asked me to send photos of bedsores. She urged me immediately to get her to the doctor in person. She gave us insight and empathy even before their service has started. Right now Visiting Nurses Service in New York is our temporary service. But Jessica Rivera is head and shoulders above them. She's awesome. She didn't rely on "The Formula" that Village Care Max did . They didn't see my mother at all but decided that this woman who couldn't do one thing for herself and is bedridden only needed assistance 5 hours a day five days a week. Huh????. They claimed they used a formula to get to those hours without ever seeing my mother's state. Literally, when we met Jessica Rivera and saw her empathy, brilliance and care it was enough to bring tears to my eyes. Finally, after all the months of feeling scared and grieving about my mothers health, I no longer felt alone. I felt like I had a professional partner in my mother's care, someone who could not only give us all the information we needed to move forward and help my mom, but also someone who cared deeply. She talked to my mom and laughed with her, appreciated her, looked at her and dealt with her as a person - with worth. Others have made my mother feel as if she was insignificant- too deaf, losing her mind, incontinent. But now Jessica sees my mom as a whole person, deserving of dignity. I would be very careful about sending a loved one to Hebrew Home. I read how they started in 1917 in a synagogue in Harlem for the poor, immigrants,sick and elderly. Who would think that they would put money over people's lives. My brother is an amputee, who is caught in between the insurance company who Hebrew Home said refuses to pay, but he could stay if he likes, if he can come up with the money, and of course he can't do that....... read more

My mother works at the Hebrew home and it is amazing.Every employe is kind they help me get lunch in the cafe.They let me use their piano and have food in multiple places.There is a train which is very entertaining to watch.There is also a outside area and play area.Shout out to everyone single employe from ones I consider my friends to ones I do not.I completely recommend this amazing place if you know anyone suffering from elder abuse. read more

Good home unfair comments from people who never visit mom or dad or just once in a while when they feel guilty , i watch the staff and they are very kind and the Home is great they have bingo and even a overnight programs for night owls, the security outside is good they check all IDs from cars coming in and out, the elevator you need to punch a code to use it on the floor with the patients that have no idea who or where they are, they however are under staffed and patients can roam in and out of other rooms which is not good IMO. read more

Abusive. Nursing facilities have a bad rep for being abusive, and the only difference between this one and the others is: -It's a half-degree less abusive, *on the surface* Here's a list of things I've witnessed: 1. CNA's threatening to hurt elderly patients 2. CNA's treating patients like stupid, errant children 3. Social Workers and Nurses invalidating every single concern a patient and/or family member might raise, including laughing and telling you the patient is lying 4. Social Workers turning your concerns against you, so if you dare raise a concern, they'll use it against you, to make your life harder CNA's retaliating againts patients, if they dare raise a concern 5. Admin staff screaming at patients & families about $$$ -If these people were competent, they'd get jobs in better places. The precious few people who are kind/decent/competent are few and far between. I've also seen fecal matter/urine left around, roaches, disgusting meals, televisions left blaring loudly in the middle of the night while people are trying to sleep (matches the workers who yell in the middle of the night)- -$$$ is why these places exist. They do not care about your loved one, and they don't care about you, except insofar as avoiding a lawsuit. They want your $, and exist to take your $, and will give minimal, sub-par care, in exchange. -Do yourself and your loved one a favor: ****Unless it's a life or death situation, and they need 24-hour, round the clock care, or they will literally die****, DO NOT PUT ANYONE IN A NURSING FACILITY. So it is important to understand that the Hebrew Home consists of several different facilities: Skilled Nursing/Nursing Home, Inpatient Subacute Rehab, Assisted Living, and Independent Living (Riverwalk). My Mom has been in Riverwalk for just over a year. It is not perfect but nothing is. The staff is excellent (another reviewer mentioned Regina Wallace and Katie - they are both outstanding professionals who go way above and beyond). The food is decent - nothing outstanding but decent. The rest of the staff ... the maintenance staff (Ricardo), the cleaning staff, even the security guards (imagine your worst image of a security guard and then envision the exact opposite because that's what they have ... friendly, accommodating, helpful security guards) ... are a cut above. My Mom has a personal relationship with the woman who cleans her apt - they hug and kiss when they greet. There are activities and they have transportation that will take you to local doctors and shopping. The grounds are beautiful making for a great atmosphere during the warmer months. I do not have any experience with the skilled nursing facility so I can't dispute what others here say about it. My Mom did have an experience with inpatient rehab. I defy you to find a rehab facility that you would rate a 10 out of 10. With that said, the Riverspring Rehab facility is very good and I would recommend it. You will find issues, and you will be frustrated at times. But all in all, it was a positive experience. Especially the PT/OT staff who are excellent. They managed to get my 95 y/o Mom back to being pretty mobile after suffering two fractured femurs and I am absolutely convinced that she would never have been able to accomplish the level of recovery that she did without that skills, devotion and dedication of the rehab staff. read more

My father was at the Hebrew Home -- initially for rehab, which was quite good, and from which he benefited greatly. But then he exhausted his rehab. coverage and decided to stay on in the nursing home facility. He was 97, and frail. Although I'd read the negative reviews of the Hebrew Home's nursing care, I really couldn't credit them. After all, it had such a stellar reputation! Well, my father was subject to what amounted to chronic neglect at the Hebrew Home's nursing care facility. We hired a personal aide, and in three days out of four the aide arrived at 10:30 a.m. to find my father in a soiled diaper. When I brought this to the nursing supervisor's attention, the solution that was announced was that our personal aide would no longer be allowed to care for my father. Yes, that was the solution to the problem, and the Home was adamant about this. My father had diarrhea and yet they had him on laxatives. (This to me seems almost a criminal offense.) I had to argue very hard to get him off the laxatives, and even then I was told that once he was no longer incontinent, the laxatives would be restored (because elderly people are prone to constipation, I was told). In addition, he was assigned a room-share with a man who had a chronic cough. The staff hadn't thought to investigate that cough before moving my father in. My father picked up this cough (it was bronchitis) and ended up so sick between the cough and the dehydration caused by the laxatives/diarrhea that he was sent to Columbia Presbyterian. Which proved a blessing in disguise as it allowed me to arrange for him to be admitted at a far better nursing home: The Methodist Home for Rehabilitation and Nursing, on Manhattan College Parkway. The difference in quality of care is enormous. At the Hebrew Home, my father was so sickly he could scarcely speak on the phone. Now he has stamina and is a far healthier individual. Yes, there are occasional issues at the Methodist Home, but still, it is just the difference between day and night, between here and the Hebrew Home. The staff at the Methodist Home are caring and attentive. It's a much smaller facility. They actually answer their phones (shocking, after the fact that at the Hebrew Home you always left a message and would be phoned back . . . the next day . . . or the next week . . . or never). And the proof of their excellent care is that my father has put on weight, has stamina, is not in soiled underthings, and is walking better than he has in a long time. I thank God for the Methodist Home. It saddens me to have to write this review, as I grew up loving the Hebrew Home. I was a candystripper there in high school and my grandmother lived her last days there. It's true the grounds are exquisite and they have a good art collection. And the name inspires a sentimental pang. But the care in the nursing home facility is terribly disappointing. I would not send a loved one there. I recalled the negative reviews I'd read on Yelp, and the fact that someone wrote that her happiest day was getting her parent out of the Hebrew Home. I have often, often thought of that review. "I hear you, sister," I want to tell that reviewer now. I am relieved my father is no longer in that facility. read more

If you're at all concerned about security, and anyone considering the Hebrew Home or similar type facility for a person diagnosed with Alzheimer's should be, then forget about this place. They will put a security device called wanderguard on their wrist. Unfortunately it is easily removable for a person who is in early stage, And today my wife escaped. Today like every other holiday or weekend staffing is even lower than normal. And their attention to patients is even less. And unfortunately, I would have to agree with the staff assessments that others have made. The management touts their many years of experience. It sure doesn't show in any positive manner. I personally visited no less than 10 other facilities in the NY metro area. And as others have said, this is the best of a lot of bad choices. read more

My mom who is 74yrs old entered this nursing home /rehab facility 2 weeks ago to arrive to her own private room and bathroom, everything has been nice and no foreseen problems, she just had a room change to a semi-private still not bad and a assessment meeting with the both of us as it pertains to her after care, my mom has told me she would like to stay longer if her insurance would allow, she has had shoulder surgery and rehab 3 times a day is a plus making sure all medications and food are taken on time everyday has been a tremendous help to her, the staff is mostly friendly and competent and as well as her doctor, I have nothing bad to say other than they have fish often so I bring my mom soul food sometimes I don't want to interfere with her diet ..lol read more

My mother was admitted to rehab at the Hebrew Home where she benefited greatly. The problem is that one of the aides there solicited my sister and brother to forgo the possibility of long term care for a health care agency (such solicitation is against the HH rules) and my siblings unfortunately believed the horror stories of that aide, never considering that the aide was likely receiving a kickback for the referral. She connected my sister and brother to a middle-man who coordinated with the agency. Now that my mother is home it appears that her aide from that agency is abusing her, and my mother is too afraid to say anything. It is a scary situation. One key to the HH is for family members, if possible, to be as present and proactive as possible. I found that even though my calls to staff were not always returned, when I went back to the HH I noticed that most of my requests were honored. I was given a reasonable explanation for those that were not. If you are a sibling and/or health care proxy, you can ask the nurse on duty for the weekly reports on your relative. This will enable you to see what is being done for your loved one daily and you can comment and ask for changes. I also hired a family friend to spend the day with my mother, once a week, and she would tell me what she saw while caring for her. (She never told me anything negative about the facility and the people working there. In fact, her feedback was always positive and she sent me a number of photos of my mother smiling and happy. I experienced the same thing whenever I would visit.) Additionally, family members and friends would visit at night, even over night, and during the day. I realize however, that no matter how caring and well-meaning, some people are not in the position to do that. My mother always gave me positive feedback on staff. While some have questioned the medical staff at the HH, I have found that the biggest problem may be the aides (while a number are very good, or good, others can be horrible). But there is supervision at the HH and you can complain. (Just make sure your complaint is confidential in case the aide hears about it and is tempted to retaliate.) It can get even trickier with home health aides because they can lie to you on the phone while offering inferior care and abusing your loved one when alone with him or her at home. I found this especially problematic for aides that work 24/7 (no matter how experienced). One reason may be that they are only paid for 13 of the 24 hours per day they are at the house. (My understanding is that Medicaid pays for 13 not 24.) This can be tenuous in the long run if your loved one is up at night and tends to wander, or needs additional care during the night. Whether your loved one is at home or in a long-term care facility, it is important to be hands-on, watchful and visit as much as possible, if possible. read more

My father was a patient at Hebrew Home for two weeks during August 2015, receiving restorative PT after having a left knee replacement. The Physical Therapy Department was very productive with therapists and assistants who really encouraged my dad and would not allow him to stray from task and insisted on working through the pain (so he would be more successful and independent when he returned home). The care he received on his unit, 3rd floor of Resnick Building, was terrific. He was treated with dignity and when he requested certain food and beverage preferences, and pain medications, his needs were met. Many of his personal care assistants were especially kind. One man, Steve, who has worked at HH for over 25 years, comes to mind as being especially attentive and caring. If this sounds more like a review of a resort than a rehab facility...then you might understand why I was moved to write my first review for Yelp on the Hebrew Home in Riverdale. My second foot surgery is a matter of days away and while I am not looking forward to that...my rehab stay to get me prepared for walking post-surgery is actually something I am looking forward to after such a positive experience when I had a similar procedure on my other foot a few months ago. The staff is incredible. This includes everyone from the thearpist to the aides who take you to the bathroom, help you bathe and check on you night and day. My room was kept so beautifully that I half expected to find a mint on the pillow of my perfectly made bed when I returned from therapy. There's tons of sunlight and the view from the Hudsn River is straight from an I LOVE NEW YORK postcard. And, are you ready? The food was really good. Suzanne G read more

Recently, my eighty-seven year old mom fell and needed rehabilitation at a nursing home. After hearing wonderful reports about Hebrew Home for the Aged in Riverdale, we decided upon that place. The highly professional security, admissions, and 3rd floor staff were all knowledgeable, efficient, and extremely sympathetic to our personal concerns and mom's needs. They sensed our fears, anxiety and overall strange feeling of leaving our mom in an unfamiliar place. They reassured all of us that she was in a safe place for excellent rehab and to prepare for returning home! The well-lit private room, television, refrigerator, shower, comfy furnishings, and water view far exceeded our expectations and visits to other nursing homes. Mom's rehab services were top notch. The physical and occupational therapy departments and therapists were superior. Phone calls and meetings with staff kept us informed of her progress. Mom took advantage of the wonderful "perks" offered during her stay. Nails polished, hair styled, concerts, and art classes were enjoyed tremendously. The cafe was an added bonus for coffee while conversing with loved ones visiting. Family visits were encouraged at HH. Mom was proud to show her favorite spots, including the Yankee and Giants Memorabilia Rooms. These collections stirred up her personal younger days at the actual stadiums and her fantastic sports knowledge. Mom also enjoyed showing the grandchildren/great grandchildren the train replica, kids' playroom and sprawling lawn overlooking the magnificent Hudson River. One of her favorite visits was when a staff member brought the "therapy" dog, Max. She quickly contacted family members to tell them about that heartwarming experience. So our initial fear, anxiety and tears at admissions became tears of joy on discharge day. This professional team, facility and services made the world of differences to our aging mom. She left in great spirits and tip top shape, for an 87 year old! We can't thank the Hebrew Home for the Aged enough for getting our mom to return to her apartment and Independent Living! I was disheartened to read a negative review about this facility. My mother-in-law was a resident at Resnick Pavilion (5th Fl.) until she passed last year. Our family's experiences were positive. The nursing staff was responsive and attentive to her needs and our requests. When we took her on a short trip from the facility, they would willingly help get her ready ; gave her a fresh change even though she did not need one. Staff knew her habits...what she liked and disliked. On the last days of her life...the staff was there to give our family support, checked to make sure we were accommodated. They gave privacy to our family to be alone with her. There were religious prayers and counseling for our family for the final outcome. Some staff gave us hugs and expressed their condolences to our family. We would never forget that. We agree with another reviewer on the theft issue. We did not report the theft because it was hard to pinpoint when the item was taken. Since that incident... we didn't leave any item that we would regret if it would be missing. Recreation activities on the floor were minimal. I only saw a staff member playing trivia with the residents once. A friend of our family visited her every Wednesday and she agreed with us that residents would mostly be left to congregate in front of the TV. Some residents that were capable of doing more would be taken down to the art room. There were performances every week. Residents would be transported to these events It was not difficult to arrange meetings with the staff. We were able to include a phone conference with our family member who lived in another state also. I feel bad to hear horrible stories that happened to other reviewers. I hope staff from the Hebrew Home would tried to correct these and maintain the quality care and compassion that we all expect to receive. read more

I have had so many bad experiences with nursing homes that I was reluctant to send my dad to any nursing home. I finally was convinced by the doctors at Montefiore Wakefield, which I think are in cohoots with this nursing home, to send my dad with a PICC line to finish his antibiotics and then I can bring him home. Well not only did they not take care of PICC line. When I checked his pamper he almost had a huge stage 1 Ulcer for lack of change. The Nurse Beena John was unhelpful, distracted, even left the medication cabinet keys in the room. She realized like a 1/2 hour later and was frantically looking for them. She and other staff members were unattentive when I spoke to them. I just called 911 and took him to a hospital. If you love your parents don't send them here. So disappointing since the facility is a nice facility but their staff needs to go. read more

I had terrible anxiety about being admitted to a rehab facility after a difficult surgery for multiple left hip fractures. My anxiety was quickly abated by the warmth and caring admission by the staff. They assessed my needs, helped me get settled and certainly made me feel at home. The physical layout of the facility is beautiful. My room had a lovely view of the Hudson River. The doctors, nurses and nurse aids could not have been more attentive and kinder as they got to know my preferences. But I was there for rehab and the physical therapy department was spectacular. They evaluated me for a plan of care and implemented the delivery of this care in a most professional manner. With their encouragement, I began to believe there was light at the end of the tunnel, and that I would walk again. I went from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane and was able to go home after four weeks, walking carefully with a cane, but independently. A wide variety of programs were offered but I enjoyed sitting outside on the banks of the Hudson the most. The live music performances made my time there especially memorable. Requiring physical therapy is many times out of our control. However, if one does need rehabilitation, Hebrew Home by River Spring was "just what the doctor ordered". read more

I was a patient at the Hebrew Home last summer for short term rehabilitation after breaking my hip. It was my first experience at a nursing home and I was so impressed with the facility and the employees. The staff were truly professional; in particular those in the rehabilitation and nursing departments. They take you on the grand tour and everything looks great. Art on the walls, music, art classes, library, dining room, performances, etc. What they do not show you is the actual floors where a person in a nursing home would live if they had difficulty getting around, like my mother. First off, the staff is mostly rude and unresponsive. The ward had an odor of urine and poop from the poorly-cared for residents who were forced to wear diapers because the understaffed nurses and aides claimed they did not have enough help to allow the residents regular use of the bathroom facilities. Elderly wheel chair-bound residents were allowed a bathroom visit once in the morning and once at night. Otherwise you just had to sit with dirty diapers all day. The halls are lined with residents parked in chairs who just sit there all day. We bought our Mother an iPad so she could keep in touch and read books. There was no w-fi to speak of, so we had to buy one of the more expensive models with cellular data access. After about three weeks of her arrival the iPad was stolen by one of the staff from her bedside stand in the middle of the night while she slept. As far as we know there was never a formal investigation. The management claimed that there were no security cameras at that part of the hallway. Because many residents are Medicaid patients they are at their mercy. My mom underwent a few weeks of physical therapy when she first arrived and was told there was nothing more they could do for her. In reality Medicaid would not pay for any additional work. Worse, other possessions were regularly missing from my mom's room. At one point some new clothes I bought for her disappeared and my mom claims she saw a nurse wearing an item of hers. The food is bad. The "dining room" looks like a junior high school Rec room. The medical coverage is even more questionable. There is one Physician for a large number of elderly residents, who basically passes everything off to a Physicians assistant who is 26 years old and totally inexperienced in elder care. My mom found herself at Hebrew Home after a stay in the hospital from previously-named Hyatt Classic Residence up the street (now Five Star), where she had a nice apartment in the assisted living section. All the staff there were wonderful, warm and super helpful and attentive. The exact opposite of what Hebrew Home offered. read more

The other reviews are exactly correct. The level of neglect from the medical and managing staff is horrendous. Please don't let yourself be fooled by the beautiful surroundings for your loved ones sake. It was my mom's first experience in a home and it was a huge disappointment. I am happy she is safely away. I don't know where they found the doctors on staff but a family member needs to question everything and if possible be there daily until you can move your parent away. What was supposed to be a better standard of living for my mom became quickly a nightmare and I regret choosing the Hebrew Home. Hopefully soon the state will throughly investigate and lower their rating significantly. read more

Although located in a very lovely area, as with every nursing home. family members need to exercise vigilance over the care of their loved ones and be ready to adamantly intercede on their behalf when required. Although this nursing home represents itself as being on a higher plain than others, which in some aspects may be factual, in fact the overall standard of care, food and level of activities leave much to be desired and have significant room for improvement. read more

It has taken me a while to write this review, as my mother has been put through a lot of needless and careless treatment at the hands of the incompetent, uncaring monsters of LONG TERM CARE they call PCA at this death trap of a home for the aged. She is now, in what my siblings and I consider, after much research, visits and word of mouth, to be at the best home for mom to continue her rehabilitation 'long term care". This review is about Long Term Care, short term, when she was first admitted, was great. Much of the what I am documenting is from our own observations as well as my mother's and her roommate, who always came to my mother's aid during the late or off hours, when the CPA or nurse on duty would not want to be bothered, with either feeding her, giving her water or changing her soiled diapers, even medications. We almost lost mom twice, due to the negligence of the staff doctor and cpas on duty. Mom called my sister in duress after no one would answer her calls, they would turn off the call bell ! If my sister had not insisted they admit my mother to the hospital she would not be here today. After being returned back to The Hebrew Home and suffering more neglect i.e. infections, rashes and losing so much weight and more complications due to more neglect, resulting in readmission to the hospital; at this point we were adamant that she would NOT be returning to The Hebrew Home. When we came to retrieve our mother's personal belongings, someone had stolen her large gold crucifix, needles to say the patients on the floor were either bedridden or in wheelchairs, so one can only assume the obvious. We were much too preoccupied with our mothers state and neglected to report the theft to police. If you must admit your loved one, you must keep a constant virtual, we were there every single day, from morning until night, to the point the staff either liked us for our perseverance, or more so,despised us for it. Needless to say we had to put one or two in her place for being disrespectful, so you can only imagine the treatment other patients suffered who did not have family present to fight for them on a regular basis. My mom stayed at Hebrew Home for four weeks after she broke her hip. The staff, physical therapists, social worker, rehab was excellent, top quality. I loved the sculptures in the garden. I loved the amazing views. I loved the art. They had an amazing model rail road with waterfalls. The fish tank was incredible. The care was superb. When my dad was alive he never had any rehab facilities even close to this quality. Most of dads rehab facilities were like homeless shelters. My only complaint about HH was the food. The food was ok but every night there was fish. I also wish they had more fruits and veggies. Overall this place has a country club feel. If I needed care, I would want to be at the Hebrew Home. read more

My Mom had 2 stays at the Hebrew Home for rehab. She, and we her family could not be more grateful for the quality of care and the dedicated staff, not to mention the incredible facility. The services they provide are so important and they treat what they do as a calling, not a job. We heartily give the place and the people our unqualified highest recommendation. read more

My Mother has some fractures and was transferred to Hebrew home for some times. she basically was able to take care of herself. It was just pain med and Farley was given to her on time. She is also diabetic and her med was given on time. She has two insurances Medicare and Medicaid. The first 20 days will completely will be covered by Medicare after 20 days Medicare will cover 80% and 20% will be write off (since Medicare will pay more than Medicaid ) Hebrew home social worker Lori Saffitz has no problem keeping the patient up to 20 (as long as Medicare is paying it in full). But forget about extending her stay even if the patient can't function at her home . Because they will lose 20 % of the money. I found out about this after they discharge my mother after 20 days even though she was not safe at home. They keep insisting (social worker and Physical Therapist) she will be fine walking steps up to the bedroom. The next day after her discharge, the home care nurse came to visit and told us she will not be safe going over the steps. Sham on them that all they think how much money they can make. My Father has been a resident of Hebrew Home for over three years and we are blessed to have him there. The staff is friendly, engaging and always seem to lend a helping hand. My Father is paralyzed on left side of body due to a stroke and he received excellent PT and OT before he plateaued. Since Dad is dependent and cannot eat, dress, bathroom or transfer by himself, the nurses and staff look in on him all the time. We have some private help to get his day started but for the most part he relies on the HH staff and we've been relieved by their professionalism. My father is cranky, emotional and difficult, but hey he is thriving there. The place is spotless and has a myriad of activities. He has made friends, plays poker for pennies, watches football and baseball with the men, paints and goes to mass. In fact he just did communion with Cardinal Dolan who performed and New Year's mass at HH. Prior to placing Dad into Hebrew Home, I looked at several other facilities and this one was by far the best. I would recommend it to anyone. If you seek piece of mind, then HH experience for a loved one is first rate. It bothers me when I read these negative reviews and question their validity. I mean, I've been visiting my father 1-2 days per week for the last three years and have seen nothing but excellence. Nursing homes are depressing in some ways, but I know HH is as good as it gets. read more

Just awful. My mother in law has been here for two years. Dr.'s orders are ignored. Patient to Staff ratio is insufficient. The food is awful. I wish there was some place better but for the money this is the best we could do. We all feel guilty about leaving here there. I wish I could take her home. read more
