A few months ago, I brought my beloved 18-year-old cat to Riverside Vet for cremation. Everyone was so kind then. I have since rescued a 9-year old female cat, and because Riverside staff were so caring, I took my newly adopted girl (who had been in three shelters in different states, to multiple vets, and had all of her teeth pulled within six weeks) to Riverside Vet for her first appointment today. Everyone--including people working at the front desk, vet assistants and technicians, and Dr. Ramos--was so kind, so professional, so efficient (no waiting for the appointment), so knowledgeable, and treated my very frightened cat with such great and gentle care. I have used Riverside for several of my rescue fosters, including getting an extremely feral cat treated and vaxed - not an easy task. The worst . Desensitized . My poor baby lost her life and they couldn't explain why. She went in just for vomiting and a few hours later I get the call she's gone. I called to come in for vaccinations. The person on the phone suggested Saturday at 1p, I thought because it was their suggestion it would be honored. After waiting an hour plus, I asked for an estimate and was reprimanded to even suggest that could be given. Once inside I reported my upset and, since no apology or face time with the doctor given, I asked that the consultation fee be waived - as it is offered to people who give good reviews. The answer was no, so I walked. Petco has always been encouraged. So petco it is. Follow up - just had my FANTASTIC appointment at Petco who asked me why I had gotten all the "specialty vaccinations" since we do not go to the country and she is not boarded. Riverside has been overcharging without my knowledge. This has been the standard feedback but it still shocked me. How disappointing. Shame on them! read more

The administration of this office is deplorable. They proactively try to sell you services your pet does not need and then deny care if you don't pay up. This is after getting email confirmation, as well and phone confirmation, that you will be charged x amount for the desired service. In my pets case, we came in for the same grooming service we had done less than 6 months prior - getting ready for the summer heat. I confirmed via email and over the phone that we are an existing client and wanted the same service - we got confirmation from the receptionist both via email and over the phone that we didn't need to bring anything else in by way of vaccinations or any such thing and confirmed the price of the grooming session. We arrive for our appointment. We are signed in spoken to with three different admin, front office folks and a vet tech for about 45 minutes. We patiently wait, mind you my pet is 15 years young and already feeling the heat since they don't have functioning ac in the office. After nearly an hour of waiting, we are told we need a series of shots before my pet can get groomed. Again, this is the same service we got here before, and I had gotten confirmation and pricing for the visit ahead of time. I was not about to pay an extra $500 to get my cat groomed. Total incompetence on the part of the office staff. They really need to get their acts together and stop trying to upsell pet parents. read more

How do I begin? Well simple, AVOID this place! Been going to same vet for 9 years, came to this place for an emergency and out of necessity of convenience. Some of the staff is BEYOND rude. I wonder how can a person in the service industry be allowed such behavior to customers/clients? Well when the vet got on the phone I had my answer. He was worst! A miss understanding (instigated by the receptionist or a position I'm not aware of) my call went sideways in a hurry that should have never been the case. Very suspect the way they handled my little guy especially just a week ago when I went back to have his glands squeezed/cleaned or whatever the proper term is. They asked to come get my pets file and that was that. Perhaps they should go observe other vets in the city and they may soon realize that either change their way or shutdown. Please don't take your pets to this place and save yourself the headache of having to deal with their attitude alone. Do not take your animal here! I repeat, DO NOT take your animal here!! I should have heeded the many warnings, but since they were right around the corner, I gave them a try. My dog went in for a dental cleaning consult. After an exam that lasted about six seconds, they were ready to do the cleaning right then and there and didn't ask if he had food that day. This is highly irregular but since my dog hadn't eaten yet and was in a condition to undergo anesthesia I said yes. They then asked if I wanted him groomed and I thought it was a convenient service (and he needed it anyway) and said yes to that as well. First of all, the "groom" was just a shave down of his entire coat. Shaved as in he looked bald in some places and was completely unable regulate his temperature. I sincerely almost screamed when I saw him it was so bad. He's a Pom so shaving is forbidden and I told them not to cut into the undercoat. Then they told me they extracted nine teeth (nine whole teeth) after telling me they were only extracting four. They of course charged for the additional extractions, which was unexpected and annoying. I was livid and on the verge of exploding but managed to leave without making a scene. My dog's teeth looked clean and his bad breath was gone so I figured that was that and we'd never be going back. Six months later my dog started showing tarter again, despite brushing his teeth and giving him medicated dog chews. A dental vet confirmed today that Riverside's cleaning was a sham job and they either didn't clean very well below the gum line or more likely didn't clean below it at all. It was a complete waste of time and $1200 not to mention the stress and anxiety they caused me and my animal. Now, his teeth need cleaning again and he will also require costly gingivitis treatment that's going to set me back nearly $2000 at the minimum. All because this place saw fit to cheat me and my dog. After the way they treated us, everytime I walk by this place I feel anger take over my entire body. They are wholly inept, shady, and unprofessional. Including the rude and unhelpful office, that seems to be where all the folks who made D's in high school ended up. I'm looking into if what they did is something I can report to either state regulators and veterinary boards. An okay alternative is Inwood Animal Clinic. They have comparable prices and aren't too far away, but Northern Manhattan is in desperate need of a quality vet. read more

HORRIBLE!!! I originally had an appointment booked elsewhere for my cat to get treated for fleas. I went in despite seeing the bad reviews because I thought my cat had a fever so i wanted to get seen fast, this place said they'd take me in as a walk in. I go in, the nurses have me write down my cats info and she checks my cat. No fever but my cat does have fleas so they give me paperwork with pricing and the procedures needed to be done. The paper states my cat will be receiving two shots (didn't ask if she had them already or explain what they're for). I ask the nurse about the shots and he says to ask the doctor. The doctor comes in, asking ME how i know he has fleas, i look at him confused? Then i ask him about the shots on the paper, what are they for? & he literally waves angrily at me to leave and tells the nurse "forget it! She can leave". This place knows nothing about hospitality, very unprofessional and meanwhile i was waiting to be seen by the doctor, there was another young lady arguing as well because they wouldn't explain anything to her. read more

I took my large dog here for a GI problem and some coughing that was recently onset. The vet didn't bother to perform a basic exam (ie, quickly listening to his heart/lungs and checking teeth etc. which I was charged for). The tech held him down in an aggressive way for a terrified senior dog. The facility was crowded, treatment wasn't explained by the vet or his staff, I felt anxious and confused with the plan. I cried when I left because of the lack of clarity, my anxiety for my sick dog and the way I felt he was treated while being administered shots. one month later, we are in the vet emergency clinic who diagnosed my pup with chronic heart failure. If the vet had bothered to listen to his heart for 30 seconds we could have avoided a month of untreated heart disease. I don't expect vets to be able to diagnose without proper exams and lab work and I think it's unreasonable to expect them to - BUT HE DIDNT TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN TO MY DOGS HEART DURING A SICK DOG EXAM FOR A COUGHING SENIOR DOG (a symptom of CHF which occurs in up to 75% of senior dogs) Credit where it is due: dogs GI upset did clear up after a couple of days. So the treatment plan (that was not explained to me) did work for the crisis at hand. I was able to get an appointment within 48 hours which didn't seem possible in NYC. And they laid out the pricing before they performed any work so I wasn't stuck with an unexpected bill. I think this place would be fine for basic vaccinations and the vet seemed to really like cats. If your dog is sick or needs to manage a chronic illness, please take them elsewhere. read more

Do not come here!! I had numerous poor experiences taking my healthy dog here. Even if the place is slow, they rush you in and out just to give you a pricy medical bill. The front desk staff is also very unprofessional by playing around/arguing with each other when clients are just trying to come for their appointment. The vet will barely come into the room and then just send you on your way, so you aren't able to talk through any concerns. I had to get my dog dewormed because I noticed worms in his stool, just for the vet to tell me that there were no worms (even though you could very clearly see them). They will charge you the price of a full check-up just for coming in even if you just need an updated vaccine. The last straw for me was when I tried to schedule my last appointment for my dog to update a vaccine. I scheduled the appointment online and even received a call from their front desk to tell me the day/time I chose was confirmed. When I showed up for my appointment, the office was closed! There was no heads up that anything was changing and I never received a call/email to reschedule. Even after I followed up about this, they never reached back out. This vet practice is incredibly unprofessional and I would not recommend it to anyone. I am not a first time dog owner and have never dealt with a practice like this. If Yelp allowed to give negative ratings this place it would be in the deep negatives. I never in my life ever had to write a bad review on a place but this place seriously needs to be shut down! This place just wants to make money and will try to convince you there's something seriously wrong with your pet even though it may be something minor. I had brought my 5 month old puppy there last Monday (Only place close to me open on Labor Day) because he started to have diahrrea and one dark looking stool. TWhen the vet came to check on him, he barely examined him and just tapped his belly. He didn't ask me any detailed questions on what's been happening with him or how has he behaving, the only thing he asked was "When did it start and if any vomiting?". Didn't take the time or even care to ask questions about his health or if any other medical issues he's had in the past. I brought a stool sample and he quickly looks at it and says "He's bleeding from somewhere" 5 minutes later, vet tech comes back with two pieces of paper explaining my "options for treatment" which is basically a bill. One option is to run some tests and do blood work ( $250) and the second option was to do the blood work and tests along and start IV abx and hydration and "admit him for three days" which was totally unnecessary. I asked what would he have done the three days he's here and he says "observation, IV fluids and A antibiotic", the second option was $1200. He kept saying he may have Parovirus but that test result won't come back for another three days and I'm risking his life by waiting for for test results by not starting treatment. I told him, he hasn't been lethargic, his energy levels are good, not vomiting, good appetite, and that he's his playful self, def not acting like a sick puppy. But how would he know that if he doesn't care to ask. They then say he has a fever of 102, but I then see hat could be normal for a puppy. Again trying to find any reason to convince you hat your dog is seriously ill. I then told him since when do abx kills viruses since your so sold he needs "treatment" but he couldn't answer and just gave me attitude since I kept asking questions he didn't want to answer. The next day I called my dog's primary Vet who and I explain the entire store and mentioned the abx he wanted to prescribe. I find out he Clavamox was the incorrect abx to give since it doesn't give any coverage to gut bacterial infections but Flagyl is the standard of care treatment since your covering a wide range of different bacteria's. I asked him to fax me the results of all the blood work and he hangs up the phone on me. The moral of the story here, this place just want your money. They will make a big deal out of a potentially minor thing and convince you to get a bucket load of unnecessary tests. When you start asking important questions as to the rationale of doing it they get really upset and just want you to quickly make a decision. This is not safe care, just another business trying to make money, this is fraud on all levels. There are many other things that happen but this post has been long enough. I'll wait to report it to whatever NYC Vet board there is because this is beyond ridiculous this place legally is still open. RUN FAR FAR AWAY!! read more

I don't want to leave a poor rating because I was grateful to find a vaccination appt in only two days notice (needed to board kitty overnight somewhere). But!!! I am astonished at how quick and uninvolved the $65 "physical" was. It was honestly cheaper than other vet offices, but I'd hope ANY vet would minimally be interested in a kitten's (newly adopted after foster) overall health and development, regardless off price. My kitten was weighed, temperature, and oral check then rabies vaccine in all of about 5 minutes (and im sure im being nice probably more like 3). The vet did inform me that the kitten is probably younger than my adoption records stated based on his baby teeth... but thats it! No check of his ears, paws, skin. I actually said "good to know because one of my questions was about his baby teeth.." but he did not follow up to ask me at any point if I had questions. After the teeth, he quickly gave the rabies vaccination and was out the door. Honestly, now after reading reviews I'm wondering if he even administered anything. I will never come here again and will be taking my kitty to another vet moving forward! Oh! And unlike most vets where you pay for an initial REAL examination and then just per appt for whatever specific needs... here you pay $65 for any additional visit after 30 days, $35 within 2 week.. something like that. About fifteen days ago I found myself in the sad situation of putting my dog to sleep, the only place I found open on a Sunday where they let me be with her in the process, was this place. Having a deep pain for the decision I had to make, I regret having come to this place, first the process is not at all peaceful neither for the animal nor for the owner. When I entered the room the doctor already had half a liquid adminestired into our dog, there was no sedation, the vet could not wait for us to enter (without a single patient waiting) and say goodbye to our dog in love. I had a nurse (who looked like a robot without emotion) who held my dog as if she was a dog of 50 pounds when she was only 13 pounds and extremely weak. It is sad that a veterinarian is not aware of what a pet represents in a person's life, how the loss affects psychologically, emotionally and spiritually, how important it is for the pet to have its owner close at a time like that. It was HORRIBLE ! This marked me deeply, it could have been different. I cannot speak about his knowledge as a veterinarian, he seemed very clear and direct in his diagnosis, but the way in this painful process was absent of empathy, compassion, staff that looks like robots barely shows emotion. I looked at previous comments and you can see the lack of quality, when such a veteirinary is responding to comments in a egotistical and rude way, it shows lack of self-awareness and no sign of self-reflection. I will not question the doctors ability because he seemes to be knowledgeable, but the the way the process was done is questionable. Honestly if you are planning on taking the hard decision of euthanizing your dog, don't go to this place. read more

Believe the reviews. This place is garbage. When my Tyson--a perfectly healthy 12yo GSD had a sudden heart attack, they didn't even try to save him. They just took $500 and let him die, wasting valuable time badgering my partner about a deposit before they'd even BEGIN "treatment" (aka: oxygen). This place should be shut down immediately. I just thank GOD I arrived in time to at least hold him while he passed. My partner only took him there in the first place because Tyson was in such immediate need of care and they were the closest vet he could carry him to on foot since our regular vet (Dr. Kreiger) moved her practice to Harlem. If we had known then what we know now we would've taken an Uber to Dr. K or Blue Pearl in midtown. Both places have taken amazing care of my pets and I have no doubt that my beautiful boy would've had a much better chance at recovery or at least a more comfortable passing ANYWHERE else but here. There should be an option of zero stars! Have been taking my dog here for 8 years. Last month my dog began to poop blood, they ran exams and everything. I had to call to get a copy of the X-ray because they told me it was a bacteria. They never did a follow-up or called. After reading the X-ray there were three different suggestions in which NOT ONE WAS MADE. I had even called the doctor he said it's the food and to follow up next week. I had made an app to a different doctor, but my poor dog didn't make, she never woke up the day of her app. Do yourself, your pet, and your bank account a favor and don't ever bring your pet here. I'm not one to write a review after a negative experience but considering this is an establishment that deals with the well-being of our furry family member, it only seems right to warn people to steer clear of this place. I brought my puppy in for a routine visit and was at first delighted by the young lady attending to me, she was very nice and seemed to enjoy animals. However they tried to get me to pay a fee for not having an appointment even though I made an appointment and even got a call the day before to confirm I was still coming in. I wanted to make sure my pup was healthy and I got him most of the shots they recommended, I also paid for a wellness check that the vet did not perform. He gave him his shots and left and I was told I was good to go. He didn't examine my puppy AT ALL nor did he take any time to talk to me about his health. The cherry on top was 2 days later when checking my bank account, they had charged me TWICE for the visit. If you actually care about your pets well-bein, don't come here. You will get whatever shots they convince you your pet will need and will quickly rush you out. The only saving grace was the nice lady working in the front. read more

Took our cat in- first off they had us test her for feline HIV and leukemia, even though she wasn't even 2 months old, you're supposed to wait 6- made a pretty penny off us there. Neglected to diagnose her with ear mites which she had. Also, charged us for FOUR vaccinations, which, as it turns out when we went to another vet for the ear mites, THEY NEVER EVEN GAVE HER. The other vet had this shitstain of a clinic send over her records and there was no mention of any vaccines being administered. Charged us twice for deworming. Overall, the visit and meds we bought off them cost around $600, yet we recieved pretty much no services. She also had fleas they didnt check for. While we were there, there was a very angry customer yelling at them that theyre a scam. As it turns out he was absolutely correct. Please avoid this shitshow at all costs!!!!!!! read more

I wish I had read the reviews before I took my kitty in but never again will I take my baby there. I took my kitten in because one of her eyes were swollen and leaking discharge. When I got there I waited for almost 45 minutes before I was seen. The room was messy and had no place for me sit. The vet tech came in and didn't even ask why I was there but started trying to upsell me vaccinations for her. I had to ask him to forget about vaccinations and focus on why she was here... the swollen eye. He handled my kitten so roughly I was appalled. He was the one essentially diagnosing my kitty with an eye infection and brought in a paper with payment plans. I had to tell him I need the doctor to come in and examine her properly. Then enter Dr. Ramos who stayed all of one minute listened to her heartbeat and said yes eye infection, No explanation, no warmth, no real care nothing. Not even a proper actual physical exam. He seemed almost annoyed when I started asking questions about her diagnosis and left for the vet tech to finish doing his job. Icing on the cake is the other tech coming in to inform me they would be charging me $20 for a same day appointment fee! For what? The inconvenience of having to book an open slot on the same day. Ridiculous! They charged me $18 for a plastic econe that had a piece of gauge through it, that they probably bought for a couple cents. My poor kitty is so miserable I had to order a more comfortable one for less than half that price. I paid $328 in total for what I can't even tell you. This establishment is the quintessential example of the fact that some vets only exist to charge money and have no real concern for the care of your animals. If you care about you fur babies I'd recommend you go elsewhere. I've never been to a vet office before and left feeling so upset and disgusted, I literally cried on the way home. My 9 month old mini golden got neutered recently and was perfectly healed within 8 days-no issues. He went there for all his shots. I've been taking my dog here for his yearly shots for 10 years now. I've done my research, bordetella shots are only required for dogs who are at high risk for kennel cough. My dog does not come close to the requirements for high risk and probably doesn't need bordetella shots at all. If you're considering taking your pets there I advise to go somewhere else. We've brought our dog 5+ times for vaccination updates, check-ups, etc. Nothing pet-related is ever cheap in nyc so you do need to negotiate down to the minimum care needed for your pet (or you'll pay quite a bit for 'just in case' extras). I am giving this horrible place a 1 star rating so that there is a rating not because they don't deserve even half a star. I will begin by saying that like MANY other reviews. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. My mother who recently had knee replacement surgery was unable to take her very ill cat to get euthanized. This was her cat for many years and one that we all loved and cared for. Unfortunately she had kidney disease/failure and was very ill. My sister and I decided to take our cat to the vet for the procedure. When we walked in, we never saw the Doctor himself and NO ONE explained the process to us. An "assistant" simply came in and took our cat to another "surgery room". When I asked if I could go with her, I was told no, I wasn't "allowed". They would call me when it was time. That should have been my first red flag. When they came back to tell us that we could join her, our cat had already been sedated & a needle ready to go with the medication. We had no time to say good byes, and no time to be there before sedation. Again NO ONE told us what the process would be. As I reached for my phone to FaceTime my mom so she could see her cat of many years pass, the "Doctor" very rudely yelled at me and said "you have to hurry up I am going to lose the vein I am going to lose the vein". The way he spoke to me set my whole body into shock. How could he, how dare he in a moment like that yell and tell me to speed it up bc he was going to lose the vein? I then spoke firmly back and told him that he could wait 30 seconds while a phone rang. Dr Ramos, was COMPLETELY unprofessional, with zero bed side manner and ZERO compassion for the family. Not only was this hard on us all but he made it worst & to be honest, even the assistant apologized to us once he left the room for his behavior and manner. So obviously he behavior was very clear. He robbed us of our last peaceful moments with our cat. He acted like he was doing us a favor, when last I checked he was getting paid for a service. He should not be in the line of work he is in, and God knows what this cold hearted man does to animals when they are away from their families if THIS is how he treats humans. I also want to mention the state of his "surgery" room was in extreme poor conditions. It was dirty and it smelled and the door is half broken. This place felt like it was falling apart. They had bed sheets as curtains for the store front and a bird in a cage in the waiting area with so much feces, who knows when was the last time it was cleaned. No one should be breathing that in a waiting area. I had no idea this place was so bad and that he would be such a HORRIBLE vet. Had I known I would've NEVER gone here. BEWARE of this place. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF YOUR PETS THAT YOU LOVE HERE. Save yourself the stress and the anger. read more

After reading a few of these frantic reviews I was concerned about taking my senior dog here for the first time. My apt application requested my doggies health certificate, and since hes been due for his yearly shots I needed to find a place to treat near me, ASAP. Called many places, they all had limited appointments and nothing ASAP; nothing until i tried Riverside Vet Clinic. The receptionist answer the phones right away, was very helpful answering questions and my appointment was booked rapidly for the next day at noon. I was running late, called to let them know and there was no issue. Arrived with my noisy dog, was greeted warmly and professionally by the front desk staff. The wait time was prompt and loved the fact that they were bilingual (English/Spanish) There were two male veterinarian involved in my doggies visit, both very professional and attentive. My doggies treatment was done properly and satisfactorily. Would recommend for vaccinations, shots and exams! Thanks Guys, for your noble work! Blessings! read more

I don't know why they get so many bad reviews. Recent transplant to NYC here and they've done a great job caring for my cats. One was very sick, thought I was gonna lose her but she's happy and healthy again! Prices are standard from what I imagine. The upkeep is fine... this is NY I've come to learn. I will NEVER take my pup here again, and I would never recommend this clinic to anyone. I took my pup in for a check up after getting him since he had a mild ear scratching. The front desk people were extremely rude and barely acknowledged us. They were all in their own conversations. We get called to the back and I was explaining to the vet what was happening with my dog. He then asks me if i took my pup a bath, which i did because he was dirty from running outside with his previous owner. The vet proceeds to yell at me and particularly blame me for the ear infection. My mother had to step in and say something and then he calmed down and said maybe it was from before. Fast forward to when they come with the bill to my room, they tried to charge me $1,000+ for a simple "ear infection" and vaccines. They wanted to charge almost $500 for a test to test the bacteria in my pup's ear which they should ALREADY be doing if they want to help my pup get better. They prescribed him orally antibiotics and a cream to help my pup. This did not work and my pup is still scratching. Fast forward to today I bring him to another vet and it turns out my pup has had EAR MITES this entire time. If this vet would have done his job, we could have gotten my pup feeling better sooner. God forbid it would have worsened and something serious would have happened to my dog. This clinic should be ASHAMED of themselves. Do not go here. read more

I wouldn't recommend this place even if it was your last choice. My previous dog has fallen very ill and the veterinarian had no idea what was wrong with her until it was too late. I really didn't like how they kept her overnight there, alone in the cage in the dark with no one to come check on her from time to time (a lot can happen during their closing hours if your pet is kept in a backroom alone in a cage) - especially when they didn't know what she was ill with (and claimed they'll help her). When they finally told us they had no idea what was wrong with her, after days keeping her there in the cage - charging us thousands by the day, they recommended another place which was way better and it was an 24/7 animal hospital (Blue Pearl). Do not trust your pet in this place. Maybe for something quick and short but not when someone can be seriously wrong with your pet. Oh, and they also love to charge you with every little thing. So be prepared to be taking out loans when you enter this place for a terrible care with your best friend. read more

I never would have thought he'd want to be involved in any type of animal care business, given how little he cared for or even noticed our dog (now my dog). Avoid this place at all cost. This is not a vet clinic, it's a petstore. The minute that I walked in, the receptionist asked the brand of my kitten's food and convinced me to buy from here. While I was waiting for the vet, she tried to sell me insurance. Then the assistant who's very stinky and dirty didn't do anything besides selling unnecessary and expensive treatments. And the vet only touch my kiity three times and charges me for $64 for physical examination. And before I left, once again the receptionist tried to sell a nail clipper for $14. This place is terrible. I'm not recommending this clinic for anyone and I'll will not come back. read more
