Also, as we continued past the falls to finish the loop, there was a marker which we followed and basically had to crawl up the side of the mountain (which obviously wasn't the right way but it did have a path so we kept pushing forward). Thankfully it connected to the trail and we were back in business We enjoyed the beautiful, cool weather as we made our way through a mossy, lush forest. The water fountain at the start/end of path wasn't working which was a bummer but we had more water in the car. Pack accordingly.

First, the good stuff: admission is free, parking is free, and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. If you're driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, watch carefully for Milepost 316 and the signs for the Visitor Center and Campground. It's easy to miss if you're not paying attention. The weather on my visit was spectacular. It was nearly 20 degrees cooler than Charlotte, and after a few minutes in the mountains, I understood why people keep coming back. The forests are lush, the rhododendrons were blooming, the streams were crystal clear, and the overlooks provide beautiful views of the gorge and waterfalls. That said, if you have knee issues or mobility challenges like I do, know what you're getting into. I have a torn ACL, and while this isn't an extreme hike, I wouldn't call it easy either. The trails include uneven terrain, loose rocks, roots, stairs, narrow pathways, and some fairly steep inclines and descents. Going downhill was actually harder for me than climbing up. I was encouraged to see hikers of all ages out enjoying the trails. There were families with children, seniors, avid hikers with trekking poles, and plenty of casual visitors stopping at the overlooks. The atmosphere felt friendly and relaxed. Was it worth it? I'm still a little on the fence personally, mostly because my knee limited how much I could enjoy the trails. But I can absolutely appreciate why Linville Falls is one of the Blue Ridge Parkway's most popular stops. The views are beautiful, the facilities are convenient, and it's an easy way to experience some of North Carolina's mountain scenery without committing to an all-day hike. If you're reasonably mobile and enjoy nature, it's worth a stop. If you have bad knees, just bring realistic expectations and take your time. Life is too short to stay indoors. Get out there and explore. The mountains are waiting.

We were looking for a place to go hiking where we could see good fall colors. We found a guide that…read moresaid this would be the perfect elevation for the weekend we wanted to go. There isn't much parking, maybe 5-10 spots, but tons of cars park along the road. The last few miles to get there is a bumpy gravel road. I had read that it was a 1.5 mile round trip hike, but it ended up being around 2.3 miles. It was a pretty short hike to the summit, but it was a decent climb. It's not marked all that well. At the first split, take a left. There is a sign that points you back to the parking lot which you can use in reverse to figure out which way the summit must be. There's another split close to the top. We were told that both ways will take you to the summit with the left being shorter and steeper. The views at the summit are breathtaking. You can get a view from the left side, but the actual summit is to the right. You can get 360 degree views that are stunning. It was incredibly windy at the summit. The hike up wasn't because of the trees blocking it, but it felt like you might get blown off the summit. We were a little disappointed because the views were still almost completely green, but leaves changing is probably happening a lot later than normal this year because of the warm weather. You can also drive a couple of miles down the road and hike to the Table Rock summit. We decided to call it a day after Hawksbill, but might come back another time. If you're looking for a short hike with awesome views, I would highly recommend this one!

7/24/26 My husband…read moreand I like to take a cave trip every year for our anniversary. This year, we decided to travel from Ohio to the Bristol area. We saw that this cavern wasn't too far away as well and decided to see what a North Carolina cave had to offer. This was the 26th cave/cavern that we have visited in the US. We enjoyed our tour. Our favorite part was standing over the grate with the water down below! It was a unique experience and very cool. Our tour guide was great but we didn't quite catch her name at the beginning of our tour.

We really enjoyed bringing the kids to tour this cavern! It got flooded out by Helene but is back…read moreup and running, and it's a great spot to cool off on a hot day too! My favorite part of the tour was when they cut the lights off for a moment so you can experience total darkness! You couldn't even see the hand in front of your face! The…read moreBlue Ridge Parkway is a 470-mile-long roadway that meanders through the mountains and connects the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The parkway boasts about 170 official stops along the path. This site is one of these many stops. It is located at milepost 431 and may seem like a simple pull-off but as far as I am concerned it gives one of the most iconic views of the entire parkway. It is primarily a west-facing view with a 180-degree view. The best views, with possible clouds between many of the mountains, will probably show up in the morning or afternoon. The parking area fits about 20 cars and has a simple information sign that states the name (Cowee Mountain overlook) and elevation (5950 feet). The parking area looks out onto what is essentially an open field so the view is not obstructed by trees. It gives a view of numerous mountains behind each other receding off into the distance. If you want to get a good picture of the parkway mountains then this is probably one of your best chances to get it. Enjoy.
