We went ahead and went to our destination in Mankato and was hoping we could find a hotel we stopped at the Crestview and it looked like it had been closed up or abandoned. I went to the door and it was locked. There was one car in the parking lot and had junk piled out in front. After looking at it there's no way in the world. I would wanna stay there. The Victorian Inn is, I'm pleased to say, a cut above much of what you'll find out there -- not above "the competition," as this remains the only lodging option in Superior, but well above what you might expect in this part of the world. The facility has a delightfully split personality, with rooms for both those seeking the Victorian / nostalgia / kitsch vibe and those simply after a tidy, quiet, comfortable place to sleep, clean up, and catch the news. I'm the latter sort, and the "old building" -- a renovated motel-style facility -- is a nice bargain. There's a decent diner-style restaurant (also indie, the Velvet Rose) about a block up the way, and a Pizza Hut across the street. I do suggest that you bring your own toiletries if you're particular -- they're provided, but Cashmere Bouquet isn't all that -- but otherwise I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this friendly, unassuming facility.

Keep far away from Super 8 Belleville…read more Right off the bat, I noticed that the lower floor had smoking rooms mixed next to non-smoking rooms. The whole hallway wreaked of smoke. One room was missing a door handle. The red flags were hoisted before I even got to my room. Once inside the room, there was a very stale smell. Parts of the room were broken and cracked, including a light switch and an electrical outlet. The bathroom door scraped against the toilet when you opened it. The tub did not drain very well, so taking a shower resulted in standing in ankle-deep water. In the morning is when things became hellacious. I briefly left my room to start loading up my car, but my room keys were not working, so I could not get back into my room. No one was at the front desk and my phone was locked in my room. A couple came by who also needed the front desk, but no one showed up for an hour. Wyndham customer service wasn't open yet, so we couldn't even call them. This was at 7:30 AM, mind you, so you'd expect the desk to be covered. One other guest finally called the police. The front desk attendant showed up shortly after the police. She said she "overslept" and that the overnight clerk "must have left early." Just a horrible experience, all around.
