Able to use the computer with scanner and print availability. The staff seem to be willing to help.

On Thursdays, for example, it opens at 10 a.m. while other days it opens at 12 noon. You need to CALL before going to make sure they are OPEN since summer hours vary from day to day. It is a small library with a very helpful staff. The artwork up in the ceiling area of the library is very colorful and pretty to look at from time to time. If you need to SCAN a document to someone (send it in an email) you can use their Scanner for FREE. Yes, there is NO CHARGE to scan documents (if under 10 pages). Also, you make a copy on the scanner (if you need a hard copy) and this service is ALSO FREE. Note: YOU DO NOT NEED a library card to use the scanner or make a copy on the scanner. The bathrooms are very clean. It is a quiet library during the summer months. During the regular school year, this library becomes crowded with children from Oriole Park Elementary school which is located very close to the library. It not only gets crowded, but it is LOUD with children talking, laughing, etc. This is WHY I NEVER go to Oriole Park library during the school year. Movies, books and books with audio are available at this library (yes, you need a Chicago library card to check these items out of the library). The free parking lot is not huge, but I have never struggled to find a parking spot. The library is HIDDEN several feet behind Oriole Park elementary school. If you have never been to the Oriole Park library before, use your GPS because you will never see the library from Oketo Ave. One must drive down a side street in order to FIND this hidden library.

A+ storytime. I had some time off and wanted to get out with my baby girl so with my handy dandy…read moreCPL app I started looking up events for the day. I have an informal goal of visiting each Chicago Public Library branch (20 down, 61 to go) and since Dunning had story time (at 11, which is atypical for the CPL branches we've been to before) we headed over. This branch is a relatively new one, having opened in 2011 on land donated by the Chicago Board of Education. It's one of the smaller branches, with one large room and then a meeting room, but there is a fairly large park-like area next to the branch (not an official city of Chicago park, but it is a well-kept green space with paths and lots of benches). The story time was fantastic, truly. I'm not sure if there were two librarians or one plus a volunteer mom, because there was a woman who played a couple songs on her guitar. (My kiddo may want a ukulele for Christmas because she was super into the guitar.) The place was packed, too--about two dozen children, plus their adults. They need to get this branch a bigger room! There was a full 30 minutes of songs, stories, and games. All that was followed by another 30 minutes of playtime, where the librarians brought out different toys for the kids to play with. My little one is just starting to walk, so I think she enjoyed the extra space to wander and jump and crawl, kids to play with, and lots of toys she's never seen. The librarian(s?) were enthusiastic and friendly. The one who is definitely a librarian since she was running most of it introduced herself to us during the play time, which was really nice and made me feel super welcome. I haven't felt that way at all library story times, and I very much appreciated it. There's a dedicated parking lot, though it's not too big; maybe a dozen spaces or fewer. Luckily there seemed to be plenty of street parking and then some folks seemed to be from the neighborhood because they walked to the library. (Public transportation is probably nonexistent this far west--definitely for trains, but could be busses too.) I wish that some of the library branches had email lists you could join or something for their specific events, because with 81 branches it's easy to miss things. This is a branch I will be keeping my eye on and though unfortunately I'm not usually home on the days they host story time, I will look forward to bringing the wee one again for stories or another event.

I've lived all over the state of Illinois, and I've had library cards from all over, but my first library card was from the Chicago Public Library. So, now that I live back in the city, it is really nice to return back to my literacy roots. There is nothing like having a library card. It's an important passport to the past. Books are our only ability to travel back in time and connect the dots of the present day. So, thank goodness for one of the oldest infrastructures in American history to still be up and running... I'd like to visit this branch again sometime to give it another chance. We came here for story…read moretime... but it wasn't actually story time. We were indeed late by about 10 minutes, but when we went into their community room there were a bunch of kids/families doing some crafts or something, but no story taking place. I'm not sure there was a librarian in the room--if there was, I couldn't easily identify them and they didn't bring attention to themselves. We left because we didn't know what the craft or whatever was and there wasn't really space, and I'm not really sure when the story time is actually story time because this was called story time... I'm definitely not opposed to a craft activity, but if there are not stories and it's a craft event I just want to be prepared and be there extra early. The branch is one of the smaller of the branch libraries, though not unusually small--many of the branch libraries are about this size, especially those from around the same era (I think this one was built in the 1960's). It has a nice kids/children's section which takes up a significant portion of the library, and the children's section is located in a great spot since there's a huge, unobstructed window that provides tons of light. A cool piece of branch trivia is that it was named for Carl Roden, a CPL librarian who lived in Norwood Park and started his career at the library as a page in the 19th century! Interestingly given its location, parking at this library is almost nonexistent. There is a lot behind the library, which may have an accessible space since there's a ramp to the entrance from this lot, but there's only about five spaces and two were taken up by library/city vehicles. Your better bet is to use the free parking along Northwest Highway in front of the branch. It's also directly across from the Norwood Park Metra stop, so that's another option.
