3D printer - you can fill out a request on the Library website

There is a lot more going on than reading at the Park Ridge Library. Park Ridge is lucky to have such an interesting library filled with fun ways to learn. Admittedly, I am not a big reader and usually only come to the library to get books for the kids. Today I decided to look around and see what they have besides Peppa Pig books. There are tons of things to do here for children all the way up to senior citizens. Aside from the robust selection of books there are many other forms of media you can rent out. There is a large selection of video games, current DVDs and tools to help you pick up some new skills. For kids, there is a giant section with sitting areas, iPads, a 3D printer and more. The staff is all very helpful and patient with kids or adults who are new to the library. You can reserve the bulk of items online and just pick them up. This is a great place to hang out and pick up a little knowledge - even if you don't find books that exciting.

On Thursdays, for example, it opens at 10 a.m. while other days it opens at 12 noon. You need to CALL before going to make sure they are OPEN since summer hours vary from day to day. It is a small library with a very helpful staff. The artwork up in the ceiling area of the library is very colorful and pretty to look at from time to time. If you need to SCAN a document to someone (send it in an email) you can use their Scanner for FREE. Yes, there is NO CHARGE to scan documents (if under 10 pages). Also, you make a copy on the scanner (if you need a hard copy) and this service is ALSO FREE. Note: YOU DO NOT NEED a library card to use the scanner or make a copy on the scanner. The bathrooms are very clean. It is a quiet library during the summer months. During the regular school year, this library becomes crowded with children from Oriole Park Elementary school which is located very close to the library. It not only gets crowded, but it is LOUD with children talking, laughing, etc. This is WHY I NEVER go to Oriole Park library during the school year. Movies, books and books with audio are available at this library (yes, you need a Chicago library card to check these items out of the library). The free parking lot is not huge, but I have never struggled to find a parking spot. The library is HIDDEN several feet behind Oriole Park elementary school. If you have never been to the Oriole Park library before, use your GPS because you will never see the library from Oketo Ave. One must drive down a side street in order to FIND this hidden library.

I'd like to visit this branch again sometime to give it another chance. We came here for story…read moretime... but it wasn't actually story time. We were indeed late by about 10 minutes, but when we went into their community room there were a bunch of kids/families doing some crafts or something, but no story taking place. I'm not sure there was a librarian in the room--if there was, I couldn't easily identify them and they didn't bring attention to themselves. We left because we didn't know what the craft or whatever was and there wasn't really space, and I'm not really sure when the story time is actually story time because this was called story time... I'm definitely not opposed to a craft activity, but if there are not stories and it's a craft event I just want to be prepared and be there extra early. The branch is one of the smaller of the branch libraries, though not unusually small--many of the branch libraries are about this size, especially those from around the same era (I think this one was built in the 1960's). It has a nice kids/children's section which takes up a significant portion of the library, and the children's section is located in a great spot since there's a huge, unobstructed window that provides tons of light. A cool piece of branch trivia is that it was named for Carl Roden, a CPL librarian who lived in Norwood Park and started his career at the library as a page in the 19th century! Interestingly given its location, parking at this library is almost nonexistent. There is a lot behind the library, which may have an accessible space since there's a ramp to the entrance from this lot, but there's only about five spaces and two were taken up by library/city vehicles. Your better bet is to use the free parking along Northwest Highway in front of the branch. It's also directly across from the Norwood Park Metra stop, so that's another option.

This is definitely one of the smaller CPL branches. People here have been very nice and helpful. Im…read moreglad I'm able to reserve books I want online and pick them up here. One day I will take advantage of some of their programs.

Throughout the years I've lived in Chicago I've never lived terribly far away so I've been by lots of times, but have never had an occasion to stop in. However, the Northwest Chicago Historical Society hosted a program here a few weeks ago called Distilled in Chicago. There's a community room up on the second floor where it was held and it was a very good space for it. Also up on that floor is a very large study room up there as well, and some tables in the open space as well. There's some artwork here through Percent for Art, part of the City of Chicago Chicago Public Art Program. They're mostly various pastoral or landscape images. I think it's really cool to stroll slowly through the community room and view the 15 or so photos they have of early Edgebrook, showing the original school, the train station, and so on. Pretty cool. The branch has a dedicated parking lot but there's also street parking along Devon and, if necessary, the neighborhood streets. The entrance facing Devon does not have a button to automatically open the doors for some reason so if you need that you'll enter through the parking lot. On the west side of the library there's a little garden area with several park benches as well.

So happy to find it is still on their schedule! We've been a couple times now and will continue to go whenever we can. Most libraries have a story time in the morning, which is not something I can ever get to as a working parent. But family story time starts at 7, and I'm willing to let my kiddo go to bed a little later in order to attend this particular event. It's really well attended; there have been 5-8 kids there when we've gone. The librarians set it up with little rug tiles, individual ones for the kids to sit on. Most adorable of all the librarians have a variety of stuffed animals placed at each place for the kiddos to hug and play with during the story time. Great idea and great way to stick with the theme! This story time lasts around 30 minutes (though the first time we were there, Ms. Mary went 45-60 minutes) and includes stories and songs. I don't have a library card for this branch, so I haven't explored any of its books or other offerings. However, I believe that they offer passport appointments, which is a nice alternative to having to go to the post office to do it, though I'm not sure if they only do that for residents or not.

I've used the park district a few times and it's been…read morevery good; I've taken a class with my little one and will be starting another one in a couple weeks with the Wildwood Nature Center. The park district also has a preschool program, including a nature preschool, which has really piqued my interest. They did a leprechaun hunt that was kind of easter egg hunt but make it leprechauns, and I also signed up for their thing where residents can put out a leprechaun trap and a park district employee will come to leave fun stuff from the leprechaun. I signed up for the easter egg hunt at home that they have too, and that will be fun for my little one. The schools are excellent; one of the elementary schools has recently been deemed the 20th best elementary in the state. And there are some famous Park Ridgians (none who live here any longer, of course): Hillary Rodham Clinton and Harrison Ford are probably the two most famous. Park Ridge is bordered by three Chicago neighborhoods: Edison Park, Norwood Park, and O'Hare. The plane noise isn't too bad, given its location to the airport (which can be quite a convenience). There's ample access to public transportation as well; the CTA blue line can be found in Chicago just across the street from the border to Park Ridge. There's a large parking lot there for commuters. In addition, there's both a Dee Road station and a Park Ridge station on the Metra line (currently called the Union Pacific Northwest line, though Metra is planning to change the names). The Dee Road station has a lot of parking (I've never had a problem finding a spot, though it may have been different pre-Covid) and I think there's probably plenty of parking for the Park Ridge station as well. The farmers market is really great. I have been to several neighborhood markets in Chicago, and only the North Branch Market in Edgebrook is better. That's including the Green City Market, in my opinion. Last year they started a night market that took place once per month during summer and it was a lot of fun as well. There was a band and adult beverage vendors, as well as quite a few food vendors. Parking wasn't bad for either market. Overall, it's not a bad suburb nice that it's so close to Chicago.

If you are a resident then you will likely need to come here for a variety of reasons - to pay City bills in person, get vehicle stickers, dogs tags or bike tags. During elections this acts as a voting place. The lines are typically shorter than the local schools and there is ample parking by the attached police station. The City does a great job of decorating the building for holidays and really adds to the community feel. They also host a variety of summer concerts on the steps of City Hall.
