WOW! I called to get an estimate for blocking... and they gave me a price to block four tiny pieces 8" x 12" [I was told they charge by the "block squares" whatever that means] of $95.00 each!! Rittenhouse Needlepoint (confusingly located on 11th and Arch) is an incredible needlepoint shop, with a few flaws. I've always had great experience with the staff, particularly the thin dark-haired woman who works on Saturdays (Sofia?). She's very friendly and remembered the project I had picked out several weeks prior. She's also spent time helping me kit various canvases. I will say that I think their finishing department is somewhat overpriced compared to what is available online these days. Of course quality is worth paying for, but if they charge $200 to finish a belt and people elsewhere charge $80, that's a tough sell for me. Worth shopping around before you commit to getting items finished there! Their website is terrible- completely unusable by 2021 standards. They are -still- offering appointment-only shopping with very limited hours, and are not open on Sundays. This makes it very challenging for anyone with a job to patron their business. Finally, I think their canvas selection is subpar. They do not carry several popular and well-known needlepoint designers such as Alice and Blue and Bad B*tch Needlepoint. TLDR: large needlepoint Mecca with a friendly staff and extremely large fiber selection, but lackluster and relatively small canvas selection. Disappointing mail order experience. Was initially put off by the steep flat rate shipping cost, but according to the website, the threads I wanted were in stock so I placed a sizeable order that made the shipping cost palatable. Received my order and less than half of the threads I ordered shipped with a note saying (paraphrased) "Sorry, some items were out of stock. please try again in 3-4 week." The threads themselves are perfectly lovely, but considering items on site are listed as in stock (when I ordered and even now as I write this review), but actually aren't, I'll pass on ordering from this shop again. As I'm local, I may give in store shopping a chance when the pandemic is over. If so, will update my review at that point. read more

My first online order with them is my last. I ordered 17 skeins of needlepoint wool from them online on 8/2/23. Today, 8/15/23 I called them because I had not seen a shipping notice. Sade told me in confusing industry language (that I had her translate to layman's language) that my order had to be special ordered from the company (I was not informed of this - I might have shopped elsewhere had I known), had arrived, and could now be sent to me. I was not told my order was a special order. They did not let me know when my special order had arrived in-house. When I asked for an email with a tracking number when my order was shipped to me tomorrow, I was told that they don't use tracking numbers with USPS (although it is easy to do so); only with UPS. So I am still left waiting to see if it actually shows up - with no concrete information. If you're in Philly, I see that folks love this place. If you're ordering online for shipping, don't. read more

i personally dropped off items to be finished by their advertised deadline to receive by Christmas. today - one week before Christmas- I was told only 2 of the 5 items would be done and the others would not be done until 2 weeks after Christmas. the 3 items that are not going to be done are Christmas ornaments that were gifts! had they told me this weeks ago, I would have taken my business elsewhere. totally screwed me over and had the nerve to thank me for my patience! thanks for being a HUGE disappointment and ruining the holidays for me. This place is awesome! The store had a great atmosphere, complemented by the friendly and outgoing staff. The large windows let in lots of light and interesting views of the street below. There's also a big table tucked into the back corner where you can sit and take needlework lessons. They offer a free beginner's class every Saturday at 10am and paid lessons at other times. The store obviously caters to the needlepointer, with a wide selection of hand painted canvases, crewel wool, and the like, but they also had DMC floss, evenweave linen, aida, and charts for cross stitchers like me. The customer service here was really great. I wanted to take a look at the Needlework System 4 and they had both the lap stand and the floor stand models set up in the store to try them out. My non-needle-working parents were with me, and the women who helped us were very patient in answering their questions, even if some of them were kind of silly. They even gave me adorable 'crewel world' and 'crewel to be kind' pins for free when I admired them in the display case as my order was being rung up. The women also helped me pick out some Evertite bars to go along with my new frame. In addition to the new bars, they have gently-used Evertite- and generic-brand stretcher bar frames for a fraction of the original price -- $5 per bar for the Evertites and $1 per bar for the other stretcher bars. This place is great, and it's good that I don't live in Philly because I'd probably spend all my time and money here if I did. quality of merchandise is great but this company absolutely flunks on customer service. I spent an afternoon on the website browsing. I made a list of my planned purchases using their SKU numbers. The next day, I went to order and found that none of the SKU numbers on my three items would pull up so I could order. I'd say that is a BIG problem for the website. I then called to order over the phone and was told that they did not take phone orders (really?). I was told by whom ever I spoke to, that she would email me and I could place my order. I am in love. Although I am certainly a novice and self-taught needlepointer, (Needleist? Pointophile?) the staff was patient, knowledgeable, and never made me feel like I didn't know what I was doing, although I clearly don't. They heard me out on my crazy project idea, then helped me figure out a step by step plan to realizing it. They even pulled out all the colors of thread I would need. Bonus: the owner (Russel, I believe) seemed to be very kind and have a genuinely warm rapport with his staff, which is always a big plus. I am very very fidgety. To qualm my fidgeting tendencies, I needlepoint. I have been to needlepoint shops around the country (as a native Texan, grew up going to the French Knot in Ft. Worth and then a different shop in STL during college.) With considerable exposure to needlepoint shops, I must say that I was floored by the fantastic selection of designs and canvasses. If they don't have what you are looking for, you can also commission something to suit you! They also offer beginner classes and are very helpful with all of your selections from start to finish. They sold everything we needed to get started, and took me on a tour of options when I requested recommendations for "glittery" floss. I started coming here when I first began stitching, mostly because they were the only store within walking distance that offered a large stock of DMC and other floss to help me fill out my collection. This store has most everything you need in the way of floss and notions. Keep in mind I mostly cross stitch, and I find everything here that I need. I've taken one point off, however, because the mark-up is just too much for me to continue coming here. With tax, each skein of DMC thread is 92 cents (85 cents without). Ouch. Like really. Ouch. I have resorted to ordering my floss online because even with shipping it is less expensive. There ARE some options that are cheaper than ordering online, however, such as bobbins or needles. This is a nice place to go if you need to pick something up here or there. I've also taken a point off because of customer service. While the majority of my experiences at Needlepoint have been pleasant, these very pleasant experiences are mostly with the staff who are there. I happened to wander in on a day when their computer system was down. The owner was very upset--understandably so--but to the point where it got awkward and he was being rude to his staff in front of me. This was off-putting in a place where previously I loved the friendly atmosphere. I will continue frequenting Needlepoint, and will update this review should I feel the original luster of the store return. read more

I cross-stitch as a hobby (when I have the time, anyway) but inconvenient trips to craft stores has been holding me back. I finally stumbled upon Rittenhouse Needlepoint after doing a Google search and realized I walk by the store to and from work every day. Convenient! Being buzzed into shops makes me nervous but once I was inside the building I went right up the steps and into the shop. This store really caters to needlepoint fans. I like needlepoint but I was really just in for thread and cross-stitching fabric. The staff were all friendly as could be and made themselves available to help but didn't stalk me the whole time I was in the store. I walked out with a bunch of thread, some fabric, and some needles. Oh, and a bumper sticker that says 'Save Needlepoint: Kill a Knitter." Win. The needlepoint projects, and the rest of the items at the store, are a teensy bit on the expensive side. read more

I was "introduced" to this fabulous store after seeing a rug they offered shown on "Instagram". I just "had" to have this beautiful rug. I called the store and Russell, one of the owners, was able to acquire this gorgeous rug for me. He has helped me through the process of ordering yarn for the rug, and has stayed in touch with me. There is nothing he wouldn't do to help me with this project; always cheerful, assisting in any way he can, the best service I have ever encountered in a needlepoint shop, and I have been "at" this for a life time, and I am not a "spring chicken"! This shop is probably the most comprehensive shop of its kind in the US, so, if you have a needlepoint need of any kind, Rittenhouse is the place to go! read more

although this store is more geared towards needlepoint and I'm more of a cross-stitcher, they use a lot of the same materials and I found a lot here that I loved. they have an amazing selection of pretty much every type of embroidery floss, threads, and ribbon that you could ever want. the prices for some of the fancier things are a little steep, but I wouldn't say they're overpriced - it's just how it is. they also have some pre-made needlepoint designs - the kind where the design is drawn right on the canvas. like I said, I'm more of a cross stitcher and I like making my own patterns so I didn't look through all of them when I was in the store, but they're all kind of...grandma-esque. which I guess goes along with the needlepoint-store territory. I did get a really cool little book with old French-style letters and monograms that I've used a lot. the owners/employees are all really nice and helpful (although I got canvas instead of aida cloth, which was my mistake - I was still a little overwhelmed by how much STUFF was in the store...and I did have to wait a few minutes before being helped but that was because they were busy with other customers) and there was an adorable standard poodle up there both times I've gone. to get into the store, you have to ring a buzzer and enter through the building lobby. they also have monthly and weekly classes - I've been meaning to check them out with a friend, but, you know, life. and also a bit of hesitation knowing that I would probably be the youngest person there by a lot. ANYWAY, to finish this up - much better than going to Pearl. cross-stitch is awesome and I don't give a shit if that makes me a 60-year-old grandma. read more

If I could give this store 6 stars, I would. I started going here with two friends for the beginner needlepoint class. Stephen was our instructor and was extremely patient since we all needed a lot of assistance with our beginning stitches. Our group was so pleased with the instruction and our new found hobby that we went back for the more complex basket weave stitch class with Wendy. Wendy was helpful was able to answer all of our questions and provide advice on our first projects. I came in the store the other day to pick up a new project and was amazed at the level of customer service. The staff at Rittenhouse Needlepoint makes what could easily be a very intimidating hobby into a very enjoyable experience. Alexa and I were so excited to try the beginner needlepoint class that we've had it on our calendars for over a month. I am so glad we made it. Headed to the beginner class yesterday with two friends and what a WONDERFUL experience it was. Rittenhouse Needlepoint is the best shop around!! I used to use a shop half way across the country from where I live and had to give that up even though I loved some of the canvas' they carried. At Rittenhouse, they have it all, canvas', threads, finishing and classes!! Stephen and Russell are great and even bring their Poodle to work with them! (A big plus from me as I grew up with standard poodles!! :D ) This has become my go to store and I make a point of going there every time I visit my parents. The staff is so friendly and every time I want to have something designed, the design team is so easy to work with and will do just about anything your heart desires!! You enter this shop on the second floor of the building just located across from DiBrunos. They have coffee, tea , instructions and a place to sit and needlepoint. It sooo homey and the owners Russell and Stephen will quickly advise you on all the latest and greatest designs. Another key feature is that if you see something you like and would like to have the needlepoint done for you they have stitchers that will do the work. Its a 5 star rating in my book!! The work that was done in the finishing department is incomparable! I was all about to lose my hope when it came to finding someone who could do some finishing for me. I had been everywhere. The ladies in the finishing department worked with me to get my project finished. I didn't even have to go to the store. They kept me in the loop about the progress of the stitching, and now I have the project resting in my room. So pleased with their work. I was thrilled to step into Rittenhouse Needlepoint and browse the seemingly endless selection of threads and needlepoint tools. The atmosphere of the retail space is so inspiring and they've done a great job with their new space. I work in the same building as the store and had been meaning to stop in for a long time, but unfortunately I'm unable to give this establishment a 5 star review. I went in with my sister to pick out threads for a new project, and as we we're wrapping up and getting ready to check out, the woman who I assume was a manager or owner began to reprimand her employee right next to us. So aggressively and obnoxiously that you could cut the tension in the air with a knife, we were the only four people in the space. That same employee she was yelling at was very kind and helpful to us beforehand as we browsed. My sister and I were so second handedly embarrassed. We completed our transaction and got out of there as soon as possible. That scolding could have waited another 3 minutes until after we were gone. It was so unprofessional and I'm no longer excited to return. an otherwise wonderful experience was unnecessarily turned sour. I hope the management reconsiders the treatment of their employees especially in front of paying costumers because the space and the products are great. read more

I am so happy that there is a store like this in the city. It's really pretty and organized (opposed to a Jo Anne Fabrics type place) however I totally dread going in. The few times I've been in, the owner (?) has been pretty abrasive and insists on helping. I'm a do it myself kind of girl but have no issue asking for help if I need it, so having someone hovering totally stresses me out (I mean, I'm just buying some thread, jeesh).I would suggest doing some calming meditation before entering. read more

LOVE this place! I had a private lesson to get me started. The communication via email to set up my class was fast and painless. The lesson was great - I learned a lot in 30 mins! The teacher was able to explain things clearly and allow time for me to practice and ask questions.I got help picking my first project as well as picking the right kind of threads for my needlepoint project. Very beginner friendly! I finished my first project a month ago and now it's back to the store to be framed. I am 1/2 way through my second project. Went in for more classes and help. Every interaction I had with the staff and teachers there so far has been wonderful. Needlepoint projects are not cheap - but as you move along and learn more stitches, it's A LOT of fun!!
