Last minute (well, same day) needed a floral arrangement for my assistant's birthday, and was hoping to just pop in somewhere to pick something up on my way to work. I was calling places on my drive in that were along my route and remembered that I always pass Rita Flora on La Brea, so I gave them a ring to see if they could get something started. I had forgotten that they were under renovation, and were temporarily relocated to Hancock Park - definitely out of my way. When I got Rita on the phone, she reminded me of this, but immediately told me she could put something together and deliver it free of charge to my place of work in Hollywood before noon. Wow! I was impressed! I told her I wanted to stay in the $50 price range, gave her my name and cc# and told her I wanted the colors to be green, white and pink. Sure enough, the flowers were delivered even earlier than expected, around 10:30 (2 hour turnaround time) and they were AMAZING!! Tulips, hydrangeas and roses with green accents...just stunning! Yes, it's trendy and expensive and I haven't been there in years, but the flowers are nice and I HAD to give major props... You know how flower stores have signs outside to remind/convince people to buy flowers for the upcoming holiday (ie. "Son-flowers for the greatest dad" or "Happy Valentines Day! Here's the shit: They have a huge selection of -- what appears to be -- very happy, cut flowers and damn attractive potted ones too. And they don't wrap in plastic -- that's a good thing, right? I've never had a bad experience and the flowers always look great. That's a good thing too, right? There's even a few parking spaces right behind it, in the alley. Good again, I think. Sent a pair of flowers to my girlfriend on her birthday. Was promised a delivery time sometime in the morning. Showed up at 5 PM. Paid the extra $20 to add more flowers and the bouquet they sent was atrocious. Called the shop five times never one answer. I came in here because my fabulous roommate just suffered a not so easy break-up and I felt helpless to do anything other than pick up flowers. I decided to go with sunflowers - they make the right statement - the standard "you're fabulous and who cares about that loser who was too stupid to realize that" (which in this case was actually incredibly true) - anyhow I had a hard time finding a dozen unwilted sunflowers. And although the girl who worked here was nice she was not very helpful - she didn't really seem to know what she was doing and spent 30 minutes wrapping the flowers. No doubt that the floral arrangements by Rita's designers are spectacular! Over priced but you gotta expect it from the area they're in. I loved the vibe of this shop, but definitely gotta say that the owner kills it. She's got issues, seriously... for one thing, you don't yell at your employees and make most of them cry and you definitely don't yell at customers accusing one once for trying to "steal a flower" when they're just checking them out after spending a butt load of money eating at her restaurant. The staff at her shop are awesome and I give them props for putting up with that woman. She's definitely been through a lot of employees. Unfortunately for most of them that were employed for the kitchen, she totally did them wrong when she decided to close the restaurant. On a Saturday, she informed her kitchen manager to give out notice to the other employees that she was closing the kitchen. When he asked her when she was planning on closing up the kitchen, she said "TOMORROW". Omg, that was totally unfair to all those hard working people, being let go like that, most of them working for her for 10+ years!!!! The shady part is that she had planned to sell the kitchen months before she ever gave word to her employees about it. Only a handful were asked to stay to help clean out the kitchen, and she still had the nerve to ask them to make her breakfast... Un freaking believable. After the kitchen closed, a short while after, a noodle restaurant moved in and apparently only opens later in the day after her floral shop closes... :X Totally not the same vibe anymore. No brunch in the floral shop anymore... :( I honestly feel that this would have been a very successful business (and it was for a long time as i can remember her being open in the 80's) that could have kept blossoming if it wasn't for Rita's greed, selfishness and belittling others. I'll never forget last years Valentines day... Totally unorganized and a certain someone couldn't keep herself away from the bottles of wine leftover from the kitchen. So I was looking to send flowers to a girl in LA and thought that I would have to use 1800-Flowers or a similar service. After shopping around on those sites, I found them to be expensive and the shipping/delivery charges to be somewhat ridiculous. It struck me to turn to yelp and see if there were any local flower shops that might be close enough to consider doing free delivery, or at least delivery at a price cheaper than the megasites. I will NEVER give this shop a dime of my money. I went in 15 MINUTES before closing, and was greeted with "We're closing!". Utterly absurd. I finally got a chance to sit down and write a review of this place after my experience ordering flowers over the phone with them on Vday. I will say, I did last minute buying of flowers the day of in the afternoon, but after what I thought was a great phone conversation with a guy names Mike (I think, can't recall), the thing that upset me the most was the arrangement of what I paid for and the up-sale I got over the phone. Not only that, when asked what price range I had in mind, I told him $50-$80 and he immediately said, the person receiving them would appreciate you spending more (I laughed to myself and didn't even bother going into my disgust with his response). After all was said and done, I said $80 wold be fine. The arrangement was smaller than I expected and lacking in flowers. Not only that, the worst part was the charge on my debit card, it showed a total of $119 (almost $40 more than what we talked about on the phone) and after he made it clear on how much I wanted to spend. With all that said, the recipient appreciated the flowers and I never mentioned my ordeal with this florist, until now. I am all for supporting local business' but when the results are no where up to par for what you pay for, it really makes you re-think the "buy local" concept. I guess, I will know better next year before waiting till the last minute and before calling a random local spot to see if they can handle a simply request, from a simple guy who is simply trying to buy a nice arrangement of flowers for a loved one. read more

Simply cannot recommend Rita Flora (or Rita) highly enough. I like sending flowers. Whether to friends, a lover, or relatives, and not even for any particular occasion. Nothing brightens someone's doorstep as much, except perhaps a new pony. But seriously, this is the only place to order flowers if you're looking to send someone the "right stuff". Rita is the Grand Wizard of floral arrangements. I used her several times when living in L.A. and she is still my go-to florist when I need flowers sent in L.A. even though I'm now far away. Simply amazing. I heard rave reviews on the tastefulness, colorfulness, and freshness of every floral arrangement Rita has every sent on my behalf from the recipients. Perhaps as important, Rita really seems to take a personal interest in the occasion and purpose of what you are sending so as to individualize her arrangements appropriately.
