So why would anyone come to the Picos to stay in a crowded, larger hotel? Carlos has owned this property since 1991, and has been running it as a B&B for over 20 years now. He is a master carpenter; having taken a home that had been abandoned for more than 50 years - and converted it into a warm, inviting establishment. He managed to retain the rustic feel while finishing the place with modern touches, resulting in a VERY comfortable establishment with all of the old-world charm. It is simply beautiful! Each room or suite features a private bathroom (except the loft... a cozy nook for two or three). The views from each are simply stunning. Each room is heated (as needed) and has a TV. There is WiFi throughout. Carlos provides a wonderful breakfast each morning - featuring local meats and cheeses, breads and sweets, along with local honeys (four flavors based upon the elevation where the flowers were 'visited' by the bees); jams, oil, tomato, coffee, tea... and if you'd rather pack a lunch for your day's outing, he can fix you up as well. Carlos's knowledge of the area is almost encyclopaedic...from the local history, culture and lore, to the best places to eat or simply to relax and have a 'cuppa.' While we were there, he turned us on to the "roads less visited." So even though we were in the Picos at the height of their season, we did not suffer any overcrowding. The roads were narrow and mostly empty, allowing us to really enjoy the views. The restaurants that he suggested were each outstanding in their own right. He has a dear friend that is fluent in English, so don't let language hold you back. This is a place that will give you memories to cherish, and make you want to come back. There is a beautiful national park, Picos de Europa nearby, that many travel here to see. La Casa de Juansabeli is about a 15 minute drive to Los Picos. Anyway, we happened to check into the hotel in the evening and just wanted to get dinner and turn in early as we have a long day ahead the following day. We decided to eat at the hotel's own restaurant for convenience. Dinner service starts at 8:30pm and goes until 10:00pm. We didn't realize reservations needed to be made, but our server gladly accommodated us. The menu features either a 2 course (€16.50) or 3 course dinner (€22) that you can build based on a list of items on the menu. Dinner also includes complimentary water, a glass of wine and a basket of bread. For a small hotel restaurant located near the mountains, we really didn't think food was going to be good until we saw the other tables being served delicious, large portion sized plates of food. My husband had the 3 course dinner with anchovies on toasted bread, duck confit and the flower pot ice cream dessert, while I opted for the 2 course dinner with the fish entree and the flower pot ice cream dessert as well. Everything from the execution, presentation, taste was excellent. The flowerpot dessert was served in a flowerpot with chocolate and mint ice cream, topped with cocoa and chocolate dust with two little flowers on top. This is not your regular country food! I know I mentioned Juansabeli is a 15-room hotel, but it is owned by Logis, a leading hotel chain in Europe. The rooms are quaint and clean. The staff are super sweet and professional. When we checked out that morning, the hotel even gifted us a home made jam most likely made from local ingredients! It was such a sweet gesture and makes the guest feel special and valued. Sad we could only stay for one night, this place is truly a gem.

The hotel is around €76 a night and it's placed right at the edge of Cangas de Onís, a historically significant and beautiful town in Asturias. A little on the internals of the hotel. The hotel is beautiful and the rooms are perfect for a stay. They offer different size rooms, some with double beds and some with single beds. The bathrooms are a nice size too. They offer a small breakfast downstairs comprised of pastries, cereal, and coffee. Overall, the rooms are very clean and perfect for a short stay. However, the only critique I have is that this place has zero parking, I mean zero. Here's a tip, there's parking above the hotel either in the residential area or on the hillside. Whether you're enjoying a small getaway to this beautiful town or going to canoeing like we did (I suggest both), this hotel is perfect. Enjoy.

It is a historic building (a former Monastery) which is elegant, beautifully restored and modernized. It was our first night of the tour and it was an incredible introduction to Spain! The grounds were beautiful but then so was the surrounding area! We ate dinner at the hotel and the meal was wonderful. The only regret we had is that we arrived fairly late and had to leave early the next day to ride! If you do get the opportunity to stay here, take it! Just make sure you give yourself enough time to truly enjoy the experience!

Gayle and I returned to Fuente De almost 11 years after our last visit. During our May stay we…read moretook the nearby Teleferic up the mountain (in 4 minutes) and walked down to the Parador via a trail that took about 4 hours to complete. That included some winter-like weather on top, more ups than we expected, and light rain during most of the last half. About a third of the way down is the Hotel Áliva, of which Gayle and I stopped for coffee and a snack. Back in 2011, we decided not to take this trail as we arrived at Fuente De on a whim and weren't properly outfitted for a long hike. Coming back, we sort of expected a idyllic pastural walk, but that didn't quite turn out to be the case. Yet, we were happy we did it, really enjoyed the scenery, appreciated some map help by a French couple (who were really prepared), and felt really accomplished at the end. And we stayed 3 nights at the Parador de Fuente De. We drove in from Baiona (Atlantic Coast) on Day 1, took the Teleferic Hike on Day 2, and enjoyed a tour over mountain roads to the Cares Gorge on Day 3. And after that, we were off to San Sebastian. In between were a couple trips to Potes, an inspirational visit to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, and some local village and culinary exploration. The Parador? Marvelous! is huge mountain hotel, of which we had a really nice and comfortable room with a sitting room view (see picture). There are several spacious common areas, a inviting bar, and a nice restaurant. We weren't the only ones here, as the hotel seemed popular with the British motorcycle touring group. These folks were having a great time, and all we needed to do was hang out in the bar or linger in the breakfast room (which had a nice spread). The stunning outdoor and regional culture options here seemed endless and of we course just scratched the surface. I just hope we don't have to wait 11 years to come back again.

Our big regret was not completing the 4+ hour hike down, but in fairness we hadn't packed enough water, snacks, and layers. If we ever come back, we'll stay at the Parador and this area a little more justice. It was now 3 PM and in Spain that means that it was Lunch time. We were now in Potes and one Tour book (Northern Spain Handbook by Footprint) recommended Casa Cayo. It was a fine choice. We were seated by the window and the views of the river and the nearby peaks were very pretty. The place very lively, cheerful, sunny, and a great place to hang out and soak up the local ambiance. We also had a great server who took very good care of us. We both enjoyed one of the local stews and shared over a bottle of nice wine. Flan and coffee (solo for me, con leche for Gayle) finished off a nice meal and a fun hiking portion of our day.

Our room was very clean and comfortable. We had three windows and the view was of the city and streets. Because it is just off the main road through the city it was a little noisy until it got late and than again started around 6 in the morning. This did not seem to bother me or my wife as we slept well. There is a lot to see in the area. We spent a lot of time just walking around. Everyone in town was inviting and very helpful. The hotel had a restaurant but it seemed we always ate at one of the local places. Great place for a wedding.

When we open the window the beach in not in front it is below. The hotel actually juts out over the beach from a cliff along side the road. Awesome. Having said that, if this hotel were in any other location it would be a 3 star. While clean, it is sterile without much in the way of character. The folks running this place are friendly and accommodating and we couldn't argue about the price (60 euros/night). But it is the view that sells this place. The restaurant is on the high side for food prices so we did not dine there. But it does look like they do a good lunch business. We didn't see anyone in the dining room for dinner. For the price we couldn't beat it. We will come back.
