I walked here all the way from the hotel I was staying at - Hotel Clayton. The walk was quite nice, the park is located near some quaint neighborhoods. There are several entrances to the park so it isn't hard to miss. The park goes across streets so you have to cross certain parts of the park in order to fully see the WHOLE PARK. They have a bunch of flower beds that are really pretty as you walk thru the park. There is a little pond area where swans populate - I saw a couple people feeding them but I now know that isn't the best thing. So just FYI; it doesn't help them if you feed them. Even during a weekday - the park had a lot more people than I thought it would. And it was a gloomy day too - but let's face it - it's Ireland, it's gloomy sometime during the day everyday. lol. All in all - a great park!

I don't mind it myself either though I reckon that it is aimed at slightly older kids. Never the less there is enough for the toddler to keep him going including a sprung see-saw (which will even hold me) a couple of small slides and a reasonable harmless climbing frame (still needs supervision though!). For me the big plus is the fact that the ground is covered with a mix of chippings and very soft tar/sponge/rubber stuff (to use the technical term. he couldn't hurt himself if he tried... well, he could, but he'd have to try really really hard.

It also has a playground and sculpture trail. The Merrion Square Park is the most intact Georgian Square located in the heart of the city and it's surrounded by all kinds of artistic and creative institutions like the National Art Gallery of Ireland, the Archaeological and Natural History sections of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, Royal Society of Antiquaries, the Irish Architectural Archive, just to name a few In the middle of the Georgian buildings, Merrion Square Park is located. The park is surrounded on three sides by Georgian redbrick houses. On the fourth side, it's surrounded by government buildings, the Natural History Museum, Leinster House and the National Gallery of Ireland. To me the best place to enter the park is at the northwest corner near #2 where you will come upon, what in my opinion, is one of the greatest examples of a modern sculptural portrait to be found anywhere. Here is Oscar Wilde in all his dandified glory. Fun fact, the Merrion Square Park was originally a private garden for residents of the square. Luckily, now everybody can enjoy a walk through the gorgeous park.

Like any good city park, it manages to feel sufficiently open and enclosed all at once.

Deeper, the park opens up a good bit and is overlooked by apartment blocks. So the secret is spoiled. But in return you get a lake sporting swans, ducks, and surprisingly large fish. I'll call it a fair trade. If you can catch a few moments of sunshine, this is a reasonably nice spot to grab some lunch. There are benches set around the water, but people tend to prefer the grass embankments that rise away from the pond. From up high it feels like you are in a stadium where people have gathered to watch to geese settle their differences. So, that's fun.

Now, being nearly 40 and increasingly removed from popular culture I miss the odd fact, like this weekend Marley Park was playing host to 30,000 music fans, which makes things like a picnic on the main stage a bit of a challenge. "What's that?" my wife asked as I drove on, wondering where the hell to go and 'I wonder if the people in that house would mind if we just set up camp on their front lawn?' It would probably be fine (picture worried looking people peeping out the sitting room curtains as the family Q picnic on their lawn)... till we start nipping behind the shrubbery for a pee... "What?" I reply and then see the sign for the Padraig Pearse Museum & St Enda's Park... I had never heard of it but having nowhere better in mind we decide to give it a bash. It's days like this where I should have done the lotto - we struck lucky with a spectacular park and grounds, full Brambles café (for those without picnic) and the weather to match. There is also an old castle ruin (a folly I'm pretty sure) which kept junior amused for ages. Well worth a visit, we didn't go into the museum, will save that for a more inclement day.

We had a nice little adventure. Would love to stop into the Pearse Museum but my two year old's attention span and noise levels wouldn't allow for a museum visit at the moment, another day perhaps! Not sure it's the most dog-friendly of places, spotted a very strict sign about dogs!! I could be wrong though. Regardless it's very peaceful and lovely spot for a picnic.

This park is a favourite of both old and young, because of its unspoiled beauty and wide open spaces. Many joggers use this park, and there is a cycle track running throughout.
