    Interior New York Central Boxcar

I highly recommend Riley's Railhouse for everyone looking for a comfortable and enjoyable getaway. The owners have taken care of everything to make sure that you have the best stay. The location in downtown Chesterton is perfect. It's within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and 2 wineries. We stayed in the New York Central Railway Boxcar which sleeps 4 people. The bed and bedding were so comfortable! Even though there were trains passing by I slept like a baby! They've done an excellent job with soundproofing. Earplugs are also provided. Breakfast the next morning in the lounge was delicious! The food just kept coming. The hospitality shown made it difficult to pack up and leave. Can't speak enough about how much we love this place, looking forward to going back.

An outstanding find in Chesterton, Indiana. My wife and I visited Riley's Railhouse in July 2012. We we very impressed with the quality of the food offered at this B&B. The rooms are spacious and extremely clean. As well, the owners and staff are some of the nicest people you will meet anywhere. What is more is that the railroad theming is created with impeccable detail. Nearly every corner of the place is decked out with some form of theming. You will find a model railroad and all of the other accoutrements of railroads and the culture associated with them. What a great new establishment that offers guests an opportunity to escape chain hotels. Highest recommendation! I slept in the upper Berth, which has a fold out couch, adult bed that can fit 2, and a kids loft, that can fit 1.

Pricing was in line with hundreds of other rooms I have had at Hotels across America, Asia and Europe. The personal touch the owner, Jim added to the experience was amazing! Though not on my way to anyplace I am likely to go, I will definitely stay here again. As an FYI, I have over 2300 nights at Bonvoy properties and a few hundred spread across other hotel chains. However, Jim (the owner and host), was extremely gracious and welcoming. We went straight to our rooms after a brief "interview" with Jim. Necessary to determine our likes and dislikes for breakfast. Our rooms were beautiful. Impeccably kept. We learned Jim is responsible for laying the tile in the bathrooms. There aren't any televisions in the rooms on purpose. I'll be sure to pack a book next time I stay at a B&B. Our daughter was with us so it was nice to visit with her instead of being distracted by a television. Our first morning, we had breakfast with a few of the other guests. Jim prepared Scrambled Eggs served in a Roasted Bell Pepper, with Asparagus, Garlic Grits (AMAZING), salad and fruit. Prior to receiving our main breakfast course, we were served warm, cinnamon bananas and also a chocolate croissant. The next morning, we had a private breakfast. We were served Poached Pears, a Carrot Cake muffin, followed by Quiche, Potatoes, Sausage, & fruit. Both days, Jim catered to my daughter's dislike of eggs making her French Toast with Cinnamon Apples the first day and Oatmeal with Cinnamon Apples (our suggestion) the second day. The entire Inn is very inviting. Jim sat with us at breakfast our second and last morning and shared his story with us. Highly recommend the Valparaiso Inn. So glad we were booked here.

The breakfast was pretty good, and I loved having the windows opened with a breeze. We would've been sharing a bathroom with another room if the room had been booked, so that's something to consider. But we had the whole place to ourselves since we booked on a Sunday night. I loved the location! So close to whatever you may need, but it feels like it's in the middle of nowhere. They also have a cute pup. Loved it! Last comment that I'll add--I saw someone review that this place smells like cigarette smoke. It didn't at all. I'm actually highly sensitive to cigarette smoke, often having allergic reactions. I didn't react at all!

However, we stayed in the Cambridge Cottage during the cold month of January. There isn't a furnace, only a wall unit space heater. (And there was a window air conditioner.) The ceiling had leaks, the walls were dripping and the windows were rotting. Lots of TLC needed in there! We chose the Cottage for privacy, but definitely should have stayed in the main house. We contacted the phone number given to us about the heat issue, but our voice mail was never returned...still to this day. Thank goodness that there were extra blankets in the drawer, because we used 3 down blankets that evening to stay warm. Could not use the shower, since it was so cold in the Cottage. The bedroom was in the upstairs loft, there was a kitchenette with a microwave and small refrigerator. Regular bathtub with shower. No fireplace. The entryway blinds were broken, they would not slide shut. Stay in the Main House, if you don't mind sharing a bathroom!

I am a very big supporter…read moreof businesses having the freedom to post whatever they like inside their establishments, but on the same token I'm a big supporter of private citizens choosing to use another business because of said postings. I also support businesses requiring it's patrons to wear a mask on the property if they deem it necessary. What I do not support is offensive, divisive signage to get the point across. A simple "mark required" sign or something with clever humor is sufficient--not the rude, tacky sign that was posted at this hotel that clearly singled out folk of a certain demographic. In a world so full of hate and unkindness, this sign only adds to be negativity. As a tired, road weary traveler seeking nothing more than a little rest and respite from the road, this "greeting sign" caused me to promptly turn around, walk out the door and head to the Best Western across the street. I recommend you do the same and do not support a business that is so crass and low class.

There is a restaurant blocking the hotel from the road that looks like it's been closed for years. After pass that you see the hotel. The grounds immediately surrounding the building and the building itself looked fairly well maintained. On top of the entry there is a dish either being held in place by cinder block or being stabilized with them. The interior is super dated and really could use modernisation. We checked in and were told there was a 10$ pet fee. 10$ is low and I had no issues paying it but there was no mention of it on the hotel web page. I would have paid it at booking. No place on the web site during booking is there a place to say you are bringing a pet. Floor in the lobby was nice and clean and shiny. We went up to our room. The room was nice and spacious and also needed a good update and carpets need a super deep cleaned. NOTE TO HOTEL: stop using the dated bedspreads. A nice crisp clean white sheet is all that is needed. Bedspreads always get taken off and thrown aside. Room smelled clean and our sheets were clean and white. The blanket needs retired. It had holes in it. All night long people came and went thru the stairway door that is in need of a soft close spring. We skipped breakfast and went to McDonald's. Over all it worked for a place to sleep and shower that allowed the dog but not our normal standard of hotel.
