Gong Gong Makan Place. It literally means Grandfather's eating place…read more The restaurant is at the back renaissance arcade, right opposite the dumpling place. The restaurant is pretty big. A look at the menu shows the common dishes of Malaysian cuisine. Tonight, I ordered a combination laksa, a combination hor fun, Lor Bak(Five spiced fried pork with corn starch) , Milo dinosaur(cold milo with extra milo powder on top) and Black and White(Also called 'Cham' in Nanyang cafe... a mixed of glass jelly and soy bean milk). One taste of the hor fun, and you can tell it has similar taste to Nanyang cafe's version. However, I felt that this restaurant's dishes are a bit more saltier. The laksa soup is thick curry laksa, which I like how my laksa to taste. However, I do find that the bean curd that they uses definitely are not the freshest around. I also find that the Milo dinosaur that they sell isn't the drink they are advertised as. The milo dino doesn't have milo powder on top of the drink!!! It's a SIN! okok, not that serious. Still, the place provided an alternative choice for malaysian cuisine lovers.

Today I thought I'd try the BBQ roast Duck (I have trouble resisting some good duck) and it was OK. I tried it with dried noodles rather than rice. It came out to the table almost instantly as the place was not busy. It came out to the table looking very nice. but when I started to eat it I was disappointed. The Bok Choy served under the duck was cold and the noodles were sticking together. The duck itself though was tasty and very typical of the Asian style BBQ Roast, yummy crispy skin and juicy flesh... I'll give this place another go in the future.

The food is amazing. I have had almost every dish on the menu and I have never been disappointed. Once I even accidentally ordered a giant plate of seasoned bean sprouts and it was delicious! However, I have some recommendations that you must try. Their curry puffs, I have never in my entire life consumed such amazing curry puff. The pastry is perfect; the stuffing is delicious and just spicy enough. The spring rolls are also a must. For mains, you have to try the satay tofu. Now I am a picky tofu eater, I have tried tofu from almost every Asian restaurant in Adelaide. This tofu is good. It is cooked to perfection, the sauce is peanuty, slightly spicy and delicious to soak up with a pile of steamed rice. The service is great, the owner always greets us when we go in and makes sure we are being looked after well. It is also exciting that when you pay for your meal you are rewarded with a fortune cookie! Madame Wu's can get extremely busy so I would definitely recommend booking for groups.

I did have the privilege of eating here once, however, and I was extremely pleased with both the meal and the service. The laksa noodles are freakin' awesome. Laksa noodle soup isn't exactly as difficult as making souffle, but Madame Wu's interpretation of this classic Malaysian dish is miles ahead of some of the others I've tried in and around town. It's a little pricier, but your taste buds will thank you for it. The customer service is also great, but because of the constant barrage of customers, you might feel a little ignored every once in a while. But never fear, they'll tend to you eventually with friendliness. Don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table if you don't have a reservation, this place is always filled to the brim. I've come by many times hoping to be seated, but was told to wait up to half an hour My advice - book in advance!

But, when you find a Thai Restaurant that creates modern versions of Thai and fusion food, you have a winner. Would you believe that this place is open from 7am to 9:30pm (Mon-Sat). They will cater for you from Breakfast to Dinner. The chef gets the restaurant in the wee hours of the morning to make in-house pastries (from scratch) and prep for the day. Did you hear that? Pastries from scratch in a Thai Resturant! Now, if that doesn't grab your attention, well... you obviously do not love food as much as me. You got to love the enthusiasm in this restaurant. You will be given full table service and the staff are so excited to explain why each dish is special. We had to order the Chicken Wings (Thanks Ngan Q. for the fab mouthwatering photos). And yeah baby, they were so good. Five a serve is clearly not enough, I want twenty! The scallops were really fresh with some beautiful minced lemongrass ontop. Very pretty and tasty looking morsels. Another thank you goes out to Ian L. for the recommendation of the Hide'n'Seek Chicken skewers. They were bang on BBQ Chicken with a soy based dressing. Lovely flavour and will be another crowd pleaser. Order then Finally the Som Tum platter is fresh and great for sharing. The idea is to grab the ingredients and create a wrap with the lettuce provided. There are little sausages, beautiful papaya salad, noodles, cabbage, fresh herbs and some steamed veg. Lovely dish and great for the health conscious. I am sincerely excited to try a breakfast here. The menu looks great!

At first, I thought the name was rather peculiar for a Thai eatery, but not so much for a bar. When it was explained to be by one of the partners, Apple, I can see where they are going with it. The name is derived from its 'hidden' location, thus implying the fun of having to seek it out, once found, punters will find the food both rewarding and unique. The vibrant space is cheerful and contemporary due to the bright décor and ornaments. Multi-coloured commercial pendants hang from the ceilings adding to its vibrancy. The bright orange and very long couch takes pride of place along the wall where most of the downstairs seating takes place. The high ceilings provide a greater sense of space, also giving it a very airy feel. Acoustics is not an issue on this particular evening even with an almost full house, excluding the use of upstairs space. It would be interesting to see how it holds up with a full house. Perusal of the menu saw us appreciating the different items being offered such as Som Tum platters, grilled scallops with lemongrass butter, far removed from the typical offerings that seem to dominate most Thai restaurants and cafes. Recommendation was made and we ended up ordering a feast. Som-Tum was ordered, so was the scallops. We also added chicken satays, chicken wings, Tom Yum Prawns soup, cabbage rolls and fish skewers. It was the perfect assortment to get a real feel for the type of cuisine they were trying to bring to Radelaide. We learnt that the dinner menu was created to reflect the different dishes from the different towns and cities of Thailand they the partners originated from. While the ex Sous chef of Madame Hanoi's creativity allow her to put a contemporary spin on the breakfast and lunch menu. Three unique menus were borne, with a weekly specials board. Every single dish we had was delightfully Moorish, especially the chicken wings. I could easily have devoured a bucket of those. It was a perfect combination of sticky, crunchy and fresh flavours. The grilled scallops with lemongrass butter were also divine. Tom yum soup made sense for cold wintery nights so, was very welcoming indeed. Not a massive fan of the cabbage rolls, as I found it rather beige, however the sauce was awesome though and made up the slack. Chicken satays are served with small triangles of toast and a cucumber relish. We both thought that was interesting, but it appears that is how it is eaten in Thailand. Our evening was most enjoyable. We had great food, great attentive service and very informative staff who were more than happy to enlighten us on how each dish came about. We rolled out of there with a big smile and a very happy tummy.

You can't miss it with all the sumo wrestlers on the front of the store. This takeaway store has a little bit of a twist though. They sell Banh Mi, Salad Bowls and yummy grilled meats. But, they also had Buffalo Wings on the menu! What? Buffalo wings in a Vietnamese store. Well... I just gotta try these. And they were pretty much what I expected. An Asian version of buffalo wings. The sauce was almost like a peanut sauce. The wings were crispy though, and had good flavour. But, I wasn't convinced with the sauce. Oh well... We wanted to be healthy (cough) and order a salad bowl to go with the wings. That was also ok. Great dressing and full of veggies! But the roast pork was slightly burnt on the crackling, which was disappointing. They must have popped it on a grill plate to crisp it up. Overall, it was ok. I am not going to run back. But, on this end of town there are not a huge amount of alternatives for Vietnamese. If you have a craving, give it a go.

Mekong Thai is pretty great - none of the syrupy, tasteless, oily stuff you might get at mediocre Thai restaurants. The frontage is quite distinctive - gated off by an curlicued iron gate. There is outdoor seating, a nice tiled pergola section with wooden seating and then the indoor area. The decor itself is a little old - nothing special. The service is very friendly and not too invasive. And if you're not eating socially, there is a great big pile of magazines - National Geographics and woman's mags. You can get takeaway here - it isn't super fast - but it is very cheap at lunch time. Eating in is just as good, but a little bit more expensive, especially at dinner. Some of my favourite dishes: tom yum soup (tangy and fresh), beef rendang, massamun (not too sweet, which I hate), and the chicken larb salad. If you're vegetarian, they offer an equally delicious and extensive vegetarian menu - I'd recommend the pad thai.

My friends set me a challenge, find somewhere near Hindley street - not too heavy on price and another friend had a craving for laksa. So then I thought, why not try Mekong Thai, it seem to tick all the right boxes? So after work, my colleagues and I journeyed into town and sat down to peruse the menu, it had your typical Malaysian/Thai dishes but I already knew what I wanted. My friend and I ordered the seafood laksa and my other friend had the pad thai. For a Wednesday night it was fairly busy, there were groups still in work gear, couples and tourists staying at nearby accommodation. You can choose to sit alfresco style in the outdoor area or sit inside and watch the chefs cook your meal through the open view screen. Just a note that if you choose to sit in the outdoor area, yes you can enjoy some people watching but beware the colourful characters down Hindley street might heckle a innocent restaurant patron! We weren't in any particular hurry but it did seem to take an awful long time before our meals arrived. One of my pet peeves is when meals do not come out together and you urge your friends to start their meal while you awkwardly watch them eat. My friend had half eaten her pad thai when our seafood laksa came out, it looked tasty enough but that was the only good thing to report. The taste just wasn't up to scratch. It was way too sweet, there was more beansprouts then noodles, the soup was thin and wait - where was my seafood? I fished around and only scooped out some chicken pieces. My companion returned her laksa back to add some seafood but I ate mine as I had already waited long enough and I was hungry. To be fair, the owner was very apologetic, he explained they had a new chef in training and throughout our dining experience and he was very attentive to our table. However the total service and food experience wasn't the best I've experienced but maybe that just wasn't a good night for them.
