Be cynical all you want. Say there's little or no point in the UK having a standalone ice cream parlour with the weather we have. It's not worth it, is it, you might as well stick with the little freezer they bring out in Thornton's and hammer it in the summer.
You pack of miserable gits! Who says one can't enjoy ice cream in the winter. I personally do. Sometimes you need a cool sweet treat if you've been shopping like a maniac. Sundae parlours are springing up more and more, there's one in Manchester's Arndale Centre called Scoop, there's been one in Bolton for years and years, but my favourite of all time is Rich's. They survive by expanding their repertoire - they don't just serve iced goodies, there are toasties and chips and sandwiches and all sorts of savoury bits and bobs and places to sit, so in effect it's a café. But you're here for the ice cream. You know you are.
Sundaes are great and all, but where Rich's really shines is a simple scoop or two in a tub or on a waffle cone. Mmmm, waffle cone. I defy anyone to eat ice cream on those daft bendy wafer cones, they're just begging to be chucked once you've actually had the ice cream part. Rich's excels in its variety of flavours. You've got your rum and raisin, which I've noticed is the only ice cream grandparents eat. This is true. You've got the classics like vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, mint choc chip, pistachio, all of which are top notch, then variations on them like neopolitan, strawberries and cream, chocolate fudge, blueberry, forest fruits, and then you get into the great beyond with honeycomb, hazelnut, liquorice, and sorbets too. Okay, there might not be anything as weird as Heston Blumenthal's creations but there's certainly enough to raise an eyebrow.
The quality is great. My father's always loved the pistachio, myself the honeycombs or fudges or mint choc chips or anything fruity (I'm a bit of an ice cream binge queen, one day I shall have twins and their names will be Ben and Jerry), my mother doesn't really do ice cream but even she loves Rich's wares and as a mopey teenager I STILL came here to brighten my adolescence with friends where, we'd, like totally pretend to hate it, y'know, and talk about like grunge music and what, yah, but on the inside we'd be kids in a candy shop choosing all our different toppings; fudge and fruit sauces, sprinkles, flakes, sticks, nuts... all for the win. Rich's truly exemplifies what it means to be beside the seaside and I urge you to keep it going by giving it custom. It's awesome. read more
